Abstract

3‐D Reluctance Network Method has proved as an effective, experimentally verified method of an evaluation of leakage fields and interactive design of screens. Though relative loss distribution is also easy to obtain the evaluation of absolute value — due to higher order of nonlinearity is much more difficult. In the paper analysis of this problem and simplified method of total loss calculation in tank wall, with semiempirical correction is given.

Abstract

Among the many calculation methods that allow the evaluation of magnetic field in different electromagnetic devices is the Reluctance Network Method (RNM). It is based on network theory according to which the analysed space is replaced by the network of magnetic reluctances, with magnetomotive forces as supply sources. This method makes it possible to analyse magnetic fields in two‐dimensional (2‐D) and three‐dimensional (3‐D) domains, and in comparison to other numerical methods (e.g. Finite‐Element Method) the calculation time is much shorter, with relatively good accuracy.

Introduction Academic institutions involved in electrical engineering education now realise the importance of students' understanding of the concepts of magnetic fields and their application in various electromechanical devices and systems. Abstract

Purpose

One of the recommendations in process-based cognitive therapies suggests that functional analysis created by the clinician should be supported by empirical data collected through daily sampling. It enables the computing of a dynamic network of psychological processes and symptoms supporting clinical decisions but also therapeutic progress monitoring. However, the experience sampling solutions available in the market do not enable the automatic creation of this kind of network; thus, the use of this approach in clinical practice is practically impossible without advanced statistical skills and significant time investment. The purpose of the present paper is to describes a protocol of a research project based on a participatory approach aiming to create a solution enabling therapists not only to set up a personalized daily sampling for their patients and collect the data but also providing a fully automated visualization of the network adapted for therapeutic purposes.

Design/methodology/approach

The project will require creating a platform for therapists where they can set up monitoring and receive dynamic networks visualization, creating an experience sampling application for patients connected to the platform and creating an optimal data visualization system that will enable therapists to accurately and quickly interpret the network. A series of participatory workshops, qualitative and quantitative studies are described.

Findings

The presented studies will enable us to evaluate the ergonomy of use of both platform and app in laboratory and ecological settings along with the evaluation of network interpretation accuracy.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first participatory design protocol for creating a solution that might enable clinicians to use a dynamic network approach in their everyday clinical practice. The challenges and opportunities of creating this kind of mHealth solution are discussed.

Abstract

Recent progress in the development of electromagnetic field theory and sophisticated software for solution of complicated, non‐linear, 3‐D structures is not always accompanied with relatively cheap and simply presented engineering instructions, easy to use for regular industrial design. In the paper some theoretical and practical examples are given as to how one can get over a excessive calculating difficulties to obtain quickly simple design directions and reduce complicated theory to simple practical conclusions. The fast and cheap package RNM‐3D is validated by comparison with industrial test data and with the interactive graphics system is the final illustration of the effectiveness of such an approach. RNM‐3D is used successfully in many transformer works the world over.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to enhance and complement teaching about resource system feedbacks and environmental modelling. Students were given an interactive exercise based on a research model (ForeseerTM), developed by an inter-disciplinary research team, that explores the interconnectivity of water, energy and land resources. Two groups of students were involved, one of undergraduates and the other of graduates.

Design/methodology/approach

The Foreseer model represents physical flows of the three resources (water, energy and land) using an interactive visual interface. The exercise was set up by giving students short instructions about how to use the tool to create four scenarios, and an online questionnaire was used to capture their understanding and their ability to extract information from the model.

Findings

The exercise proved to be a helpful way to connect research and teaching in higher education, to the benefit of both. For students, it was an interactive and engaging way to learn about these complex sustainability issues. At the same time, it provided tangible feedback to researchers working on the model about the clarity of its user interface and its pedagogic value.

Originality/value

This exercise represents a novel use of a resource model as a teaching tool in the study of the water, energy and land nexus, and is relevant to sustainability educators as an example of a model-centred learning approach on this topic.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a novel method to identify demagnetization faults in the magnet of a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) using some externally measurable parameter.

Design/methodology/approach

The machine is modelled by using permeance network theory. The new feature introduced in the permeance network is the subdivision of magnets into segments, modelled as bidirectional elements. These bidirectional elements allow taking into account the effect of one element on the other. To detect the demagnetization faults, a gradient‐based algorithm is also developed. This algorithm uses the permeance network model of the PMSM and measurement data of some parameter to find the distribution of remanent induction in the magnet segments.

Findings

The methodology presented is able to detect the demagnetization fault using an external data. The measurement data in this paper is obtained through finite element simulations. The fast and accurate convergence of the algorithm makes the model to find its place in magnet fault diagnosis. Results for different magnet fault types have been presented.

Originality/value

This new approach to detect demagnetization fault can serve as a step towards development of better fault‐detection algorithms and fault‐tolerant control schemes.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present recently published resources on library instruction and information literacy. It provides an introductory overview and a selected annotated bibliography of publications organized thematically and detailing, study populations, results and research contexts. The selected bibliography is useful to efficiently keep up with trends in library instruction for academic library practitioners, library science students and those wishing to learn about information literacy in other contexts.

Design/methodology/approach

This article annotates 340 English-language periodical articles, dissertations, theses and reports on library instruction and information literacy published in 2022. The sources were selected from the EBSCO platform for Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA), Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), Elsevier SCOPUS and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. Sources selected were published in 2022 and included the terms “information literacy,” “library instruction,” or “information fluency” in the title, subject terms, or author supplied keywords. The sources were organized in Zotero. Annotations were made summarizing the source, focusing on the findings or implications. Each source was then thematically categorized and organized for academic librarians to be able to skim and use the annotated bibliography efficiently.

Findings

The paper provides a brief description of 340 sources from 144 unique publications, and highlights publications that contain unique or significant scholarly contributions. Further analysis of the sources and authorship are provided.

Originality/value

The information is primarily of use to academic librarians, researchers, and anyone interested as a quick and comprehensive reference to literature on library instruction and information literacy published within 2022.
