Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze the key factors influencing the synchronization performance of distributed motion control system and to improve the synchronization performance for peripherals control of this system.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper deals with the software synchronization problems of distributed motion control system based on real-time Ethernet. First, combined with communication and control tasks, the key factors affecting synchronization performance of system are analyzed. Then, aiming at key factors and considering the synchronization of system bus, protocol conversion and task scheduling, a software synchronization method based on CANopen protocol and real-time Ethernet is proposed. Finally, the feasibility of this method is verified by establishing distributed motion control system and testing the synchronization performance of terminal control signals of slaves.

Findings

Based on this method, the results show that the synchronization accuracy for peripherals control of all slaves could be about 100 ns.

Practical implications

This research provides high-precision synchronization method, which could lay a foundation for the application of distributed motion control system in the field of assembly automation, such as multi-axis assembly robots control.

Originality/value

In distributed motion control system, many factors affect the synchronization performance. At present, there is no synchronization method that could comprehensively consider these factors. This paper not only analyzes the key factors influencing the synchronization performance of system but also proposes a synchronization method. Therefore, the method proposed in this paper has certain theoretical value and engineering significance.

Abstract

Purpose

Spoilage due to yeast and mould growth is a major issue for yoghurt quality and shelf‐life. There is a need to develop natural alternatives to chemical preservation. The purpose of this paper is to determine the effectiveness of mycocinogenic yeast Williopsis saturnus var. saturnus as a biocontrol agent against spoilage yeasts and moulds in plain yoghurt.

Design/methodology/approach

Yoghurts were prepared from reconstituted skim milk and were challenged with spoilage yeasts and moulds. The treatment contained the added mycocinogenic yeast and the control without. All yoghurts were incubated at 30C. Yeast and mould growth were determined by observing gas formation and mould colony occurrence at regular intervals.

Findings

W. saturnus var. saturnus inhibited growth of lactose‐fermenting and galactose‐fermenting yeasts (Candida kefir and Kluvyveromyces marxianus), and lactose non‐fermenting but galactose fermenting yeasts (strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces bayanus). The yeast also inhibited growth of dairy moulds including Byssochlamys, Eurotium and Penicillium.

Research limitations/implications

The inhibition of this mycocinogenic yeast against yeasts and moulds was dependent upon the concentration of the latter. Thus, hygiene and good manufacturing practice are essential in order to keep the contaminant load down and to ensure the effectiveness of the mycocinogenic yeast.

Originality/value

The use of mycocinogenic yeast to control spoilage yeasts and moulds in yoghurt is a novel approach with a potential to minimise yoghurt spoilage and extend the shelf‐life of yoghurt.

Abstract

Purpose

Environmental sustainability is quickly becoming one of the most critical issues in industry development. This study aims to conduct a systematic literature review through which the author can provide various research areas to work on for future researchers and provide insight into Industry 4.0 and environmental sustainability.

Design/methodology/approach

This study accomplishes this by performing a backward analysis using text mining on the Scopus database. Latent semantic analysis (LSA) was used to analyze the corpus of 4,364 articles published between 2013 and 2023. The authors generated ten clusters using keywords in the industrial revolution and environmental sustainability domain, highlighting ten research avenues for further exploration.

Findings

In this study, three research questions discuss the role of environmental sustainability with Industry 4.0. The author predicted ten clusters treated as recent trends on which more insight is required from future researchers. The authors provided year-wise analysis, top authors, top countries, top sources and network analysis related to the topic. Finally, the study provided industrialization’s effect on environmental sustainability and the future aspect of automation.

Research limitations/implications

The reliability of the current study may be compromised, notwithstanding the size of the sample used. Poor retrieval of the literature corpus can be attributed to the limitations imposed by the search words, synonyms, string construction and variety of search engines used, as well as to the accurate exclusion of results for which the search string is insufficient.

Originality/value

This research is the first-ever study in which a natural language processing technique is implemented to predict future research areas based on the keywords–document relationship.

Abstract

Numerical aspects of initial stability analysis of a cylindrical shell of non‐constant parameters along the generator and under non‐symmetrical loads are considered. A variational approach based on Sanders' and Donnell's non‐linear equations of thin, elastic shells is applied. The problem is decomposed to determine: the stability vectors in the axial direction in the first step, and the critical load and the stability vector in the circumferential direction in the second step. The discretization is based on finite Fourier representations and the finite difference method. To find the approximate stability vector in the axial direction an auxiliary problem for axisymmetric loads is solved. The error of the method is defined and the effectiveness of the method is estimated. The decomposition leads to small and fast algorithms suitable for personal computers. Shells with constant and stepped thicknesses under wind loads are calculated as examples. Tested algorithms show considerable effectiveness and good accuracy of results.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the prevalence of obesity/overweight using higher body mass index (BMI), assess racial/ethnic variance in overweight/obese prevalence, and to determine whether or not insurance status explains the variance.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional design was used to assess medical records of children in Nemours Healthcare System during 2011. The authors reviewed the records and extracted information on normal BMI, BMI percent, higher BMI, prevalence of overweight/obese and other variables as well as race and ethnicity. χ2 statistic, Fischer's exact and logistic regression model were used to examine the data.

Findings

Overall, the prevalence of higher BMI as overweight/obese was comparable to that of the US pediatric population, 33.4 percent. Compared to Caucasian/white, Asians were less likely to have higher BMI, prevalence odd ratio (POR)=0.79, 95 percent CI=0.70-0.90, but Blacks/African Americans (POR=1.22, 95 percent CI=1.18-1.27) and Some other Race were more likely to have higher BMI, POR=1.61, 95 percent CI=1.92-1.71. After controlling for insurance status, the racial disparities in higher BMI persisted; p<0.0001.

Research limitations/implications

Racial/ethnic disparities exist in childhood higher BMI, which were not removed after controlling for insurance coverage as a surrogate for socioeconomic status. These findings are indicative of assessing sex, religious, dietary patterns, physical activities level, environmental resources, social media resources; and geographic locale as confounders in race/ethnicity and higher BMI association.

Originality/value

Understanding the predisposing factors to obesity/overweight among diverse populations is essential in developing and implementing intervention programs in addressing this epidemic in our nation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe how emerging open standards are replacing traditional industrial networks. Current industrial Ethernet networks are not interoperable; thus, limiting the potential capabilities for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). There is no forthcoming new generation fieldbus standard to integrate into the IIoT and Industry 4.0 revolution. The open platform communications unified architecture (OPC UA) time-sensitive networking (TSN) is a potential vendor-independent successor technology for the factory network. The OPC UA is a data exchange standard for industrial communication, and TSN is an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers standard for Ethernet that supports real-time behaviour. The merging of these open standard solutions can facilitate cross-vendor interoperability for Industry 4.0 and IIoT products.

Design/methodology/approach

A brief review of the history of the fieldbus standards is presented, which highlights the shortcomings for current industrial systems in meeting converged traffic solutions. An experimental system for the OPC UA TSN is described to demonstrate an approach to developing a three-layer factory network system with an emphasis on the field layer.

Findings

From the multitude of existing industrial network schemes, there is a convergence pathway in solutions based on TSN Ethernet and OPC UA. At the field level, basic timing measurements in this paper show that the OPC UA TSN can meet the basic critical timing requirements for a fieldbus network.

Originality/value

This paper uniquely focuses on the specific fieldbus standards elements of industrial networks evolution and traces the developments from the early history to the current developing integration in IIoT context.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates how federated learning (FL) and human–robot collaboration (HRC) can be used to manage diverse industrial environments effectively. We aim to demonstrate how these technologies not only improve cooperation between humans and robots but also significantly enhance productivity and innovation within industrial settings. Our research proposes a new framework that integrates these advancements, paving the way for smarter and more efficient factories.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper looks into the difficulties of handling diverse industrial setups and explores how combining FL and HRC in the mark of Industry 5.0 paradigm could help. A literature review is conducted to explore the theoretical insights, methods and applications of these technologies that justify our proposal. Based on this, a conceptual framework is proposed that integrates these technologies to manage heterogeneous industrial environments.

Findings

The findings drawn from the literature review performed, demonstrate that personalized FL can empower robots to evolve into intelligent collaborators capable of seamlessly aligning their actions and responses with the intricacies of factory environments and the preferences of human workers. This enhanced adaptability results in more efficient, harmonious and context-sensitive collaborations, ultimately enhancing productivity and adaptability in industrial operations.

Originality/value

This research underscores the innovative potential of personalized FL in reshaping the HRC landscape for manage heterogeneous industrial environments, marking a transformative shift from traditional automation to intelligent collaboration. It lays the foundation for a future where human–robot interactions are not only more efficient but also more harmonious and contextually aware, offering significant value to the industrial sector.

This paper aims to offer an alternative explanation for asymmetric quality‐tier competition.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual framework based on quality‐price tradeoff is used in the study to derive research hypotheses and scanner panel data are used for empirical validation.

Findings

The paper finds that the concept of tradeoffs offers a simple explanation for asymmetric competition in favor of high quality brands; as the quality differential increases, asymmetry increases; as the price differential increases, the asymmetry decreases.

Practical implications

The framework and findings can inform pricing strategies for brands in different quality tiers.

Originality/value

The paper offers an alternative explanation for asymmetric competition.

Abstract

This chapter presents the outcome of a study that examined the phenomena ‘Is Tourism Regulation Catalyst for Abuja Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nigeria, Hotels Business Performance Innovation?’ Previous studies on this subject area have been largely done around tourism and its impact on hotel business performance and the relationship between tourism regulation and hotel business performance from mostly western perspectives. Hence, this study aims to investigate the direct effect of tourism regulations on hotel business performance in Nigeria. Quantitative survey questionnaires were used to collect data from 176 participants comprising general managers and departmental heads in 22 key Abuja FCT Nigerian hotels. Balanced Scorecard (BSC) developed by Norton and Kaplan was adopted as the study’s theoretical framework. Data collected were analysed using the simple linear regression technique and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) statistical analysis software tool.

The result of the analysis shows that tourism regulation has a significant and positive correlation with Abuja hotel business performances based on the BSC four dimensions of financial, customer, processes and learning and growth. The unique city characteristics of Abuja FCT were also identified as an issue for consideration in future tourism regulation innovation by the regulatory authorities. This study contributes to business performance measurement literature from the Abuja FCT hotels, Nigerian perspective, and sets an agenda for the Nigerian tourism regulators, the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) charged with diversifying the Nigerian economy revenue through tourism performance innovation. Also, a policy study into city characteristics classification as a way of innovating tourism regulations and hotels business performance is suggested.
