Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore how intra-industry entrepreneurial experience and failure entrepreneurial experience affect novelty-centered business model design in a new venture. Moreover, the authors also consider whether the contingent value of entrepreneurial experience may differ according to competitive intensity.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey via questionnaire was conducted with 290 entrepreneurs and top managers from Chinese new ventures that provided the research data. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to test the proposed theoretical hypotheses.

Findings

The empirical results indicate that intra-industry entrepreneurial experience has an inverted U-shaped effect on novelty-centered business model design, whereas failure entrepreneurial experience has a negative effect on novelty-centered business model design. Furthermore, the authors also find that competitive intensity weakens the inverted U-shaped effect of intra-industry entrepreneurial experience on novelty-centered business model design.

Originality/value

This study offers new insights into the effects of intra-industry entrepreneurial experience and failure entrepreneurial experience on novelty-centered business model design and provides useful suggestions for new ventures to promote business model design.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper with pork as a case is to analyze Chinese consumer preference and demand for traceable food attributes, in order to provide a useful reference for Chinese Government in developing the safe food market and preventing food safety risks.

Design/methodology/approach

This research surveyed 1,380 consumers in seven pilot cities that designated by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce for the construction of a meat and vegetable circulation traceability system. A choice-based conjoint analysis and multinomial logit model were used to study consumer preferences and demand for traceable pork attributes.

Findings

The results demonstrated that certification of traceable information was the most important characteristic, followed by appearance and traceable information. Significant heterogeneity was obtained in consumer preferences for the attributes of traceable pork. Also, consumers’ preferences for traceable attributes were memorably influenced by age, education level, and income level.

Social implications

Based on these results, the government should encourage and support the production of traceable food with different certification types and different traceability levels. Meanwhile, the development of food traceability systems should be combined with a quality certification labeling system.

Originality/value

This study extends the applicability of the setting of traceable food attributes and levels in China, and it will improve Chinese food traceability systems through multilateral cooperation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to put forward a multi-stage information aggregation method based on grey inspiriting control lines to evaluate the objects dynamically and comprehensively.

Design/methodology/approach

According to the evaluation value of the objects, the positive and negative incentive lines were set up and the predicted values were solved based on the grey GM(1, 1) model, so the value with expected information could be evaluated. In the evaluation, the part above the positive incentive line should be “rewarded” and that below the negative incentive line should be “punished” appropriately. Thereby the double incentive effects of “the current development situation and future development trend” to objects could be implemented on the basis of control.

Findings

This method can primarily describe the decision maker's expectancy of the development of evaluation objects and make the evaluation results have better practical application value.

Research limitations/implications

Many comprehensive evaluations were always based on the past information. However, the future development trend of the evaluated object is also very important. This study can be used in the evaluation for future application and development.

Originality/value

The paper succeeds in providing not only a method of multi-phase information aggregation with expectancy information, but also a simple and convenient method solving nonlinear inspiring lines objectively.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine how the interactions between the entrepreneur’s technical and market knowledge and the intra- and extra-industry ties affect resources acquisition.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors made a questionnaire from a sample of 300 high-technology companies located in the incubator in Xi’an, of which 165 were usable, and the final response rate was 55 per cent, the authors used optimal scaling regression analyses to analyze the data and test the hypotheses.

Findings

There is a positive relationship between the entrepreneurs’ knowledge and the resources acquisition. The effects of the technical knowledge and the market knowledge are contingent on the intra-industry ties and the extra-industry ties in different ways. In particular, an entrepreneur with technical knowledge has an easier access to required resources from the intra-industry ties than extra-industry ties. In contrast, an entrepreneur with market knowledge can obtain more easily the needed resources from the extra-industry ties than the intra-industry ties.

Originality/value

The paper conducted an empirical test of how the interactions between the entrepreneurs’ knowledge and industry ties affect the resources acquisition in the context of China’s emerging economy, which has not been studied in the current literature. This paper provides implications for entrepreneurs with technical and market knowledge in finding the right way to obtain needed resources through their industry ties.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to propose a new coning correction algorithm, based on the singular perturbation technique, for the attitude update computation with non‐ideal angular rate information.

Design/methodology/approach

Unlike conventional coning correction algorithms, the new method uses angular rate two‐time scale model to construct the coning correction term of attitude update. In order to achieve balanced real/pseudo coning correction performance, the selection guidelines of the new algorithm parameters are established.

Findings

Performance of the new algorithm is evaluated by comparison with the conventional algorithm in no ideal sensors undergoing stochastic coning environments. The accuracy of attitude update can be improved effectively with reduced computational workload by using this new coning algorithm as compared with conventional ones.

Practical implications

The proposed coning correction algorithm can be implemented with angular rate sensors in UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) and other aircrafts attitude estimation for navigation and control applications.

Originality/value

Singular perturbation is an effective method for structuring coning correction algorithm with filtered angular rate outputs in stochastic coning environments. The improved coning correction algorithm based on singular perturbations reduces the real and pseudo coning effects effectively as compared with conventional ones. It is proved to be valid for improvement of accuracy with reduced computations of the attitude update.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper attempts to explore the interrelationships between the split-share structure reform and privatization processes in light of the interplay between the listing announcements of the non-traditional shares of the Chinese firms within the steel industry and market reaction to these listed shares, as well as to analyze the value gained by the firms due to the privatization processes.

Methodology/approach

The paper examines market reaction to the listing announcements of non-traditional shares as traditional shares by employing event-study methodology. To determine the success of privatization process and value creation to the firm, the paper utilizes multivariate analysis.

Findings

The exogenous factors emphasized in a topographical order, explicitly profitability, efficiency, and leverage, are related to the privatization processes and split-share structure reform that impact the market. The study supports that market reacts positively to the listing announcements of non-traditional shares. Being listed improves value to the firm.

Research limitations/implications

The limitation of this study is the lack of data on country, industry, and firm factors; and this study merely relates to one specific industry and one country.

Originality/value

The paper fills a gap in the literature by articulating the impact of privatization and split-share structure reform on both market reaction and firm value. It focuses on the impact of a dynamic process rather than the impact of a static constituent on market reaction and firm value, as the previous studies have been concentrating on. The research shows that there is an accelerated privatization process of state-owned firms in Chinese steel industry and their integration in capital markets.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper provides an overview of material helpful in placing the subsequent papers in context, as well as a summary of the research contributions made by the individual papers themselves.

Methodology/approach

We begin with a timeline of China’s Economic Reform, including both major events that permitted the opening and expansion of the nation’s economy, and important milestones of the historical movement. We then consider the impact of philosophy and culture (particularly, Confucianism and socialism) on China’s society and government, which leads naturally to certain observations regarding the political-economic model in which state-owned enterprises play a central role. In the final section, we briefly summarize the contents of the remaining papers.

Abstract

Purpose

Electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) and electrical resistance tomography (ERT) are promising techniques for multiphase flow measurement due to their high speed, low cost, non-invasive and visualization features. There are two major difficulties in image reconstruction for ECT and ERT: the “soft-field”effect, and the ill-posedness of the inverse problem, which includes two problems: under-determined problem and the solution is not stable, i.e. is very sensitive to measurement errors and noise. This paper aims to summarize and evaluate various reconstruction algorithms which have been studied and developed in the word for many years and to provide reference for further research and application.

Design/methodology/approach

In the past 10 years, various image reconstruction algorithms have been developed to deal with these problems, including in the field of industrial multi-phase flow measurement and biological medical diagnosis.

Findings

This paper reviews existing image reconstruction algorithms and the new algorithms proposed by the authors for electrical capacitance tomography and electrical resistance tomography in multi-phase flow measurement and biological medical diagnosis.

Originality/value

The authors systematically summarize and evaluate various reconstruction algorithms which have been studied and developed in the word for many years and to provide valuable reference for practical applications.

Abstract

Purpose

Currently, China is the largest coal producer and consumer in the world. Underground mining is the main practice. In the process of deep mining, large amounts of low-temperature waste heat are available such as in the mine return air (MRA), mine water (MW), bathing waste water (BWW), etc. Without recycling, the low-temperature waste heat is discharged directly into the atmosphere or into the drainage system. The temperature range of the MRA is about 15-25°C, the relative humidity (RH) of the MRA is above 90 per cent, the temperature range of MW is about 18-20°C and the temperature of the BWW is about 30°C. All of the above parameters are relatively stable throughout the year, and thus MRA, MW and BWW are proper low-temperature heat sources for water source heat pump (WSHP) systems. The study aims to introduce the schemes for recycling the different waste heat sources and the relevant key equipment and technology of each waste heat recycle system; analyze the heat recovery performances of the MRA heat recovery technology; and compare the economies between the MRA heat recovery system and the traditional system.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the WSHP system, heat and mass transfer efficiencies were calculated and analyzed, the outlet air velocity diffusion of the heat and mass transfer units and the parameters including air flow rate, the MRA’s dry bulb temperatures and wet bulb temperatures at inlet and outlet of MRA heat exchanger were tested. Then, it was assessed whether this system can be applied to an actual construction. An actual reconstructive project of MRA heat recovery system is taken as an example, where the cost-saving effects of heat recovery of mine waste heat sources system are analyzed.

Findings

Analysis of field test reveals that when heat transfer is stable, heat transfer capacity can be achieved: 957.6 kW in summer, 681 kW in winter and a large amount of heat was recycled. In an economic analysis, by comparing initial investment and 10 years’ operation cost with the traditional boiler and central air conditioning system, the results show that although the MRA system’s initial investment is high, this system can save CNY 6.26m in 10 years.

Originality/value

MRA has a large amount of air volume and temperature that is constant throughout the year, and hence is a good low-temperature heat source for the WSHP system. It can replace boiler heating in winter and central air conditioning refrigeration in summer. The study reveals that this technology is feasible, and has good prospects for development.
