Abstract
Purpose
Stochastic computing which is an alternative method of the binary calculation has key merits such as fault-tolerant capability and low hardware cost. However, the hardware response time of it is required to be very fast due to its bit-wise calculation mode. While the complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) components are difficult to meet the requirements aforementioned. For this, the stochastic computing implementation scheme based on the memristive system is proposed to reduce the response time. The purpose of this paper is to provide the implementation scheme based memristive system for the stochastic computing.
Design/methodology/approach
The hardware structure of material logic based on the memristive system is realized according to the advantages of the memristor. After that, the scheme of NOT logic, AND logic and multiplexer are designed, which are the basic units of stochastic computing. Furthermore, a stochastic computing system based on memristive combinational logic is structured and its validity is verified successfully by operating a case.
Findings
The numbers of the elements of the proposed stochastic computing system are less than the conventional stochastic computing based on CMOS circuits.
Originality/value
The paper proposed a novel implementation scheme for stochastic computing based on the memristive systems, which are different from the conventional stochastic computing based on CMOS circuits.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to improve the performance of E-nose in the detection of wound infection. Feature extraction and selection methods have a strong impact on the performance of pattern classification of electronic nose (E-nose). A new hybrid feature matrix construction method and multi-objective binary quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization (BQPSO) have been proposed for feature extraction and selection of sensor array.
Design/methodology/approach
A hybrid feature matrix constructed by maximum value and wavelet coefficients is proposed to realize feature extraction. Multi-objective BQPSO whose fitness function contains classification accuracy and a number of selected sensors is used for feature selection. Quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization (QPSO) is used for synchronization optimization of selected features and parameter of classifier. Radical basis function (RBF) network is used for classification.
Findings
E-nose obtains the highest classification accuracy when the maximum value and db 5 wavelet coefficients are extracted as the hybrid features and only six sensors are selected for classification. All results make it clear that the proposed method is an ideal feature extraction and selection method of E-nose in the detection of wound infection.
Originality/value
The innovative concept improves the performance of E-nose in wound monitoring, and is beneficial for realizing the clinical application of E-nose.

This paper aims to investigate the influence of stearate types on the thickening ability, dropping point and fiber structure of greases.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the influence of stearate types on the thickening ability, dropping point and fiber structure of greases.
Design/methodology/approach
Several greases were prepared from polyolefins and various stearates. The melting point of the stearates and the dropping point of the resultant greases were measured, and the intermolecular binding energies of the thickener and the radial distribution function of the metal–oxygen in the thickener were determined with the aid of molecular simulation. The microstructures of the greases were also analyzed via scanning electron microscopy.
Findings
A higher stearate binding energy was found to correlate to a higher dropping point of the resultant greases. The thickening ability of the stearate is related to the group and period of the constituent metal ion. Within a group, greater atomic numbers of the metal were correlated to lower thickening ability. In a period, as the atomic number of the metal increased, the thickening ability was enhanced. The radial distribution functions of metal and oxygen can explain the aggregation of the stearate thickeners in the grease.
Originality/value
This work compared the thickening capacity of several stearates. Guidelines for preparing stearates to tailor the resultant grease are presented.

Abstract
Purpose
This study mainly focused on the long-term effect of different risk exposure levels and prior anti-epidemic experience of healthcare workers in mitigating COVID-19 on their work stress in the post-COVID era.
Design/methodology/approach
The study sample included 359 physicians, 619 nurses, 229 technicians and 212 administrators, for a total of 1,419 healthcare workers working in the Lanzhou area during the investigation. Data were analyzed by multivariate regression models.
Findings
Our findings indicated that the interaction between pandemic effect mitigation experience and high-risk exposure significantly affected healthcare workers in the post-COVID era by increasing their work stress (p < 0.001) and reducing their rest time (p < 0.001). Healthcare workers may have experienced worse outcomes in the long term if they had higher levels of risk exposure and more experience in fighting epidemics. Furthermore, poor mental health (p < 0.001) and prior experience with SARS (p < 0.001) further amplified these adverse effects. However, surprisingly, we did not observe any effect of prior anti-epidemic experience or high-risk exposure on the mental health of healthcare workers in the post-COVID era (p > 0.1).
Research limitations/implications
The adverse impact of COVID-19 may have left long-lasting effects on Health professionals (HPs), particularly those with high Risk exposure (RE) and more mitigation experience. Poor Mental health (MH) and previous experience in mitigating previous similar outbreaks (such as SARS) are risk factors that should be considered. Support programs must be designed and promoted to help HPs respond and improve their performance.
Originality/value
Our study presents compelling evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic will have long-term detrimental effects on the work stress of healthcare workers.

Abstract
Purpose
Over the past few years, the internet has expanded rapidly, and it has been considered a systematic way that consumers use to retrieve health-related information. However, the existing literature does not provide an articulated view of online health information-seeking behaviour through an in-depth understanding of users’ searching-related behaviour. The objectives of this study are to identify the factors affecting consumers’ health-related internet use and recognise the relationships between those specified and health-related internet use. Finally, the recommendations are made based on the findings.
Design/methodology/approach
An amalgamated model of technology acceptance model and health belief model was used to hypothesise health-related internet use behaviour, which is then tested using a cross-sectional survey of 287 Sri Lankan managerial-level employees. The covariance-based structural equation modelling with AMOS was used to check the study hypotheses.
Findings
Findings of this study depict five factors contributing to consumers’ health-related internet use as follows: perceived health risk towards chronic diseases consisting of perceived susceptibility and perceived severity; health consciousness; perceived usefulness of the internet; perceived ease of internet use; and attitude towards health-related internet use. As theorised, the internet’s perceived usefulness was positively and significantly related to consumers’ use of health-related internet and attitude towards health-related internet use. But as hypothesised, perceived ease of internet use did not directly affect consumers’ use of health-related internet. Further, findings reveal that health-related internet use is estimated by perceived health risk than health consciousness.
Originality/value
Findings reveal that Sri Lankan managerial-level employees have a reactive health behaviour driven by the perceived health risk and the desire to seek online health information.

The purpose of this paper is to present a computational fluid dynamic simulation for the investigation of the particles segregation phenomenon in the gas–solid fluidized beds.
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present a computational fluid dynamic simulation for the investigation of the particles segregation phenomenon in the gas–solid fluidized beds.
Design/methodology/approach
These particles have the same size and different densities. The k–ε model and multiphase particle-in-cell method have been utilized for modeling the turbulent fluid flow and solid particles behaviors, respectively. The coupled equations of the velocity and pressure have been solved by using a combination of SIMPLE and PISO algorithms. After validating the simulation, different mixing indices, with different calculation bases, have been investigated, and it has been found that the Lacey mixing index, which was defined based on statistical concepts, is suitable to investigate the segregation/mixing phenomena of this bed in different conditions. Finally, the effects of parameters such as velocity, particle density ratio, jetsam concentration, and initial arrangement on the segregation/mixing behaviors of the bed have been studied.
Findings
The results show that the increase in the superficial gas velocity decreases the mixing index to a minimum value and then increases this index in the beds with mixed initial condition, unlike the beds with separated initial condition. Moreover, an increase in the particle density ratio increases the minimum fluidization velocity of the bed, and also the amount of segregation, and increase in the jetsam concentration increases the value of the mixing index.
Originality/value
A computational fluid dynamics simulation has been presented for the particles segregation phenomenon in the gas–solid fluidized beds.
