Abstract

Purpose

This work aims to investigate the feasibility of recycling waste plastic (polyethylene terephthalate) as a coarse aggregate for producing blended cement concrete modified with fly ash and pond ash.

Design/methodology/approach

The low, medium and high controlled strength blended cement concrete modified with varied proportions of fly and pond ashes were produced. Manufactured sand and recycled plastic coarse aggregate (RPCA) replaced normal fine and coarse aggregates. Concrete samples were tested for workability, mechanical and durability characteristics. Microstructural analysis was performed on cement concrete blended with fly and pond ashes and compared to conventional concrete samples.

Findings

All concrete mixes showed better flowability with values greater than 200 mm. Besides, the maximum flow time was approximately 8 s. The wet density of blended cement concrete-RPCA-based concretes was approximately 30% lower than that of conventional concrete. The compressive strengths of the controlled strength mix at 7 and 28 days were within the specified ranges. While the conventional concrete had slightly higher permeability, the blended cement concrete-RPCA-based concretes had better thermal resistivity and lower thermal conductivity. The scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed the densification of the microstructure due to the filler effects of fly and pond ashes.

Originality/value

This study establishes the prospects of substituting RPCA with normal coarse aggregate in the production of controlled low-strength blended cement concrete, offering benefits of structural fill concrete, lower permeability and thermal conductivity, higher thermal resistivity and reduced density and shrinkage.

This case is suitable for students in finance, entrepreneurship and general management. The case seeks to understand the challenges of funding in technology startups and how they vary from product to service areas.

Case overview

Availability of capital, short term and long term, is a major constraint faced by entrepreneurs. In India, in the technology sector, services companies have been able to innovate and grow whereas product-based companies that survived the challenges of funding have been scarce. Aluru Karthik Prasanth is presented in the case as a young entrepreneur with passion and drive to pursue the commercialization of an idea he developed during his undergraduate studies in engineering. Leaving behind the beaten paths ofMTech and employment, he decides to pursue MS entrepreneurship at IIT Madras. As he starts with his program, he analyses the challenges faced by previous technology start ups, Karthik has a dilemma – deciding whether to follow a product idea or change his plans to a technology service.

Expected learning outcomes

A detailed analysis of the case would help students address the following questions in entrepreneurial decision making: should an entrepreneur in technology in India pursue a product idea or service idea?. What are the pros and cons of each choice in financing? How can an entrepreneur pursue a product idea and minimize his/her risks? How does an entrepreneur's personal attributes influence his/her course? (e.g. family background, need for control) What are the challenges and opportunities in each kind of funding: debt, venture, angel, etc. in the Indian context?

Abstract

Purpose

The rousing phenomenon of the ageing population is becoming a vital issue and demanding fulminant actions. Population ageing is a resultant of the enhanced health-care system, groovy antibiotics, medications and economic well-being. Old age leads to copious amounts of ailments. Aged people, owing to their reduced mobility and enervating disabilities, tend to rely upon caretakers and/or nursing personnel. With the increasing vogue of nuclear families in the society, the elderly are at the risk of being unveiled to emotional, physical and fiscal insecurities in the years to come. Caring for those seniors will be an enormous undertaking.

Design/methodology/approach

There is a dire need for an intelligent assistive system to meet out the requirements of continuous holistic care and monitoring. Assistive robots and systems used for elderly care are studied. The design motivation for the robots, elderly–robot interaction capabilities and technology incorporated in the systems are examined meticulously.

Findings

From the survey, it is suggested that the subsystems of an assistive robot revamped for better human–machine interactions will be a potential alternative to the human counterpart. Affirmable advancements in the robot design and interaction methodologies that would increase the holistic care and assistance for aged people are analyzed and listed.

Originality/value

This paper reviews the available assistive technologies and suggests a synergistic model that can be adopted for the caring of the elderly.

Abstract

Purpose

Although the impostor phenomenon is attributed to childhood experiences, theory on achievement motivation indicates that achievement-related fears can also be elicited by the context. Using achievement goal theory as a base, the authors investigate the effect of context-dependent predictors, job-fit, career stage and organisational tenure, on impostor fears. The authors also examined gender and the achievement-related traits, self-efficacy and locus of control, as predictors of impostor fears to advance knowledge on antecedents to impostor fears.

Design/methodology/approach

Two studies were conducted with 270 and 280 participants, each. In Study 1, a subset of 12 respondents participated in follow-up interviews.

Findings

Impostor fears tended to be predicted by organisational tenure and career stage in both studies and job-fit in Study 1. Self-efficacy and locus of control predicted impostor fears. Men and women reported similar levels of impostor fears.

Practical implications

The authors demonstrate the importance of context in eliciting impostor fears and partially support initial descriptions of antecedents to impostor fears. The findings contribute to the development of targeted managerial practices that can help with the development of interventions, such as orientation programmes, that will enhance socialisation processes and mitigate impostor fears.

Originality/value

The literature on imposter fears has not addressed their situational predictors, which the authors argue are important elements in the genesis and maintenance of impostor fears. The authors draw on achievement goal theory to explain the pattern of findings related to key situational characteristics and their influence on imposter fears. The findings for Sri Lanka, on personality predictors, are similar to those reported in studies focused on North America providing evidence of cross-cultural applicability of the concept.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the mechanical properties and slurry erosion behaviour of 10TiO2-Cr2O3 coated turbine steel.

Design/methodology/approach

Slurry erosion experiments were performed on the coated turbine steel specimens using slurry erosion test rig under accelerated conditions such as rotational speed, average particle size and slurry concentration. Surface roughness tester, Vickers microhardness tester and scanning electron microscope were used to analyse erosion mechanism.

Findings

Under all experimental conditions, 10TiO2-Cr2O3 coated steel showed better slurry erosion resistance in comparison with Al2O3 coated and uncoated steel specimens. Each experimental condition indicated a significant effect on the erosion rate of both coatings and uncoated steel. The surface analysis of uncoated eroded specimen revealed that plastic deformation, ploughing and deep craters formation were the reasons for mass loss, whereas microchipping, ploughing and microcutting were the reasons for mass loss of coated specimens.

Originality/value

The present investigation provides novel insight into the comparative slurry erosion performance of high velocity oxy fuel deposited 10TiO2-Cr2O3 and Cr2O3 coatings under various environmental conditions. To form modified powder, 10 Wt.% TiO2 was added to 90 Wt.% Cr2O3.

Developing nations are starting to take centre stage and are becoming more conscious of their economic potential in the tourism sector. Earlier, these countries were largely left out of the tourist sector. Today, the foreign exchange reserves of these nations are mostly derived from tourism and a nation's balance of payments derived through tourism supports international trade and stabilizes the economy. The chapter adopts a case study method to evaluate the prospects of inclusive growth through socio economic well-being. In the dynamic and constantly evolving tourism industry, it is imperative to make the growth more inclusive so that there is a balanced approach to long term sustainable development. When it comes to using traditional skills and cultural heritage to participate in this economic paradigm, rural artisans face both opportunities and challenges as the global tourism landscape undergoes evolving transformations. The study commences by closely examining the current market obstacles that rural artisans in the tourism industry face, which encompass a range of issues such as shifting consumer preferences, market saturation and the aftermath of external shocks like pandemics. The chapter indicates major obstacles impeding the integration of rural artisans into the tourism value chain by means of a thorough empirical analysis. In order to overcome the obstacles, the study investigates inclusive growth and how it might act as a spur to improve the socio-economic circumstances of rural craftsmen. The findings in the chapter distil best practices that promote inclusivity, empower local communities and support sustainable tourism development by looking at successful case studies and policy interventions.

Abstract

Purpose

Renewable energy sources and smart devices are options for those wishing to lessen their reliance on fossil fuels. Smart devices in the home also allow energy providers to remotely control energy use (RCEU). However, little is understood about consumer’s perceptions of RCEU programs. Based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), it is proposed that environmental attitudes, environmental self-identity, green history, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control will predict differences in both purchase intentions and RCEU.

Design/methodology/approach

Data from 692 participants was collected via an online survey of energy consumers. The relationship between study variables was examined using regression analyses.

Findings

The results indicate that environmental attitude, environmental identity, green history and perceived behavioral control are positively related to both purchase intentions and RCEU. The results could have important implications for energy providers, practitioners, energy consumers and citizens interested in environmental issues.

Originality/value

As energy providers consider ways to better manage consumer energy use, RCEU has been used more frequently. However, understanding customer perceptions of RCEU is not well-established in the green energy literature. This paper contributes a first step towards the understanding of RCEU perceptions.

Abstract

Purpose

When processing 11Cr-3Co-3W martensitic heat-resistant steel, the traditional pouring cooling method often appears large cutting force, high cutting temperature, serious tool wear and poor surface quality. This paper aims to use new cooling methods for processing this problem.

Design/methodology/approach

Different performance indicators such as cutting force, tool wear and surface quality were measured and analysed under different continuous milling times. The relationship between liquid nitrogen flow and cutting force and surface roughness was analysed and measured.

Findings

The results show that with the increase of liquid nitrogen flow, the cutting force decreases, especially the Fx component, which decreases by 10%. When the liquid nitrogen flow reaches 8 L/min, the effect of increasing the liquid nitrogen flow on reducing the cutting force becomes smaller. The cutting force reduced by up to 15%, and the tool life increased up to 20% using liquid nitrogen cryogenic cooling than in cutting liquids cooling. When minimal quantities of lubricant (MQL) was added, the cutting force was reduced by 23%, and the tool life increased by 25%. When the cutting speed increases from 100 m/min to 250 m/min, the cutting force with cutting liquid cooling does not change significantly while the cutting force with liquid nitrogen cooling decreases with the cutting speed increasing. It shows that liquid nitrogen cooling is more suitable for high-speed machining. After the cutting length reaches 66 m, the surface roughness of the workpiece using liquid nitrogen cooling method larger than that of the cutting liquid cooling method. When MQL is added into liquid nitrogen, the lubrication performance is improved, and the surface roughness of the workpiece is reduced about 8%.

Originality/value

Many studies had focused on the improvement of tool life and surface quality by different cooling methods, or on the injection process and chip mechanism. However, there are few relevant studies on the variation of cooling and lubrication properties with the change of cutting length in liquid nitrogen cryogenic processing. In this research, different performance indicators such as cutting force, tool wear and surface quality were measured and analysed under different continuous milling times. The relationship between liquid nitrogen flow and cutting force and surface roughness was analysed and measured.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the machining performance of CVD-coated carbide tools by considering most crucial machinability aspects: cutting force, tool life, surface roughness and chip morphology in high-speed hard turning of AISI 4340 alloy steel under a sustainable minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) environment.

Design/methodology/approach

The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of coated carbide tools under MQL environment therefore, machining tests were performed in accordance with the Taguchi L9 orthogonal array, accommodating the three crucial machining parameters such as cutting speed (V = 300–400 m/min), feed rate (F = 0.1–0.2 mm/rev) and depth of cut (DOC = 0.2–0.4 mm). The measured or calculated values obtained in each experimental run were validated for normality assumptions before drawing any statistical inferences. Taguchi signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio and analysis of variance methodologies were used to examine the effect of machining variables on the performance outcomes.

Findings

The quantitative analysis revealed that the depth of cut exerted the most significant influence on cutting force, with a contributing rate of 60.72%. Cutting speed was identified as the primary variable affecting the tool life, exhibiting a 47.58% contribution, while feed rate had the most dominating impact on surface roughness, with an overall contributing rate of 89.95%. The lowest cutting force (184.55 N) and the longest tool life (7.10 min) were achieved with low machining parameters at V = 300 m/min, F = 0.1 mm/rev, DOC = 0.2 mm. Conversely, the lowest surface roughness (496 nm) was achieved with high cutting speed, low feed rate and moderate depth of cut at V = 400 m/min, F = 0.1 mm/rev and DOC = 0.3 mm. Moreover, the microscopic examination of the chips revealed a serrated shape formation under all machining conditions. However, the degree of serration increased with an incremental raise with cutting speed and feed rate.

Research limitations/implications

The study is limited to study the effect of machining parameters within the stated range of cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut as well as other parameters.

Practical implications

Practitioners may consider to adopt this machining technique to create more sustainable working environment as well as eliminate the disposal cost of the used metal cutting fluid.

Social implications

By applying this machining technique, diseases caused by metal cutting fluid to the mechanist will be significantly reduced, therefore creating better lifestyles.

Originality/value

Hard turning is commonly carried out with advanced cutting tools such as ceramics, cubic boron nitride and polycrystalline cubic boron nitride to attain exceptional surface finish. However, the high cost of these tools necessitates exploration of alternative approaches. Therefore, this study investigates the potential of using cost-effective, multilayer-coated carbide tools under MQL conditions to achieve comparable surface quality.
