Abstract

Purpose

Maintenance is constantly challenged to increase productivity by maximizing up‐time and reliability while at the same time reducing maintenance expenditure and investment. Traditional reliability models are based on detailed statistical analysis of individual component failures. For complex machinery, especially involving many rotable parts, such analyses are difficult and time‐consuming. This paper aims to propose an alternative method for estimating and improving reliability.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology is based on simulating the up‐time of the machine or process as a series of critical modules. Each module is characterized by an empirically derived failure distribution. The simulation model consists of a number of stages including operational up‐time, maintenance down‐time and a user‐interface allowing maintenance and replacement decisions.

Findings

Initial analysis performed on aircraft gas‐turbine data yielded an optimal combination of modules out of a pool of multiple spares, resulting in an increased machine up‐time of 16 percent.

Practical implications

The benefits of this methodology are that it is capable of providing reliability trends and forecasts in a short time frame and is based on available data. In addition, it takes into account the rotable nature of many components by tracking the life and service history of individual parts and allowing the user to simulate different combinations of rotables and operating scenarios. Importantly, as more data become available or as greater accuracy is demanded, the model or database can be updated or expanded, thereby approaching the results obtainable by pure statistical reliability analysis.

Originality/value

The model presented provides senior maintenance managers with a decision tool that optimizes the life cycle maintenance cost of complex machinery in a short time frame by taking into account the rotable nature of modules.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss operation and maintenance challenges under Arctic conditions and to propose a methodology to assess systems' reliability, maintainability and maintenance costs under the influence of the Arctic operational environment.

Design/methodology/approach

A model is suggested for quantifying maintenance costs while taking into account uncertainty due to lack of appropriate data and operational experience using the proportional hazard model and proportional repair model as well as Monte Carlo simulation.

Findings

The results show that the operating environment has a considerable influence on the number of failures, the maintenance and repair times and consequently on maintenance cost. Forecasting the maintenance costs based on technical characteristics (e.g. reliability and maintainability) and considering the operational environment, as well as including uncertainty analysis using Monte Carlo simulation, provide more trustworthy information in the decision‐making process.

Practical implications

There are few data and little experience available regarding the operation of offshore oil and gas production systems in the Arctic region. Using the available data collected from similar systems, but in a different operational environment, may result in uncertain or incorrect analysis results. Hence, the method that is used for maintenance cost analysis must be able to quantify the effect of the operating environment on the system reliability and maintainability as well as to quantify the uncertainty.

Originality/value

The paper presents a statistical approach that will be useful in predicting maintenance cost considering the lack of appropriate reliability data from equipment operated in Arctic conditions. The approach presented is valuable for the industrial practitioners in the Arctic region, and may also be adapted to other areas where there is lack of data and operational experience.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a relatively straightforward approach of implementing standard statistical process control (SPC) concepts while instituting problem‐solving intonations in aero‐engine maintenance processes.

Design/methodology/approach

The inspection workflow approach is presented in order to aid in collecting and monitoring critical aero‐engine data. Observed defects are categorized according to a Pareto analysis assisted by a cause‐and‐effect diagram. A binomial process capability analysis is performed on nonconforming aero‐engines based on operating curves produced specifically for this case study. The time frame for experimental analysis is reflected in a span of six months.

Findings

It is found that a significant number of aero‐engines may be benefited by entering a more progressive maintenance program relying on predictive maintenance on the way to establishing a more effective Total Productive Maintenance scheme.

Research limitations/implications

The case study showcases an approach to aero‐engine rejection statistical rates by accepting the fact that maintenance process may not be viewed as a process that may be limited to constant sampling.

Practical implications

For a long time, total quality management (TQM) tools have been deeply rooted in design, manufacturing and assembling of airliners and jet fighters alike. However, a comprehensive study focusing on the maintenance function of such complex machines may prove worthwhile now that an unstable global economy may prohibit extensive replacement of aging flying fleets.

Originality/value

With the lack of a prior practical unfolding in the field of genuine aero‐engine maintenance, this presentation aims to fill in the gap for engine rejection treatment. The variant operating curve notion introduced in the text is also a unique idea espoused for variable sampling situations when a binomial distribution is adopted.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a new interdisciplinary methodology to estimate the life cycle cost (LCC) of complex business-to-business products in order to price different types of maintenance contracts and show the applicability of the method in a case study. LCC comprise of initial capital costs as well of operation costs including probabilistic costs (such as the costs of repairs and spare parts), which are directly linked to the maintenance characteristics of the product.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper proposes an integrated and practical methodology that applies different approaches from different disciplines. Therefore, exponential distributions for failure rates in subsystems, World Bank logistics factors for logistics costs of spare part handling, as well implied credit default probabilities for the counterpart risk in full service leasing contracts are applied. In order to validate the applicability of the proposed methodology to practical problems, the tool is applied in three case studies.

Findings

The results of the case studies show that this methodology can be applied to analyze LCC structures of engines operating in various regions with regard to different types of engine maintenance contracts. The results also highlight the interplay of technical as well as financial risks.

Originality/value

Because the literature in maintenance engineering so far either proposes general frameworks to calculate LCC or concentrates on specific aspects of LCC, the paper contributes to the literature in presenting a new interdisciplinary methodology to estimate the LCC.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on maintenance management and suggest possible gaps from the point of view of researchers and practitioners.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper systematically categorizes the published literature and then analyzes and reviews it methodically.

Findings

The paper finds that important issues in maintenance management range from various optimization models, maintenance techniques, scheduling, and information systems etc. Within each category, gaps have been identified. A new shift in maintenance paradigm is also highlighted.

Practical implications

Literature on classification of maintenance management has so far been very limited. This paper reviews a large number of papers in this field and suggests a classification in to various areas and sub areas. Subsequently, various emerging trends in the field of maintenance management are identified to help researchers specifying gaps in the literature and direct research efforts suitably.

Originality/value

The paper contains a comprehensive listing of publications on the field in question and their classification according to various attributes. The paper will be useful to researchers, maintenance professionals and others concerned with maintenance to understand the importance of maintenance management

Abstract

Purpose

These days vehicles' spare parts (SPs) are a very big market, and there is a very high demand for these parts. Forecasting vehicles' SPs price and demand are difficult because of the lack of data and the pricing of the SPs is not following the normal value chain methods like normal products.

Design/methodology/approach

A proposed model using multiple linear regression was developed as a guide to forecasting demand and price for vehicles' SPs. A case study of selected hybrid vehicle is held to validate the results of the research. This research is an original study depending on quantitative and qualitative methods; some factors are generated from realistic data or are calculated using numerical equations and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method; online questionnaire and expert interview survey.

Findings

The price and demand for SPs have a linear relationship with some independent variables is the hypothesis that is tested. Even though the proposed models are generally recommended for predicting demand and price, in this research the linear relationship models are not significant enough to calculate the expected price and demand.

Originality/value

This research should concern both academics and practitioners since it provides new intuitions on the distinctions between scientific and industrial world regarding SPs for vehicles as it is the first study that investigates price and demand of vehicles' SPs.

Abstract

Certain elements of Hayek’s work are prominent precursors to the modern field of complex adaptive systems, including his ideas on spontaneous order, his focus on market processes, his contrast between designing and gardening, and his own framing of complex systems. Conceptually, he was well ahead of his time, prescient in his formulation of novel ways to think about economies and societies. Technically, the fact that he did not mathematically formalize most of the notions he developed makes his insights hard to incorporate unambiguously into models. However, because so much of his work is divorced from the simplistic models proffered by early mathematical economics, it stands as fertile ground for complex systems researchers today. I suggest that Austrian economists can create a progressive research program by building models of these Hayekian ideas, and thereby gain traction within the economics profession. Instead of mathematical models the suite of techniques and tools known as agent-based computing seems particularly well-suited to addressing traditional Austrian topics like money, business cycles, coordination, market processes, and so on, while staying faithful to the methodological individualism and bottom-up perspective that underpin the entire school of thought.

The epithet “Austrian” in “Austrian economics” is applied to the work of economists as far apart in time as Carl Menger, whose Grundsätze der Volkswirthschaftslehre (Principles of Political Economy) first appeared in 1871, and Ludwig Lachmann, Israel Kirzner and Murray Rothbard, writing a century or more later. It would be vain to attempt to define Austrian economics by a set of beliefs, commonly held by its adherents. There is much to be said for following Zuidema (1987), who prefers to speak of “styles” rather than “schools”. This implies that there need be no clear‐cut dividing lines between Austrians and the rest of the economics fraternity and that not all those dubbed “Austrian” are necessarily “typically” Austrian all of the time. There certainly seems to be a style of reasoning that can be seen as specifically Austrian. Some of the components of a “style” mentioned by Zuidema are:

Abstract

Purpose

Evidence-based practice is pivotal to effective patient care. However, its translation into practice remains limited. Given the central role of primary care in many healthcare systems, it is important to identify strategies that bolster clinician-capacity to promote evidence-based care. The purpose of this paper is to identify strategies to increase Practice Nurse capacity to promote evidence-based sexual healthcare within general practice.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey of 217 Practice Nurses in an Australian state and ten respondent-interviews regarding two resources to promote evidence-based sexual healthcare – namely, a clinical aide and online training.

Findings

The perceived impact of both resources was determined by views on relevance and design – particularly for the clinical aide. Resource-use was influenced by role and responsibilities within the workplace, accessibility, and support from patients and colleagues.

Research limitations/implications

This is the first Australian study to reveal strategies to promote evidence-based sexual healthcare among Practice Nurses. The findings provide a platform for future research on knowledge translation processes, particularly among clinicians who might be disengaged from sexual healthcare.

Practical implications

Given the benefits of evidence-based practices, it is important that managers recognize their role, and the role of their services, in promoting these. Without explicit support for evidence-based care and recognition of the Practice Nurse role in such care, knowledge translation is likely to be limited.

Originality/value

Knowledge translation among Practice Nurses can be facilitated by: resources-deemed informative, relevant, and user-friendly, as well as support from patients, colleagues, and their workplace.
