Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the study is to examine the willingness (or otherwise) of the Tunisian customers to adopt Islamic insurance services (takaful) and to determine the factors that influence their decisions.

Design/methodology/approach

Hundred questionnaires are randomly distributed to Tunisian customers, and the data are subsequently analysed using SEM as well as one sample t-test.

Findings

Overall, the results indicate that the Tunisian customers are willing to adopt Islamic insurance services. Furthermore, compatibility of these services is a determinant factor of their decision.

Originality/value

This is one of the few studies of customers' behaviour towards Islamic insurance services, and the first to be conducted in the context of Tunisia. Furthermore, the study extends theory of innovations diffusions to a different area of study and a different context, i.e. Islamic insurance and Tunisia, respectively.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to consider a contribution model of a general Islamic insurance industry which allowed the return of underwriting profit to the Islamic insurance participants. The objective is to create a justified and equitable means of computing contribution which maximises the expected ownership right of the Islamic insurance fund.

Design/methodology/approach

The accumulation of funds and claims paid were characterised in form of accumulation and decay function over a period of time. It provides necessary and sufficient conditions for their existence and uniqueness. Mathematical derivative procedures were adopted to derive the underwriting returns to be returned to the Islamic insurance participants. Lastly, this paper recommends the incorporation of underwriting returns’ variable into the traditional actuarial model and provides theoretical justification for the process.

Findings

Then, the derivation of underwriting returns through convolution of accumulated funds and claims paid views in the form of Laplace Transform led to a conjecture and proved. Thereafter, the proposed and adjusted model was arrived at.

Originality/value

This study, to the best knowledge of the researcher, is the first attempt in the quantification of Islamic insurance industry. Thus, the model is the first attempt of creating a justified way of calculating the Islamic insurance participants’ contributions.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to summarize the 20 years of literature published in takaful between 2000 and 2019 and propose some key areas as the directions for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study utilizes the systematic method of reviewing the literature. The SCOPUS database has been accessed, and 96 articles have been accounted for the analysis. The articles are grouped in their exclusive themes, such as consumer behavior, financial and nonfinancial performance, takaful models, human resources and governance.

Findings

Takaful research has widely covered marketing, finance, human resource, governance and stresses on its legal issues. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies have been employed. The research gaps have been classified based on the respective areas. Large share of current body of takaful literature consists of the studies related to the application of behavioural theories to examine the behavioural intention to take up takaful services.

Originality/value

The study enriches the literature of takaful by reviewing articles according to their respective themes, thereby contributing to the significant findings missing from existing literature surveys.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the determinants that influence the customer’s adoption towards the use of family takaful scheme by extending diffusion theory of innovation (DOI) in the context of Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

The published work allied to takaful studies and DOI was reviewed. Total of 282 respondents who are non-users of family takaful product were used for the purpose of primary data collection through convenience sampling.

Findings

The customer’s adoption towards Islamic insurance is determined not only by perceived relative advantage and perceived compatibility but also by awareness and religious belief. Perceived complexity, on the contrary, turns out not to be a predictor of family takaful adoption. Further, gender, age and education do not moderate the family takaful adoption by the customers.

Research limitations/implications

This research alike others have limitations in terms of sampling method used and only covers one city of Pakistan, namely, Karachi. Further studies need to be conducted in other cities as well with a large population.

Originality/value

Extended DOI is not used in the context of takaful in Pakistan as evident from scarce literature on the empirical studies. Therefore, the authors extend the DOI in the current work. Further, this paper will be a useful reference guide for the academicians, operators of takaful business and future researchers.
