To suggest a roadmap, based on a consumption function, to be used by instructors willing to teach the Lucas Critique subject.
Findings
Therefore, this paper proposes a lesson, which consists of three parts, to help undergraduates better understand the subject: (1) a grading exercise to bring the topic closer to students’ lives; (2) a Keynesian and an optimal consumption function, followed by an example based on an unemployment insurance policy; and (3) two optional topics consisting of extensions of the optimal consumption function and some empirical results related to the Lucas Critique.
Originality/value
The Lucas Critique influenced the evolution of research in macroeconomics, but it is not easily grasped in a classroom.

Abstract
The significance of event tourism in destination development underscores the importance of assessing the quality of events and their sustainability for competitiveness. This study investigates tourists’ perceptions of service quality and sustainability at the “Biggest São João in the World” event in 2023. Employing a quantitative approach, we conducted field research using questionnaires based on the Tourqual model, integrating sustainability indicators to address environmental impacts associated with such events. Data collection took place between June and July 2023, with a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 709 visitors. Descriptive statistics were applied to the 2022 survey data (397 respondents), on the 2023 data (709 respondents). Results reveal that the event’s diverse activities received the highest average rating at 4.03, while the use of sustainable transport during the event garnered the lowest rating at 1.93. This emphasizes the need for event organizers to implement continuous improvement plans, focusing particularly on areas with critical evaluations to enhance visitor satisfaction. This study’s originality and innovative approach contribute valuable insights for event managers and researchers and promote both local development and environmental awareness.

Abstract
Purpose
Manufacturing systems have undergone radical changes because of the implementation of physical and digital innovating technologies with high levels of connectivity, interoperability and autonomy. In this regard, the objective of this study was to investigate whether industrial engineers graduated in recent years in Brazil are prepared or not to work in companies and industries within the scope of Industry 4.0 technologies in a way that they positively contribute to the implementation and management of such technologies.
Design/methodology/approach
To achieve these objectives, a literature review and a survey on managers of the industrial sector acting in Brazil were carried out as the research strategies. The data collected were analyzed through a quantitative approach by means of the structural equations modeling method.
Findings
The hypothesis that the competencies of industrial engineers currently graduating in Brazil have a positive impact on the implementation and management of Industry 4.0 technologies has been confirmed. Predicting the evolution of production scenarios, understanding the interaction between organizations and their impacts on competitiveness and keeping abreast of technological advancements, organizing them and putting them to the service of business and societal demands were the competencies that obtained the highest factor loadings in the construct of industrial engineer competencies. In addition, cloud manufacturing, automation and robotization were the competencies that obtained the highest factor loadings in the industry 4.0 construct.
Originality/value
The analysis of skills development stands out as a source of competitive advantage for companies that intend to transition to a production system aligned with the principles of Industry 4.0, considering the training of professionals in an emerging economy context.

This article is a shortened version of a Master’s dissertation for the Liverpool University Centre for Archive Studies. It deals with issues of appraisal. Such issues involve fundamental concepts on what records are, why they are kept, and their life cycle. The answers to these questions were sought and found in the history of archives, and in the specialist literature. The theory and the methodology adopted were then applied to a case study of a recently established organisation in Lisbon, which has, at the core of its business, information in electronic format.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to presents a counterexample that points to an inconsistency generated by the first- and second-order approximation methods, FORM and SORM, respectively, procedures for elliptical problems.
Design/methodology/approach
The classical results of theory measure and functional analysis were used.
Findings
The FORM and SORM are known to find solutions in a Gaussian space. This procedure does not satisfy the conditions of the Lax–Milgram theorem and does not assure the existence and uniqueness of the solution.
Research limitations/implications
This paper alerts the engineering research community that uses these methods, initiating discussion and improvement of FORM and SORM procedures.
Practical implications
This paper puts in check the feasibility of using FORM and SORM in engineering problems.
Originality/value
From the moment they were introduced to the engineering and scientific communities, the FORM and SORM were taken as the bases for solving various problems found in the literature and indifferent documents scattered throughout the world over the past 50 years, for FORM, and 40 years, for SORM. Even though it was a very serious fault, at least for elliptical problems, pointed out in this work, it went unnoticed all those years by the research community. Therefore, the contribution of this paper is to present the engineering community that uses FORM and SORM in elliptical problems an unnoticed failure since the introduction of these methods.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide an insight into the techniques which are used and developed for adhesive bulk and joint specimens manufacturing.
Design/methodology/approach
After a short introduction, the paper discusses various techniques for adhesive bulk and joint specimens manufacturing and highlights their advantages and limitations. A number of examples in the form of different bulk and joint specimens of different types of adhesives are used to show the methods for determining the adhesive's mechanical properties needed for design in adhesive technology. In order to predict the adhesive joint strength, the stress distribution and a suitable failure criterion are essential. If a continuum mechanics approach is used, the availability of the stress‐strain curve of the adhesive is sufficient (the bulk tensile test or the TAST test is used). For fracture mechanics‐based design, mode I and mode II toughness is needed (DCB and ENF tests are used). Finally, single lap joints (SLJs) are used to assess the adhesive's performance in a joint.
Findings
Before an adhesive can be specified for an application, screening tests should be conducted in order to compare and evaluate the various adhesion parameters. Properties of adhesives can vary greatly and an appropriate selection is essential for a proper joint design. Thus, to determine the stresses and strains in adhesive joints in a variety of configurations, it is necessary to characterize the adhesive behaviour in order to know its mechanical properties. A great variety of test geometries and specimens are used to obtain adhesive properties. However, for manufacturing of adhesive bulk specimens and joints necessary for use in these tests, properly, moulds should be designed.
Originality/value
The paper summarises the main methods of preparing adhesive bulk and joint specimens and the test methods for determining the mechanical properties needed for design in adhesive technology. Emphasis is given to the preparation of specimens of suitable quality for mechanical property determination and the moulds designed for this purpose.

Abstract
After a technocratic period predominating in mobility literature and practice, the rhetoric of participation has been incorporated as a vital condition for the sustainable mobility agenda and, more recently, for achieving transport and mobility justice. Considering the social significance of mobility beyond simple movement and participation as a term that can accommodate a wide range of motivations and implications, this chapter explores the complex interplay of participation and mobility in the global south context. To this end, this study adopts the spaces for participation framework to investigate the multiple roles of participation in urban mobility. With a focus on the Brazilian context, this chapter uncovers the nature, dynamics, and reach of invited and claimed spaces for participation in mobility planning. Using Rio de Janeiro as the case study site, the chapter examines the invited spaces for participation enabled by the city's mobility plan and analyses whether marginalised populations engage with and/or create further spaces for participation. This was achieved through document analysis, online photo-elicitation interviews with residents of Favela Santa Marta as well as semi-structured interviews with municipal government professionals and representatives of non-government organisations involved in the development of Rio's mobility plan. The chapter discusses the interconnectedness or lack of, within invited and claimed spaces for participation and the multiplicity of meanings attributed to participation and mobility by different actors. The chapter closes with a reflection on what this means for participatory mobility planning in Brazil but which may apply to similar regions in the global south.

Abstract
Purpose
Managing the risks associated to world food production is an important challenge for governments. A range of factors, among them extreme weather events, has threatened food production in recent years. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the impact of extreme rainfall events on the food industry in Brazil, a prominent player in this industry.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors use the AR-GARCH-GPD hybrid methodology to identify whether extreme rainfall affects the stock price of food companies. To do so, the authors collected the daily closing price of the 16 food industry companies listed on the Brazilian stock exchange (B3), in January 2015.
Findings
The results indicate that these events have a significant impact on stock returns: on more than half of the days immediately following the heavy rain that fell between 28 February 2005 and 30 December 2014, returns were significantly low, leading to average daily losses of 1.97 per cent. These results point to the relevance of the need for instruments to hedge against weather risk, particularly in the food industry.
Originality/value
Given that extreme weather events have been occurring more and more frequently, financial literature has documented attempts at assessing the economic impacts of weather changes. There is little research, however, into assessing the impacts of these events at corporate level.

O gerenciamento de riscos associados à produção mundial de alimentos é um desafio importante para governantes. Diversos fatores, entre eles os eventos climáticos extremos, têm ameaçado a produção de alimentos nos últimos anos. Neste artigo nós analisamos o impacto de eventos de chuvas extremas na indústria de alimentos no Brasil, um dos maiores produtores mundiais.
Diseño/metodología/enfoque
Empregamos a metodologia híbrida AR-GARCH-GPD para verificar se chuvas extremas afetam o preço das ações das empresas de alimentos. Para isso, coletamos os preços de fechamento diário de 16 empresas do setor de alimentos listadas na Bolsa de Valores do Brasil [B]3, em janeiro de 2015.
Resultados
Os resultados sugerem que esses eventos exercem impacto significante sobre o retorno das ações: em mais da metade dos dias imediatamente posteriores à chuva extrema ocorrida entre 28/02/2005 e 30/12/2014, os retornos foram significantemente baixos, levando a perdas médias diárias próximas de 1,97%. Esses resultados apontam para a relevância da necessidade de instrumentos para proteção contra riscos climáticos, particularmente na indústria de alimentos.
Originalidad/valor
Tendo em vista que eventos climáticos extremos têm ocorrido com uma frequência cada vez maior, a literatura de finanças tem documentado tentativas de avaliar os impactos econômicos das mudanças climáticas. No entanto, nota-se a carência de pesquisas para avaliar os impactos desses eventos no nível das empresas.
