Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide an integrated approach that prioritizes organizational key performance indicators (KPIs) in terms of the criteria of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time‐sensitive) goal setting.

Design/methodology/approach

The research was carried out using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) technique as the basis for pairwise comparisons of SMART criteria, considering each KPI.

Findings

A new approach is outlined, encompassing step‐by‐step guidelines for decision makers to conduct the prioritization process of SMART KPIs. The results of the case study highlight the applicability of the proposed approach and the calculation process for prioritizing KPIs.

Research limitations/implications

The rating scales used in the AHP analysis are conceptual; although it identifies which dimensions require improvement, the proposed approach does not provide guidance on an appropriate action plan to address deficiencies; another limitation is that the framework adopted only the SERVQUAL service dimensions.

Originality/value

This paper gives a novel approach for prioritization of KPIs. The proposed approach has a holistic mechanism; it could empower decision‐making teams; it is capable of enhancing advanced quality engineering approaches; and provides great opportunities for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the increasing attention on ChatGPT in academia due to its advanced features and capabilities, this study aims to examine the links among Artificial intelligence (AI), knowledge sharing, ethics, academia and libraries in educational institutions. Moreover, this study also aims to provide a literature base while discussing recent trends in AI and ChatGPT technologies, highlighting their specific uses in institutions.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper involves a structured interview format where a human interviewer poses questions “Qs” in ChatGPT, related to knowledge sharing, ethics, academia and libraries. Moreover a literature base is also provide to discussed recent trends in AI and ChatGPT technologies, highlighting their specific uses in institutions.

Findings

The study find out that AI and ChatGPT technologies in educational institutions affect knowledge sharing, ethical consideration, academia and libraries. This study also highlights literature directions for the trends and proper use of the AI and ChatGPT among institutions, such as improving student-learning engagement.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the prior literature by offering an in-depth review of current uses and applications of AI and ChatGPT in educational institutions. It not only highlights key trends and innovations but also provides insights and guidelines for future research. This study also provides insights and guidelines for future research. Furthermore, the article emphasizes the potential impact of AI and ChatGPT on the future of education and technology.

Abstract

Purpose

The e-Government has a potential to entrench Good Governance in Pakistan. However, this technology could not be successfully developed and implemented in public sector – despite of efforts made by the Government. Consequently, public sector is suffering from bad Governance, which ultimately affects the Governance as well as e-Government ranking of Pakistan in the globe – as indicated by the UN surveys and other relevant indices. This paper aims to propose a novel techno-policy framework for its successful implementation by considering all relevant critical success factors (CSFs) and determining their relative importance from policymakers’ perspective. Further, it aims to excerpt the root causes of e-Government failure in Pakistan and to derive valuable policy implications for its success in the public sector.

Design/methodology/approach

The techno-policy framework was developed by identifying all the CSFs and assimilating them by deploying the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) approach. The survey instrument was designed to compare all the CSFs on the basis of AHP scale and to collect the socio-demographic data. An interview based survey of all the concerned stakeholders was conducted to know their perspective about the proposed framework and to determine their relative importance about all the CSFs. Finally, the empirical estimations were performed by using the Expert-Choice decision-making system.

Findings

The analysis of empirical results depicts that among CSFs’ main-categories – Governance is the most important; whereas, the Management and Resources are relatively more important; however, the Socio-Economics is relatively less important for the e-Government success in Pakistan. Further, among CSFs’ sub-categories – Political, Managerial, Legislative, Non-Technical, and Technical are relatively more important than Social, Economic, and Scope for the e-Government success in Pakistan. Lastly, among all CSFs – Political Stability, Managerial Strategy, ICT Policies, Funding, Portal Technology, Education & Skills, Cost, and Autonomy are the most important factors of their respective categories, and which can positively affect the e-Government success in Pakistan.

Research limitations/implications

This study fills the gap caused by paucity of literature in terms of empirical based techno-policy research in the e-Government domain – from implementation perspective. Further, it serves as a prototype for the prospective researchers, who aim to conduct policy oriented research toward e-Government development in their respective regions.

Practical implications

The key findings, policy implications & recommendations of this study are quite valuable and of practical significance for the government, policymakers, practitioners, researchers and all the concerned stakeholders and beneficiaries. Further, this study paves a way forward toward entrenching the Good Governance in Pakistan.

Originality/value

This study contributes in several ways. It highlights the significance of e-Government as a technology for attaining Good Governance in Pakistan. Further, it presents consolidated view of all the concerned stakeholders toward the successful implementation of all e-Government programs in Pakistan. Finally, it provides a guideline for the government agencies to formulate their e-Government policy and strategy as per the needs of all stakeholders in Pakistan.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the characteristics and performance of the meat supply chain by focusing on developing a model for measuring the meat supply chain's performance in the province of Isfahan, Iran.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a combination of literature review, Delphi approach and case study research, the paper examines part of the meat supply chain that consists of three industrial slaughterhouses, two cold rooms, three factories and more than 20 supermarkets and it then presents a framework to assess the performance of the industry in the region.

Findings

The methodology suggests indices for strategic and tactical levels in a meat industry as a case study. The proposed framework for the performance measurement of the chain was applied in strategic and tactical levels in which the ranking of indices are also among the achievements of this study. Results show that there are six main criteria required to measure the meat industry's performance.

Originality/value

Literature shows no record of an integrated measurement system for the entire food supply chain where indicators are combined into a performance function to assess the overall performance of the industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify and prioritize key performance indicators (KPIs) that can be used for stage-based performance assessment of build-operate-transfer (BOT) projects.

Design/methodology/approach

This research was conducted through focus group discussions and face-to-face questionnaires. Firstly, stage-level KPIs for BOT projects were identified by conducting a literature survey. The list of KPIs that can be used for measuring performance at different stages of a BOT project was finalized by conducting focus group discussions with 12 participants. The data related to the importance of identified KPIs were collected via a face-to-face questionnaire in which 30 high-level managers participated. Based on these data, KPIs were prioritized considering eight different stages of a BOT project by using Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS).

Findings

The research findings reveal that 63 stage-level KPIs can be used for measuring the performance of BOT projects at eight different stages, which are “feasibility study and preliminary plan,” “announcement and submission of application,” “evaluation and selection,” “negotiation and signing of concession agreement,” “design,” “construction,” “operation” and “transfer.” The most important KPIs were determined as “comprehensiveness of project technical feasibility,” “detailed tendering procedure,” “effectiveness of concessionaires' technical knowledge/capability evaluation,” “good relationships between government and concessionaire,” “technology transfer,” “effectiveness of quality control,” “effectiveness of facility management” and “effectiveness of hand-back management” for each stage. The findings can be used by companies to evaluate performance at each stage of a BOT project and, if necessary, take the necessary actions for performance improvement at the stage level.

Research limitations/implications

The main limitation is the size of the sample, which represents the perspectives of 30 Turkish high-level managers on KPIs in BOT projects. Besides, the selected method, namely, TOPSIS, does not provide quality measures related to the outputs; therefore, it is difficult to see the inconsistencies among the experts.

Practical implications

The study findings will help in devising appropriate performance evaluation practices for BOT projects to overcome the shortfalls of the existing practices and systems proposed in the literature and help in achieving the superior performance while developing infrastructure through the BOT route.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a process-based approach for measuring the performance of a BOT project considering eight different stages. It fills a research gap in the public–private partnership literature by focusing on stages rather than phases. The results can be used by practitioners to establish stage-level performance management systems for BOT projects.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a performance measurement system for a lean manufacturing environment, which assesses the multi-dimensional performance of lean manufacturing.

Design/methodology/approach

Following a case study approach, structured interviews were conducted to identify the parameters to measure the performance of a lean manufacturing apparel company. A model was developed with the analytical hierarchical process to assess the performance.

Findings

The proposed model consists of three levels: first level (overall manufacturing performance), second level (criteria that represent the stakeholders’ view of manufacturing performance) and third level (sub-criteria for the criteria which represent the areas affected by lean manufacturing). The model connects indicators that measure manufacturing performance with the areas required improvements, according to their relative importance to stakeholders.

Research limitations/implications

The interviewers’ perspectives were used to determine the importance of each manufacturing area for stakeholders. Key performance measures can vary from company to company.

Practical implications

Managers can use this model to identify important areas for manufacturing performance and the performance improvements driven by different types of lean practices. The results revealed that identifying stakeholders’ requirements was an important aspect of evaluating manufacturing performance.

Social implications

The model embeds a stakeholder approach in performance measurement, thereby providing a comprehensive model to assess performance.

Originality/value

This study applies the stakeholder view to identify the multi-dimensional nature of performance in a lean manufacturing setting. It also defines the key performance measures using lean practices.

Abstract

Purpose

In recent years, several performance indicators have been proposed in humanitarian supply chains (HSCs). Selecting the most relevant key performance indicators (KPIs) is challenging for some humanitarian organizations (HOs) because it involves a considerable amount of complexity and information overload which could lead to judgment biases in the decision-making process. Existing performance measurement studies lack critical analysis for prioritization of performance indicators. Since the process of KPIs selection and categorization is a complex, domain based and subjective process, a systematic guideline is needed. To address this gap, the purpose of this paper is to propose an integrated performance measurement scheme that can consolidate KPIs into an overall performance score based on the weighting of the performance indicators in HSCs.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collection was based on questionnaire surveys and direct interviews with practitioners from international HOs.

Findings

This paper proposes an integrated scheme based on balanced scorecard and analytic hierarchy process for performance evaluation of HOs.

Research limitations/implications

The respondents were limited to the humanitarian logistics experts from Malaysian-based international HOs.

Practical implications

The scheme enables the benchmarking of HOs’ performance that could be useful for decision makers in HSCs.

Originality/value

This paper provides the ranking and prioritization of KPIs in HSCs. The approach presented in this paper enables an effective and integrated performance measurement in HSCs.

Abstract

Purpose

Fashion brands, including fast and luxury segments, receive harsh criticism for engaging in unethical practices such as poor working conditions and environmental damage. As a result, fashion supply chains are pressured by stakeholders to publicly disclose internal supply chain performance information and to show a high level of supply chain transparency. This paper compares supply chain transparency in fast and luxury fashion in Europe.

Design/methodology/approach

By applying the maturity curve of fashion supply chain transparency, developed by Muratore and Marques (2022), the websites of 20 fast and 20 luxury fashion brands were analysed and classified as Opaque, Translucent or Transparent.

Findings

Despite its reputation, fast fashion demonstrated higher levels of transparency than luxury fashion. Luxury fashion only performed better in terms of the accessibility of sustainability information. Luxury brands avoided disclosing key transparency information, suggesting that they may be operating in contradiction to that which is inferred on their websites.

Originality/value

The findings of the study shed light on the sustainability credentials of the fashion industry, which has the potential to influence the purchase intentions of consumers, particularly millennials and Generation Z. Implications for practice are developed to highlight how fashion can improve its supply chain transparency.

Abstract

Purpose

Many developed countries have been using environmental taxes in their economic systems for many years. These taxes have a great impact on reducing the environmental damages of companies and individuals in society. But many developing countries have not used this tool effectively yet, and some countries face barriers to the effective implementation of environmental taxes that make it difficult and unsuccessful. To increase the effectiveness of the implementation of environmental taxes, governments must prioritize barriers and solutions to overcome its barriers. The identified knowledge gap of the pre-literature review is that an overview of the identification which completely considers all barriers and solutions of environmental taxes implementation does not exist. In response to this knowledge gap, this study aims to identify and prioritize the barriers and solutions of environmental taxes implementation.

Design/methodology/approach

Ranking the barriers and solutions is a complicated multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem that requires consideration of multiple feasible alternatives and conflicting tangible and intangible criteria. This study addresses the prioritization of solutions of Environmental Taxes implementation by proposing hybrid MCDM methods based on the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy-AHP) and the Fuzzy Technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution (Fuzzy-TOPSIS) under fuzzy environment. Fuzzy AHP is used to determine the weight of each barrier using a pairwise comparison, and fuzzy TOPSIS is used to finalize the ranking of solutions for more effective implementation of environmental taxes.

Findings

The results showed that environmental tax reform (ETR) (S3) has the highest value among the solutions for more effective implementation of environmental taxes. The result of the proposed model is validated by performing sensitivity analysis.

Research limitations/implications

This study could foster research on the discussion of these barriers and precise ways of implementing solutions to pay more attention to environmental taxes.

Practical implications

Ratings of solutions can be a guide and help governments to improve the implementation of environmental taxes or even develop this policy by being aware of the ranking of barriers and solutions.

Social implications

This paper creates a new perspective on the effective implementation of environmental taxes, which is closely related to improving environmental performance and increasing social welfare through improving the tax system.

Originality/value

For the first time, this study comprehensively identifies barriers and solutions for more effective implementation of environmental taxes and ranks them using two MCDM techniques.

Abstract

Purpose

The main aim of this study is to identify and prioritize the factors that influence the adoption of big data analytics (BDA) within the supply chain (SC) of the food industry in India.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is carried out in two distinct phases. In the first phase, barriers hindering BDA adoption in the Indian food industry are identified. Subsequently, the second phase rates/prioritizes these barriers using multicriteria methodologies such as the “analytical hierarchical process” (AHP) and the “fuzzy analytical hierarchical process” (FAHP). Fifteen barriers have been identified, collectively influencing the BDA adoption in the SC of the Indian food industry.

Findings

The findings suggest that the lack of data security, availability of skilled IT professionals, and uncertainty about return on investments (ROI) are the top three apprehensions of the consultants and managers regarding the BDA adoption in the Indian food industry SC.

Research limitations/implications

This research has identified several reasons for the adoption of bigdata analytics in the supply chain management of foods in India. This study has also highlighted that big data analytics applications need specific skillsets, and there is a shortage of critical skills in this industry. Therefore, the technical skills of the employees need to be enhanced by their organizations. Also, utilizing similar services offered by other external agencies could help organizations potentially save time and resources for their in-house teams with a faster turnaround.

Originality/value

The present study will provide vital information to companies regarding roadblocks in BDA adoption in the Indian food industry SC and motivate academicians to explore this area further.
