Abstract
Since November 1996, the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library at McGill University has established a new Subsidised UnMediated Ordering (SUMO) service for its users: the CISTI Source/SUMO service, a one‐stop shopping service where the patrons (faculty, staff and graduate students) can browse the CISTI Source Table of Contents database over the Web, order their articles and have them sent directly to their desktop by CISTI (Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information) without having to search McGill’s OPAC. A blocking mechanism is set in place so that currently owned journal subscription articles cannot be ordered. This service has proved to be a better alternative to the traditional acquisition of journals (both paper and online) and the interlibrary loan service. The CISTI Source/SUMO service has provided more pertinent journals, more quickly and more readily than before and in a much cheaper way than with any journal subscriptions. It is one of the best ways to cope with the rapid increase in journal prices.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to share opinions about where the future of Interlibrary Loan could go by discussing new methods of providing service to users. These methods include the expansion of arenas in which requests are searched, and several purchase‐on‐demand options.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors describe a framework in which resource sharing transactions are placed within four domains: free, buy, borrow, and rent. New methods of filling requests are discussed within this framework.
Findings
In this climate of constant change there are risks involved with libraries integrating a new company or service into a workflow. Factors such as reliability and stability, user expectations, cost, and license terms and provisions are important to consider. Also, the time it takes for staff to learn new tasks must also be evaluated. Staff should be encouraged to evaluate these factors, balancing them in a cost‐benefit framework and strategy, with a focus on ensuring library user satisfaction. Exploring how alternative sources can adapt to a request system, including billing infrastructure is fundamental to the future of resource sharing.
Originality/value
This article is useful for interlibrary loan staff who want to expand their current services or revise their borrowing/lending workflows.

Abstract
Recent trends and developments in remote document supply in the UK are examined, including a suggestion of what to call the activity itself. The impact of recent legislation covering copyright, legal deposit and electronic signatures on RDS is discussed as is the effect of electronic journals deals. Changes at BLDSC are noted, particularly the introduction of a secure electronic delivery service. But BLDSC will have to operate in a changing environment as envisaged in a new interlending scheme, BLDSC Plus. The central importance of BLDSC however is underlined by two important studies. The future prospects of a number of RDS systems are mentioned, but the reliance on an unreliable transport scheme for the delivery of returnables threatens to undo much of the good work. The conclusion is that RDS and related activities are in a transitional phase.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to describe the unique collaborative process initiated at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada, to develop a Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) through the United Nations University‐Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU‐IAS).
Design/methodology/approach
The innovative aspects of developing RCE Saskatchewan are elaborated as a function of regional characteristics and features. The founding members used a unique combination of facilitation methods and technology to establish a flexible governance model in support of ESD themes defined by participating members. The paper provides a critical analysis of the governance structure and educational approaches supported by RCE Saskatchewan.
Findings
The strength‐based model, in conjunction with open meetings and online discussion, has proven to be a highly effective method for establishing an organization in which members have diverse expertise and affiliation. The process used to develop the RCE was democratic, inclusive and transparent. Each member and member group contributes existing knowledge, with the common goal of advancing research on ESD as part of a regional and global network. The RCE was established in just over one year, a testament to the efficiency of the process. The web site provides a flexible host for the RCE virtual structure, facilitating communication within and between groups, documentation, announcements/postings, and the creation of searchable research databases with local and global public access. Flexibility of the governance model and partnerships with higher education institutions ensures long‐term sustainability. The use of non‐traditional educational modes (non‐formal and informal) has accelerated ESD awareness in the region, and their combination with formal education leads to programs that span different sectors.
Originality/value
This paper outlines the process developed by the founding members of RCE Saskatchewan to mobilise people, organizations and resources during the de novo establishment of an organization dedicated to promoting ESD. The virtual home and governance model, taken together, describe a completely unique structure that ensures long‐term sustainability for RCE Saskatchewan. Combining educational modes has so far proven successful in promoting ESD.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose that #MeToo is a social movement which has been more effective in changing norms around and increasing understanding about the prevalence and destructiveness of sexual harassment than decades of laws and organizational policies have been.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper uses communication, management and psychology literature on social media, public shaming and social movements to propose that #MeToo is a social movement that has changed perceptions of and knowledge about sexual harassment and assault. #MeToo provides voice to previously silenced targets and incentives for individuals to avoid perpetrating harassment and for organizations to deter sexual harassment at work and sanction it if it occurs.
Findings
The paper discusses individuals who have been publicly shamed and terminated for bigoted behavior outside of work, and organizational leaders who have been ousted after social media postings, as organizations attempt to distance themselves from the perpetrators of bigotry and sexual misconduct. Since #MeToo, some cities have passed laws prohibiting organizations from requiring sexual harassment targets to sign non-disclosure agreements.
Practical implications
Sexual harassment is associated with high individual costs and organizational costs, including costs of turnover, lost business and reputational damage. The #MeToo movement provides incentives for organizations to be more proactive and vigilant in their attempts to deter sexual harassment, and to appropriately address it when it occurs.
Social implications
Sexual harassment has widespread effects on women’s daily lives and careers. #MeToo gives voice to harassment targets, changes norms of silencing them, and increases awareness of harassment as unacceptable, harmful behavior.
Originality/value
The paper positions #MeToo as a social movement, with the ability to change the seemingly intractable problem of sexual harassment in ways laws have not.
