Abstract

Purpose

As the market competition becomes increasingly intensive and the profit from traditional voice services margins gradually decline, 3G telecom operators must provide various value‐added services to enhance the ARPU (average revenue per user). The purpose of this paper is to recognize the factors infecting the adoption of 3G value‐added services.

Design/methodology/approach

The TAM (technology acceptance model) was used as the foundation to further understand consumer's behavioral intention to use 3G value‐added services. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to develop a conceptual model of customer adoption and nine important factors were proposed. The authors conducted a questionnaire investigation, using a large sample, in the Chinese 3G value‐added service market. SPSS and AMOS were applied to analyze the survey data.

Findings

The empirical findings are: security and social influence are two of the most important factors in 3G market; 3G value‐added services must be perceived as enjoyment and useful; using context should be friendly and compatible; and in a whole view, the influence from gender, ease of use and need for unique to adoption intention is not significant, but to separate as two models, the difference is huge – the female group considers more about price and usefulness, while the male group thinks about enjoyment and compatibility.

Practical implications

The sample of this study is limited at the range of empirical data; the development of 3G technology has not yet been perfected in China and this study fails to include all of the 3G value‐added services, some of which are still in the exploratory phase of development. At the same time, the cities in this study cannot be said to represent the present stage of the whole of China.

Originality/value

The paper develops a conceptual structural equation model on the area of 3G value‐added services in China. The findings in the paper would help 3G providers to improve their services.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to address the urgent need for transformation and upgrading in the construction industry amid the accelerating industrialization process. The focus is on understanding how value-added for construction enterprises can be achieved through servitization.

Design/methodology/approach

Grounded in the perspective of added value of construction enterprises, this paper uses a multicase analysis method, selecting four internationally renowned construction enterprises as the research subjects. The analysis investigates how these case study enterprises transition toward servitization and explores the trends in servitization in construction.

Findings

The research results indicate that servitization manifests in two aspects: contractor transition to servitization, and the shift of the construction industry toward integrated delivery. Furthermore, servitization in construction can achieve value-adding through three pathways: increasing product value, creating market demand and providing customized services.

Originality/value

This study contributes by providing insights into the manifestations of servitization and pathways for value-added. It provides a reference for the overall direction and basic strategy of servitization in construction.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on the conservation of resources (COR) theory, this study aims to examine the influence of abusive supervision on hospitality employees’ helping behaviors, especially, the joint moderating effects of proactive personality and ability to manage resources (i.e. RMA) in the hypothesized relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a two-phase design, this study gathered data from 353 employees of ten hotels located in China. To test the hypotheses, the study conducted a series of hierarchical multiple regression analyses.

Findings

Findings demonstrated that abusive supervision was negatively related to hotel employees’ helping behaviors. Moreover, both proactive personality and RMA jointly moderated the abusive supervision–helping behavior relationship. Specifically, when both proactive personality and RMA had high degrees, the abusive supervision–employees’ helping behaviors linkage was weakest. Conversely, the strongest impact of abusive supervision on employees’ helping behaviors occurred when both proactive personality and RMA were low.

Practical implications

Hotel managers should reduce mistreatment and cultivate employees’ both proactive personality and RMA, to inhibit the decline of helping behavior resulting from abusive supervision.

Originality/value

First, the current study provides a novel theoretical underpinning of the COR theory to explain the abusive supervision–helping behavior association, particularly in the hospitality context. Second, this study contributes to the boundary effects of abusive supervision on helping behavior by investigating the moderating roles of individual differences (i.e. proactive personality and RMA).

Abstract

Purpose

Servitization and research and development (R&D) innovation provide new developmental opportunities for transformation in the construction industry. This study aims to explore the transformative impact of servitization and R&D innovation on the value added of the construction industry, offering new insights into industry transformation and growth.

Design/methodology/approach

This study utilizes panel data from Chinese listed construction companies from 2014 to 2022 to empirically investigate the relationship among servitization, R&D innovation and value added in the construction industry. The data analysis is augmented by incorporating text mining techniques to rigorously investigate the interplay among servitization, R&D innovation and the value added within the construction industry.

Findings

The research findings indicate that the impact of servitization on value added follows a positive U-shaped relationship, while the influence of R&D innovation on value added exhibits an inverted U-shaped relationship. Additionally, innovation investment plays a negative moderating role in the relationship between servitization and value added.

Originality/value

This study reveals a fresh perspective on how construction companies can leverage servitization as a strategic pathway for transformation and competitive advantage. The research also lays a theoretical groundwork for future innovation investment strategies in the construction industry, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to innovation investments to maximize value added.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on social exchange theory and research on proactive personality, this study aims to explore the relationship between abusive supervision and unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB), taking proactive personality as a boundary condition.

Design/methodology/approach

This study conducted a two-wave questionnaire survey and used data from 353 Chinese employees of a diversified company to test the research hypotheses.

Findings

The relationship between abusive supervision and UPB varied with proactive personality. Specifically, abusive supervision had an inverted U-shaped effect on UPB when proactive personality was high, while abusive supervision was negatively related to UPB when proactive personality was low.

Research limitations/implications

More research are encouraged to replicate our study in different cultural contexts. Besides, future research can gather data from dyads (e.g. supervisor–subordinate dyad and coworker–subordinate dyad) so as to increase the objectivity and validity of the data.

Practical implications

Managers should reduce abusive supervision and elevate proactive employees' moral awareness.

Social implications

This study hopes that the authors’ findings will help practitioners to devote greater attention to managing proactive personality, abusive supervision and UPB in the organization.

Originality/value

First, this study enriches the abusive supervision literature by identifying UPB as a consequence of abusive supervision. Second, this study provides a better understanding of the coping tactics used to combat abusive supervision. Third, this study uncovers a dark side of proactive personality by verifying the moderating effect of proactive personality.

Abstract

Purpose

Fault diagnosis methods based on blind source separation (BSS) for rolling element bearings are necessary tools to prevent any unexpected accidents. In the field application, the actual signal acquisition is usually hindered by certain restrictions, such as the limited number of signal channels. The purpose of this study is to fulfill the weakness of the existed BSS method.

Design/methodology/approach

To deal with this problem, this paper proposes a blind source extraction (BSE) method for bearing fault diagnosis based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and temporal correlation. First, a single-channel undetermined BSS problem is transformed into a determined BSS problem using the EMD algorithm. Then, the desired fault signal is extracted from selected intrinsic mode functions with a multi-shift correlation method.

Findings

Experimental results prove the extracted fault signal can be easily identified through the envelope spectrum. The application of the proposed method is validated using simulated signals and rolling element bearing signals of the train axle.

Originality/value

This paper proposes an underdetermined BSE method based on the EMD and the temporal correlation method for rolling element bearings. A simulated signal and two bearing fault signal from the train rolling element bearings show that the proposed method can well extract the bearing fault signal. Note that the proposed method can extract the periodic fault signal for bearing fault diagnosis. Thus, it should be helpful in the diagnosis of other rotating machinery, such as gears or blades.

Abstract

Purpose

Institutional work mainly focused on the purposive action of rational actors. However, the evolution of institution is not only affected by deliberate actions but also by emergent strategic patterns. Through a qualitative study of emergent aggression strategy in a Chinese leading private firm, Gome, this paper aims to explore the role of emergent strategy in institutional work. The paper finds that emergent strategy influences the normative and cognitive institution unconsciously and offers actors specialized identities. The present analysis also suggests that the emergent strategy-based institution needs a supporting and repairing system for maintenance.

Design/methodology/approach

This study primarily considers the micro aspect of emergent strategy and institutional work. It calls for detailed observation, interviews and archival materials which can make up a comprehensive in-depth picture. The authors remain skeptical to what people claim and try to get multiple sources of information. Also, the topic the authors deal with is relatively under-researched, and it is valuable to get explorative richness. Therefore, an interpretive qualitative approach is adopted to investigate actual events from “the native’s” perspective.

Findings

We found that an emergent strategy, which is realized but without previous plans, can also construct a “proto-type institution”, only in an unconscious way. The precondition is that the strategic resources of the focal firm are abundant enough for it to set the criteria of inter-organizational sanctions and rewards. In addition, the authors believe that supportive system and repairing system underpin the maintenance of established institutions.

Originality/value

First, by combining the research on emergent strategy to institutional work, the authors extend the scope of the latter by adding unconscious institutional work. Even if the agent-based view is adopted, rational actors can still influence the institution. Second, the authors explored the institutional outcome of emergent strategy, which fills the paucity of strategy process research. Third, aggression, the specific emergent strategy in this paper, can be turned into “plans for the future”. Its prevalence in the emerging market will attract more academic attention.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose an enhanced densely dehazing network to suit railway scenes’ features and improve the visual quality degraded by haze and fog.

Design/methodology/approach

It is an end-to-end network based on DenseNet. The authors design enhanced dense blocks and fuse them in a pyramid pooling module for visual data’s local and global features. Multiple ablation studies have been conducted to show the effects of each module proposed in this paper.

Findings

The authors have compared dehazed results on real hazy images and railway hazy images of state-of-the-art dehazing networks with the dehazed results in data quality. Finally, an object-detection test is taken to judge the edge information preservation after haze removal. All results demonstrate that the proposed dehazing network performs better under railway scenes in detail.

Originality/value

This study provides a new method for image enhancing in the railway monitoring system.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of indigenous technological capability and interpersonal trust on product innovation through supply-chain learning under a dynamic environment.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed model is tested with a sample of 300 manufacturers in China.

Findings

The results show that the learning from customers partially mediates the relationship between indigenous technological capability and product innovation, as well as between interpersonal trust with customers and product innovation. In addition, the influence of indigenous technological capability on learning from customers is weakened under a dynamic environment as well as the influence of learning from customers on product innovation.

Originality/value

This study illustrates the comparative roles of indigenous technological capability and interpersonal trust in learning customer knowledge and promoting innovation. It also enriches the innovation research by understanding the learning roles of indigenous technological capability and interpersonal trust under a dynamic environment.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on conservation of resources (COR) theory, this study aims to explore the influencing mechanism of exploitative leadership on knowledge hiding. Specifically, this study focuses on the mediating role of psychological distress and the moderating role of hostile attribution bias in affecting the mediation.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 324 employees of a high-technology company in China by a three-wave questionnaire survey. Hierarchical regression analysis and bootstrapping approach were employed to test hypotheses.

Findings

This study found that exploitative leadership was positively related to knowledge hiding and that psychological distress mediated this relationship. Moreover, the results revealed that the positive relationship between exploitative leadership and psychological distress and the indirect effect of exploitative leadership on knowledge hiding via psychological distress were stronger when hostile attribution was high rather than low.

Practical implications

The findings of this study offer guidance for managers to better undermine the negative effects of exploitative leadership.

Originality/value

First, this study extends the literature on exploitative leadership by verifying the positive effect of exploitative leadership on knowledge hiding. Second, this study enriches one’s understanding of the “black box” underlying the link between exploitative leadership and its consequences by demonstrating the mediating role of psychological distress. Third, by verifying the moderating role of hostile attribution bias, this study provides insights into the boundary conditions of the impact of exploitative leadership.
