Abstract

Purpose

Many electric circuits feature some type of non-linearity of their used devices. Non-linear resistors or inductors could be typical examples. Also, all semiconductor devices are in their nature non-linear ones. The simulation models are very important parts of the design of the devices in various fields of industry. Multiply (multiple) simulation, verified by the measurement on the physical sample, help to improve the converter design by understanding the current and voltage behavior of non-linear elements. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Mathematical model of LCTLC inverter was made. Fictitious exciting function was applied on LCTLC inverter model. The non-linear inductance with the real core EFD model has been created and consequentially used for MatLab simulation experiments. MatLab and OrCAD/PSpice simulation results were compared with experimental measurements carried out on physical sample.

Findings

The authors have found how to simulate non-linear resonant circuits within mathematical apparatus using fictitious exciting function method. The authors provided comparisons between proposed simulation mathematical model and relevant physical sample. Multiply simulations can help to improve the converter design by understanding the current and voltage behavior of non-linear elements.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed method is applicable for simulation purposes. The only limitation is that MatLab model does not include hysteresis curve of the core, therefore it has to be modeled.

Practical implications

The design of power supplies (switched mode power supplies, UPS and resonant inverter).

Originality/value

Research in the area of behaviors of non-linear components in resonant circuits.

Abstract

This paper presents a prototype of the collaborative problem solving environment (PSE) for flood forecasting. Flood forecasting is a complex problem that requires cooperation of many scientists in different areas. To enable this cooperation in a manner comfortable to hydrometeorological experts, a part of the CrossGrid project is aimed towards developing a PSE, whose prototype is described here. The PSE consists of a cascade of simulation models, a storage system for computed and measured data and other used datasets, a Web‐based portal with collaboration tools and a powerful computation facility. The whole system is tied together by grid technology and is used to support a virtual organization of experts, developers and users.

Abstract

This paper presents real time hardware implementation of DSP based 180 degree control algorithm and MATLAB SIMULINK based software Implementation for 3-phase 4-leg IGBT based voltage source inverter. Triggering pulses generated using Texas Instruments TMS 320F28335 DSP controller and that triggers the 6 IGBTs of Voltage source inverter. Results of pulse generated using DSP and output of the Voltage source inverter were captured using Digital Storage Oscilloscope. FFT analysis for output signal of software and hardware implementation presented with the analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate television viewing habits of children from low-income families, their consumption of fruits, vegetables and snacks, as well as their spending habits.

Design/methodology/approach

11 focus groups were conducted with 54 public school students aged seven to ten years, divided by sex and age. Transcription of the discussions was processed by content analysis. Family income was indirectly assessed through classification of parents' occupations.

Findings

The habit of watching television was very present in the students' routines, as was eating in front of the television set. Eating fruits and vegetables was a habit, but frequent consumption of snack foods was also reported. Students had money of their own to spend independently and did it mostly on snacks. Parental interference over their habits was not perceived by the students. Television watching was a regular activity not only for the children, but also for their families. Even though research design could not establish a causal relationship, consumption and acquisition of unhealthy food items was routine, as well as watching television.

Research limitations/implications

Results are of local nature and findings may differ from those of other regions or countries. Also, students were conveniently selected, and as volunteers they may have been more likely to have an interest in matters related to nutrition, or could have misreported their eating behaviours to be more socially desirable than they actually were.

Originality/value

Qualitative investigation regarding television viewing habits, food choices and purchases of Brazilian low-income children.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to find a speed control structure with two degrees of freedom robust against drive parameters variations. Application of structure model following control (MFC) and fuzzy technique in the controller of PI type creates proper non‐linear characteristics, which ensures controller robustness.

Design/methodology/approach

The use of proper structure with two degrees of freedom and non‐linear characteristic introduced by fuzzy technique ensures the robustness of the speed control system. The paper proposes a novel approach to MFC synthesis to be performed in two stages. The first stage consists in the set value of P type controller of model and the process controller simultaneously should be designing by fuzzy technique. At the second stage of the synthesis consist in tuning parameters of process fuzzy controller by the swarm of particles method (particle swarm optimization) on the basis of a defined quality index formulated in the paper. The synthesis is performed using simulation techniques and subsequently the behavior of a laboratory speed control system is validated in the experimental setup. The control algorithms of the system are performed by a microprocessor floating point DSP control system.

Findings

Use of proper structure with two degrees of freedom of the non‐linear fuzzy controller guarantees expected robustness and improves the dynamics of speed control significantly.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed structure of MFC was tested on a single machine under well‐defined conditions. Further investigations are required before any industrial applications.

Practical implications

The proposed controller synthesis and its results may be very helpful in robotic system where changing of system parameters is characteristic for many industrial robots and manipulators.

Originality/value

The paper proposes an original method of synthesis of robust system with two degrees of freedom system validated by simulation and experimental investigations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose a collaborative knowledge-based ontological research model for designing a collaborative product development process (PDP) while considering different design for X techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

This study follows a thematic literature analysis to identify the key design concepts needed to assess environmental, service, safety, manufacture and assembly, supply chain and quality concerns in developing a collaborative PDP.

Findings

The proposed model provides a guide for methodology, engineering and ontology evaluation metrics (verification, assessment and validation). The findings benefit both practitioners and managers because they address the key knowledge taxonomy needed to assist them in storing information, promoting teamwork and making decisions in a collaborative PDP while incorporating various design for X approaches and product life cycles.

Originality/value

This study introduces a novel knowledge-based collaborative ontological research model, which is specifically designed to tackle the challenges of developing collaborative products in the contemporary landscape. The model presents a significant and valuable contribution to the field by introducing an ontological approach for acquiring, representing and leveraging knowledge in a computer-interpretable format to support the design of collaborative products. In addition, it provides a comprehensive guide for evaluating the effectiveness and efficacy of the ontology developed.
