Abstract
Purpose
Theory of mind (ToM) is essential in understanding and predicting human behaviour. Parenting plays a significant role in the overall cognitive development of children. This study aims to understand the development of ToM among children in need of care and protection and then to compare the data with children living under parental care and children living in boarding schools. Further, it explores the extent of physical abuse experienced by children in the study and their relation to the development of ToM.
Design/methodology/approach
ToM Test developed by Muris et al. (1999) was used to measure ToM. Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Questionnaire was used to understand the children’s relationship with parents and experience of physical abuse. The study used an ex post facto design with a purposive sampling method.
Findings
Findings suggest a significant impact of parental care on the ToM among children. Also, the type of care received mediated the relationship between parental care and the development of ToM. Finally, children living in institutions run by the Child Welfare Department reported that they have received harsher physical punishment from their parents than the other two groups of children.
Research limitations/implications
Findings are a significant theoretical contribution to the ToM development in children, especially in the Indian context.
Social implications
Findings demand more legal and psychological support to vulnerable children living in institutions run by the Child Welfare Department and boarding schools.
Originality/value
The study explores care and abuse from the child’s perspective. Findings are of value to the existing child care system in India.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to understand whether entrepreneurial education imbibes entrepreneurial orientation (EO) among engineering students. The authors wanted to test whether students’ performance in the Technology Entrepreneurship Programme (TEP) influences the propensity of entrepreneurial firms to hire them.
Design/methodology/approach
Data was collected from 1,296 students who were enrolled with the two-year TEP during the academic year 2016–2018 using structured questionnaires. Multinomial and Ordinary Least Squares regressions were used to examine the hypotheses.
Findings
The findings of this study suggest that superior student performance in the programme is positively correlated with the students being hired by entrepreneurial firms.
Practical implications
This study identifies aspects of EO that relates with employability. The positive relationship found between student performance in the programme and chances of getting hired insists on the need to inculcate entrepreneurial values among students at the college level. The findings will also provide valuable insights for graduate entrepreneurs, policymakers, corporates and educators on multiple dimensions for customizing EO among students during their study at college level.
Originality/value
The authors used a live intervention titled TEP as empirical context to explore how training in entrepreneurial, design and management concepts influences EO. The authors also tracked the success of the programme through actual job offers made to the participants of the programme.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to understand the role of self-efficacy and family supportive organizational perceptions (FSOP) on organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) among engineering college teachers.
Design/methodology/approach
Teachers (n=183) from public and private engineering colleges in the southern part of India were selected using purposive sampling technique. Survey method was used to collect data using the following scales: new general self-efficacy scale, teacher OCB scale and FSOP scale. Hierarchical regression analyses was used to test the hypotheses.
Findings
Regression analyses showed general self-efficacy having a significant positive effect on all the sub-dimensions of teacher OCB and as well as on the overall OCB score. On the other hand, FSOP had a significant positive impact only on teachers’ OCB towards the institution. In terms of moderation effect, FSOP moderated the relationship between self-efficacy and teachers’ OCB towards the institution.
Research limitations/implications
One of the major limitations of this study is its relatively small and region-specific sample. The sample is also limited to engineering college teachers only.
Practical implications
The findings from the study reiterate the need to nurture a positive organizational culture towards work-life balance issues in academic institutions. The study also shows that FSOP can be a powerful motivating factor to encourage teachers to participate in institute-level activities.
Originality/value
Most of the earlier studies on teacher OCB are in the context of schools but the present study focuses on the role of internal attributes and organizational-level factors in teacher OCB.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper was to attempt to understand the effects of gender, masculinity-femininity and social support from three sources (supervisor, co-worker and family) on the quality of work life (QWL) of an employee. In addition, the paper tried to explore the moderating effects of gender and social support in the relationship between masculinity-femininity and QWL. Relevant background variables such as age, marital status, parental status and sector have been included as control variables in the study.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected from a sample of 307 bank employees in India (208 males and 99 females) working in private and public sector banks using the purposive sampling technique. Prior permission was obtained from the relevant authorities. To test the hypotheses, t-tests and hierarchical regression analyses were performed. In addition, the Baron and Kenny (1986) approach was used to test the moderating effects of gender and social support in the relationship between masculinity-femininity and QWL.
Findings
Masculinity-femininity was not found to be significant predictor of QWL, while gender emerged as a significant predictor of QWL. Also, gender moderated the relationship between masculinity-femininity and QWL. All three sources of social support significantly predicted QWL. Results of t-test showed that female employees experienced better QWL than male employees. Furthermore, supervisory category employees and parent employees reported significantly better QWL than non-supervisory and non-parent employees.
Practical implications
The key implication for organisations is that employees with both masculine and feminine tendencies are required to strike a balance between goal orientation and people orientation within the company. Also, employees should understand that their gender as well as their individual orientations towards masculinity or femininity will affect the dynamics of any interaction. Hence, being aware of the tendencies that are typical of their gender role orientations both while dealing with themselves as well as while dealing with customers, colleagues or supervisors would help in improving the quality of their work, as well as their QWL, especially in customer service professions.
Originality/value
This is one of the few studies that have tried to answer the “why” part of gender differences in QWL. In addition, this study contributes to an understanding of the relative importance of different sources of social support in improving an employee's QWL. Finally, this is the first study to understand the relationship between masculinity-femininity, social support, gender and QWL in the Indian context, where the overall cultural orientation towards gender roles is currently changing.
