Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study to minimize the self‐corrosion rate of Type 57S aluminium containing (97.7 per cent Al, 2 per cent Mn and 0.03 per cent Mg) in 2 M NaOH solution containing 0.2 M zinc oxide and 700 ppm of polyaniline.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach is used to measure weight loss and polarization measurements.

Findings

Results obtained show that as the amount of polyaniline is increased, the self‐corrosion rate of Alloy 57S aluminium decreases appreciably. Additionally, the open circuit potential is more in the case of 700 ppm level of polyaniline (−1.630 V) compare to 600 ppm level of polyaniline (−1.587 V). From this paper, it is also observed that the anodic polarization is greater than the cathodic polarization, thereby indicating that the overall corrosion of Alloy 57S 2 M NaOH containing 0.2 M ZnO and 700 ppm of polyaniline is under anodic control.

Originality/value

The results of the study clearly reveal that the overall corrosion of Alloy 57S aluminium in 2 M NaOH containing 0.2 M ZnO and 700 ppm of polyaniline is under anodic control. Hence, the 57S grade aluminium can be used as a potential candidate (anode) in alkaline batteries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe a very low‐cost way to prepare Ge nano/microstructures by means of filling the material inside porous silicon (PS) using a conventional and cost effective technique in which thermal evaporator with PS acts as patterned substrate. Also, the potential metal‐semiconductor‐metal (MSM) photodetector IV characteristics of the structure are demonstrated.

Design/methodology/approach

PS was prepared by anodization of Si wafer in ethanoic hydrofluoric acid. The Ge layer was then deposited onto the PS by thermal evaporation. The process was completed by Ni metal deposition using thermal evaporator followed by metal annealing of 400°C for 10 min. Structural analysis of the samples was performed using energy dispersive X‐ray analysis (EDX), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy.

Findings

A uniform circular network distribution of pores is observed with sizes estimation of 100 nm to 2.5 μm by SEM. Also observed are clusters with near spherical shape clinging around the pores believed to be Ge or GeO2. The EDX spectrum suggests the presence of Ge or GeO2 on and inside the pore structure. Raman spectrum showed that good crystalline structure of the Ge can be produced inside the silicon pores. XRD showed the presence of a Ge phase with the diamond structure by (111), (220), and (400) reflections. Finally, current‐voltage (I‐V) measurement of the Si/Ge/PS MSM photodetector was carried out. It showed lower dark currents compared to control device of Si. The device showed enhanced current gain compared to conventional Si device which can be associated with the presence of Ge nanostructures in the PS.

Originality/value

This paper shows that it is possible to grow Ge nano/microstructure on PS by using a simple and low‐cost method of thermal evaporation and thermal annealing and demonstrates potential MSM photodetector IV characteristics from the device.

Findings

The results of the paper clearly reveal that the 0.2 M ZnO with 700 ppm polyaniline in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone solution is found to offer inhibition up to 71.2 per cent.

Originality/value

The paper deals with the development of newer inhibitor based on polyaniline. Gravimetric and galvanostatic methods were employed to evaluate inhibition efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has been a good example of a Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA) world. Higher educational institutions (HEIs) have faced a massive hit because the jobs in this industry have become unexpected. Considering the most valuable assets ‘Teachers’ crunched in the VUCA crisis, the study intends to determine if personal harmony (PH) and organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) would enhance teachers’ job satisfaction (JS).

Design/methodology/approach: Data are collected from the teachers of Indian HEIs and teachers who have experienced the impact of the COVID-19 catastrophe (VUCA). Considering the pandemic restrictions, data have been collected through an online survey (N = 364).

Practical Implications: PH is an individual’s internal quality and attribute that cannot be developed on force or situational need. Even in an uncertain situation, teachers have tried their best to contribute through professional service. Hence, people who possess PH contribute their best even though unsatisfied with their jobs.

Originality/value: This study has focused on finding the relationship between two different variables, PH and OCB (which has not been explored in Asian countries, majorly in India, where it has a vast cultural diversity and structure influencing the educational policies) that hinders the factors influencing JS, where these two variables are highly influenced by hygiene factors such as values, culture, ethical standards, personal belief, leadership styles, and fair treatment showcased by the organisations/institutions.

Abstract

Poly(styrenesulphonic acid)‐doped polyaniline has been synthesised and the influence of this polymeric compound on the inhibition of corrosion of mild steel in 1M HCl has been investigated using weight loss measurements, galvanostatic polarisation studies, electropermeation studies and a.c. impedance measurements. The polymer acts predominantly as an anodic inhibitor. Hydrogen permeation studies and a.c. impedance measurements clearly indicate a very effective performance of the compound as a corrosion inhibitor. The adsorption of the compound on the mild steel surface obeys Temkin's adsorption isotherm.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a dynamic model for strategic and personalized decision-making in human resources (HR), using data mining techniques to enhance corporate social sustainability (CSS). The focus is on the interconnectedness of employee engagement (EE), enablement and the quality of work life.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed model integrates various HR data, including demographic information, job specifications, payment and rewards, attendance and absence, alongside employees’ perceptions of their work-life quality, engagement and enablement. Data mining processes are applied to generate meaningful insights for senior and middle managers.

Findings

The study implemented the model within a production organization, revealing that factors influencing EE and enablement differ based on gender, marital status and occupational group. Performance-based rewards play a significant role in enhancing engagement, regardless of the reward amount. Factors such as “being recognized for competency” influence engagement for women, while payment has a greater impact on men. Engagement does not directly influence the quality of work life, but subcomponents like perceived transparency and the organization’s processes, particularly the “employee performance evaluation system,” improve work-life quality.

Research limitations/implications

The findings are specific to the studied organization, limiting generalizability. Future research should explore the model’s effectiveness in different cultural and organizational settings.

Practical implications

The proposed model provides practical implications for organizations that enhance CSS. Organizations can gain insights into factors influencing EE and enablement by using data mining techniques, enabling informed decision-making and tailored human resource management practices.

Social implications

This research addresses the societal concern regarding the impact of business activities on sustainability. Organizations can contribute to a more socially responsible and sustainable business environment by focusing on work-life quality and EE.

Originality/value

This paper offers a dynamic model using data mining and machine learning techniques for sustainable human resource management. It emphasizes the importance of customization to align practices with the unique needs of the workforce.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of teachers’ perception on trust over their willingness to exercise organisational citizenship behaviours (OCB) using self-efficacy as a mediator.

Design/methodology/approach

Usable questionnaires were collected from 411 teachers in secondary schools. A two-stage analytic approach was used to analyse the data.

Findings

The results indicated that trust and teachers’ self-efficacy dimensions (general teaching and personal teaching) are positively related to OCB. Additionally, trust in the principal, colleagues and clients are predicted to have indirect influence on OCB through self-efficacy.

Practical implications

Teachers’ personal sense of efficacy is largely dependent on the amount of efforts devoted in their teaching, their decision-making ability and the degree of persistency in solving problematic issues. School management and policy makers are urged to develop effective human resources initiatives and programmes that can create a trusting relationship in the organisation and enhance teachers’ self-efficacy. These may include the socialisation programmes that can inculcate teachers’ inner natures, confidence and interpersonal skills when directed towards perceived abilities in given specific tasks and responsibilities to make a significant impact on OCB. Apart from this, the school administrator is advised to offer relevant training and workshops that able to enhance the efficacy level of teachers.

Originality/value

This study explored how teachers’ self-efficacy was related to trust and OCB. Teachers’ positive behaviours enable them to have greater belief in their capability of handling pressures and crises. The study contributes to the current body of literature and creates a comprehensive theoretical framework for teachers to be involved in OCB. Besides, these unique findings served as a reference to management of any school to better understand the importance of trust in the school and how it relates to teacher self-efficacy, which, in turn nurture the citizenship behaviour in workplace.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to compare the gender gaps in work–life balance satisfaction across occupations. Due to data limitations, the studies of work–life balance satisfaction have generally relied on researcher collected data. As a result, large-scale studies encompassing all occupations in the same social and policy context are rare. In several cycles of the Canadian General Social Survey, the respondents are directly asked about their work–life balance (WLB) satisfaction. The present paper takes advantage of this unique opportunity to compare the gender gap in WLB satisfaction across occupations in Canada.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper pools four cross-sectional datasets (N = 37,335). Multivariate regression analysis is used.

Findings

Women in management and education are found to have a lower WLB satisfaction than their male counterparts. Conversely, and rather surprisingly, a WLB satisfaction advantage is found for women in transport over males in this occupation. Further investigation shows that the female WLB advantage in transport is driven by the relatively low WLB satisfaction of males in this occupation, while the opposite is true for education.

Social implications

The findings are discussed in light of the WLB policies and their increasing gender-blindness.

Originality/value

This paper is the first large-scale study which compares the gender gap in WLB satisfaction across occupations, in a given policy context.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the role of dynamic capabilities (DCs) in the financial performance of the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) during COVID-19. Furthermore, it took chief executive officer gender to moderate the relationship between DCs and financial performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used the survey approach to collect the data. Regression analysis was used on 563 responses to test the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

The results showed that DCs have a significant positive effect on the SME’s operating level and revenues. Moreover, it also moderates the DCs and financial performance during COVID-19. The results revealed that firms that used the DCs during COVID-19 not only survive during the COVID-19 tough time but also enjoyed a decent revenue level.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first study to establish the link between DCs and SMEs operating and revenue level during the COVID-19 pandemic in Pakistani settings.

Abstract

Purpose

Aims to investigate the inhibitive effect of the new series of Schiff base molecules, namely, N, N′‐ethylen‐bis(salicylidenimine) [S1], N, N′‐isopropylen‐bis(salicylidenimine) [S2] and N, N′‐Ortho‐phenylen acetyl acetone imine, (2‐hydroxy Benzophenone imine) [S3] on corrosion of copper during acid pickling treatment in 1 M HCl solution. Effects of concentration and temperature on the inhibition efficiencies of the selected Schiff bases have been studied systematically.

Design/methodology/approach

All inhibition experiments were conducted on copper sample in 1 M HCl solution. Weight loss measurements were carried out according to the ASTM standard procedure. Polarization curves and impedance spectra were carried out in a three‐electrode cell assembly connected to an EG&G potentiostat M273 and frequency response analyzer M1025.

Findings

Results obtained revealed that the studied Schiff bases act predominantly as cathodic inhibitors. The variations in inhibition efficiencies mainly depend on the type and nature of the inhibitors. Polarization and ac impedance measurements carried out at different concentrations of studied Schiff bases revealed that these compounds are adsorbed on copper surface and the adsorption obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm. From the adsorption isotherms, the values of equilibrium constant, Kads, and the free energies of adsorption, ΔGads, were calculated. The associated activation energy of corrosion and other thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpies and entropies have also been determined.

Practical implications

The presence of high efficiency and low cost inhibitors is essential in acid pickling treatments for protection of copper and lowering of acid consumption. In comparison with conventional copper corrosion inhibitors such as benzotriazole, this result would be considered as a step forward in determination of new corrosion inhibitor.

Originality/value

This paper reveals that Schiff bases can be successfully used for protection of copper surface in acid pickling solutions.
