The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between union practices and two types of employees’ extra-role behaviors, namely, union citizenship behavior (UCB) and employee voice (EV), and the mechanisms that mediate this relationship.

Using matched data from 46 union leaders and 279 union members of 33 workplaces in China, this study utilized multilevel structural equation modeling to test the cross-level influences of union practices on employees’ extra-role behaviors and the mediation effects.

The results show that (1) union practices have a positive impact on employees’ UCB and EV, and (2) union practices increase UCB and EV through the improvement of industrial relations (IR) climate at the workplace level, as well as union commitment (UC) and union instrumentality (UI) at the individual level.

Although the authors collected data from multi-sources (i.e. union leaders and members), the cross-sectional data of this study limited the ability to make casual inferences.

This study contributes to the literature by providing theoretical explanation and empirical evidence to illustrate the role of union practices in increasing the extra-role behaviors of employees (i.e. UCB and EV). This is of particular importance in elaborating the effectiveness of enterprise unions under the recent reforms in China. In addition, the authors also unpacked the antecedents of extra-role behaviors in the union context by investigating how IR climate, UC and UI mediate the relationship between union practices and extra-role behaviors of employees.

This paper examines the role of the anchoring effect, including internal anchor formed by prior experience or external anchor produced by similar external practices of industrial competitors and investor networks in the decision-making of corporate social behaviors (CSBs).

This paper aims to investigate the effect of aluminum addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn alloy.

Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn-xAl (x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 Wt.%) alloys were prepared by the conventional gravity casting technology, and then microstructures, phase composition and mechanical properties were investigated by material characterization method, systematically.

Results show that the as-cast microstructure of Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn alloy mainly consists of a-Mg matrix as well as Mg₁₂REZn (18 R LPSO structure), and island-like Mg₃(RE, Zn) phase is distributed at the grain boundary. The addition of a small amount of Al (0.5 Wt.%) can decrease the content of island-like Mg₃(RE, Zn) phase, but significantly increase the content of long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure, resulting in the improvement of both tensile strength and elongation of Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn alloy. However, the addition of excessive Al will consume Re element and decrease the amount of LPSO structure, leading to the decrease of tensile properties. When the content of Al is 0.5 Wt.%, the tensile strength and elongation are 225 MPa and 9.0% of Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn alloy, which are 14% and 29% higher than that of Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn alloy, respectively.

Adding aluminum to Mg-8Gd-4Y-1Zn alloy strengthens its mechanical properties. And the effect of Al content on the alloy strengthening. The formation mechanism of LPSO structure with different aluminum content was revealed.
