Abstract
Basil Bernstein’s theoretical ideas have been called upon by far fewer higher education researchers than would be expected. We argue that the international higher education field of research is ripe for further application of Bernstein’s theoretical ideas. Through reference to our own and that of others, we illustrate five key affordances of Bernstein’s theoretical framework. First, it provides a unique approach that leads researchers to pose formerly unthinkable questions and encourages the development of new knowledge to address them. Second, Bernstein’s valuable concepts raise questions about the specific but inter-related macro- (societal), meso- (organisational) and micro- (individual) level processes involved in producing (in)equalities. Bernsteinian analysis can help to identify how inequalities emerge from and can be addressed at these levels. Third, we contend that the approach encourages empirical exploration of the ways in which education may be disruptive of the social order. Fourth, we suggest Bernstein’s concepts can be adapted to capture the complexity of intersecting inequalities in a way that allows the object of analysis to determine what inequalities are foregrounded. Finally, we argue that concepts help to orientate questions around inequality and social justice in a way that does not over-determine answers.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to use the generalized model for thermoelastic wave under the dual phase lag (DPL) model to compute the increment of temperature, the components of displacement, the changes in volume fraction field and the stress components in a two-dimensional (2D) porous medium.
Design/methodology/approach
Using Fourier and Laplace transformations with the eigenvalue technique, the exact solutions of all physical quantities are obtained.
Findings
The derived method is evaluated with numerical results, which are applied to the porous medium in a simplified geometry.
Originality/value
Finally, the outcomes are graphically represented to show the difference among the models of classical dynamical coupled, the Lord and Shulman and DPL.

Abstract
Purpose
The changing workplace and the disruption and transformation of business processes brought on by modern technology make it difficult for a firm to maintain its existing plans. A management's ability to succeed is related to sustaining and developing its employees to be innovative workers. The idea is to empower subordinates and share authority with them, which increases efficiency.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, it was anticipated that there is a definite relationship between leadership empowerment and workplace cultures of self-esteem, emotional intelligence and creative thinking. Data were obtained using random sample techniques to confirm the hypothesis. A total of 291 Pakistani private-sector employees were surveyed for this study.
Findings
There were positive and substantial links between empowered leadership and creativity, while emotional intelligence and organizational self-esteem have an inverse relationship. For psychological appeal and inventiveness at work, empowerment alone is sufficient. Intellectual stimulus or culture of excessively positive self-esteem may cause numerous limits at work. Hence, management should avoid situations where leaders are predisposed to developing empowering techniques.
Research limitations/implications
This study yields an additional understanding of organizational behavior literature. It was concluded from this study that empowering leaders should avoid using emotional intelligence when scaling up creative strategies. As an alternative, they should develop a culture of self-esteem through emotional intelligence.
Practical implications
Leaders may want to consider demographic values while developing empowerment strategies. It is not recommended to use emotional intelligence and empowerment simultaneously. As a result, this framework suggests a realistic and candid approach that is simple to implement.
Originality/value
Leaders make people aware of the ongoing importance of innovative processes to encourage staff to be creative. Successful leaders may use either empowering culture or leadership empowerment strategies for a more significant appeal. Self-esteem culture may provide a structure of interaction buffer against the other emotions that could counter disruption.

It is beneficial to use strategic management to gain profound, long-term comprehension and learning in challenging topics such as change evaluation. Since the impact of COVID-19, norms changed, complexities developed and situational elements were identified that could be used to improve and manage operations. This change did not spare the tourism and hospitality industry; as a result, this industry is facing a crisis to recover from pandemics. Keeping this in mind, researchers struggle to investigate the phenomenon; quested advantages may be derived for rehabilitation. Strategic leadership perspective is one of them that can be used for more significant tourism industry benefits. Leaders are required to prepare strategies for developing technical abilities to increase the efficiency of their organisations. It must become necessary to have a strategic aim to change existing social and cultural values, religious standards and psychological attitudes under their vision. This chapter aims to apply the theory of change to manage the tourism and hospitality industry's recovery, focusing on strategic leadership's theoretical framework and strategic intent. The chapter includes a study of the literature to determine the effectiveness of strategic intent in the leadership of the tourism industry. In addition, this work debates about building a better and more comprehensive understanding of the factors that influence, contribute to and relate to strategic intention. This chapter draws several beneficial propositions for readers, academicians and practitioners.

Abstract
Purpose
Organizations deal with digital technologies to achieve their strategic goals. The shift toward digitization is a major challenge because it requires companies to create a digital outlook that influences organizational design. As a result, investigation of institutional theory and entrepreneurial orientation theory in the European food industry has become the focus of research in recent times.
Design/methodology/approach
To this end, data were collected from 83 companies related to the food industry in the European context. By applying a hybrid phase of the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and artificial neural network (ANN) methods, this study captured the causal–non-linear relationships among the study constructs.
Findings
The findings revealed that the variables of institutional theory and entrepreneurial orientation theory affect the adoption of the digital strategy. There is also a dual interaction role for e-business capabilities and digital transformation. The results of non-linear relationships confirmed that digital strategy adoption is highly influenced by digital transformation, followed by risk-taking, digital leadership, e-business capabilities, organizational agility, proactiveness and innovativeness.
Research limitations/implications
The authors provided significant implications for practitioners and academics about the most influential determinants of digital strategy – businesses must move swiftly toward digitization across its various units to achieve their objectives. An organization’s leadership must realize that equipping the employees with necessary skills is the first step toward digitalization.
Originality/value
The current study underscores the digital strategy, which is usually an overlooked area of investigation, in the food industry. The study identifies some important predictors of digital strategy adoption with the interaction’s role of digital transformation and e-business capabilities. Such relationships have been rarely discussed. In addition, the adoption of a hybrid SEM-AAN approach makes the study an original one.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to determine the optimum arrangement of a reverse osmosis system in two methods of plug and concentrate recycling.
Design/methodology/approach
To compare the optimum conditions of these two methods, a seawater reverse osmosis system was considered to produce fresh water at a rate of 4,000 m3/d for Mahyarkala city, located in north of Iran, for a period of 20 years. Using genetic algorithms and two-objective optimization method, the reverse osmosis system was designed.
Findings
The results showed that exergy efficiency in optimum condition for concentrate recycling and plug methods was 82.6 and 92.4 per cent, respectively. The optimizations results showed that concentrate recycling method, despite a 36 per cent reduction in the initial cost and a 2 per cent increase in maintenance expenses, provides 6 per cent higher recovery and 19.7 per cent less permeate concentration than two-stage plug method.
Originality/value
Optimization parameters include feed water pressure, the rate of water return from the brine for concentrate recycling system, type of SW membrane, feedwater flow rate and numbers of elements in each pressure vessel (PV). These parameters were also compared to each other in terms of recovery (R) and freshwater unit production cost. In addition, the exergy of all elements was analyzed by selecting the optimal mode of each system.

Abstract
This chapter critically engages with ways that teaching excellence has been operationalised in practice. Specific focus is on developing individual teaching excellence, rewarding of success and recognition of teaching excellence and the building of evidence around what works in teaching for the benefits of students. We consider the daily interactions with students that form the basis of frameworks of teaching excellence before arguing that operationalisations of teaching excellence are highly context specific and operate at the level of institutions and the whole higher education sector. We discuss the criteria that underpin teaching excellence awards. This includes governance as well as development frameworks. After considering the complex links between research and teaching and the importance of the disciplinary dimension of teaching excellence, the chapter finally looks at the skills and attributes commonly associated with individual teacher excellence and argues that these are exceptionally difficult to pin down let alone measure. It concludes with some reflections on some of the challenges faced by institutions as they seek to develop the quality of teaching whilst meeting the requirements of the TEF.

Abstract
This chapter provides an introduction to the problematic notion of teaching excellence in higher education, which is a focus of this collection. It draws on an extensive review of relevant literature to explore how teaching excellence is defined and conceptualised and what factors underpin different conceptions. It notes that definitions are disparate, often context-specific and are influenced by a range of different ‘players’. It then examines how different conceptualisations play out at the macro, meso and micro levels and highlights the tensions between performative and transformative notions of teaching excellence. It notes the move from ‘surface’ to ‘deep’ excellence and efforts to articulate a more holistic conception of teaching excellence that emphasises the relational, emotional and moral dimensions of teaching. It suggests that, rather than seeking singular definitions and conceptions, it may be more useful to talk of ‘teaching excellences’, to reflect a stratified and plural sector, a diverse student body and different disciplinary families. Equally, it argues for further investigation of the intersections of teaching excellence with other key drivers of institutional change, such as student engagement and well-being, inclusion and diversity, widening participation and retention and success.

Purpose
From a lay theory standpoint, the authentic leadership journey has not been perceived together. Both theories are evaluated to determine what may be developed to reflect an authentic leadership journey on an individual's belief of commitment and performance in an organization by evaluating both theories.
Design/methodology/approach
Using simple random sampling, this research used a self-administered questionnaire prepared and distributed to higher education professionals in Islamabad. SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) was used to compute the data and SmartPLS (partial least squares (PLS)) was used to determine the path analysis.
Findings
A human being's need for authenticity is real, but the perspective is more toward better performance. Authenticity does not mean a person can help businesses achieve every goal. Persons may choose what is essential to them, indicating the inner self-awareness of authentic individuals and allowing members to focus on what matters.
Originality/value
This study shed light on a new phenomenon that can help us better comprehend what means to be an authentic leader.
