Abstract

Purpose

This paper delves into the discourse surrounding central bank digital currencies (CBDC) from the perspective of citizens’ views expressed on Twitter, on the potential implementation of a digital euro. The paper sheds light on citizens’ sentiments regarding CBDCs in relation to the euro and the euro area.

Design/methodology/approach

Using “TextBlob” sentiment analysis, this paper analyzes 4,462 Tweets containing the keywords “cbdc” and “euro” posted between September 14, 2018, and June 19, 2023. It explores citizens’ perceptions and concerns, as well as the general sentiment conveyed by the Tweets, through sentiment analysis and word-cloud generation. Text analysis and the “KMeans algorithm” are used to identify similar groups of Tweets. Statistical analysis of Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) keyword values in each cluster provides information about the relative distribution of words within clusters. In a further step, sentiment analysis is performed on each cluster by rating it positively, neutrally or negatively to identify the relevant dominant themes.

Findings

This paper reveals the evolving nature of CBDC-related discourse on Twitter over a four-year period, demonstrating a slight overall trend of positive sentiments. The distribution includes Tweets with a pronounced negative and positive sentiment, highlighting the need for clear and citizen-friendly communication through social media channels (such as Twitter or LinkedIn) in addition to the traditional channels used by official institutions.

Research limitations/implications

The extraction of Tweets was limited to English; bilingual Tweets containing English words were also considered. Future research could be expanded to include Tweets in additional languages and compare them to English Tweets. Geographical data on the origin of the Tweets were not considered due to potential inaccuracies resulting from the use of VPNs.

Practical implications

The findings highlight citizens’ views, expectations and perceptions on the digital euro as a type of CBDC, suggesting ways in which the European Central Bank (ECB) can ensure customer satisfaction with its successful implementation.

Originality/value

The originality of the article revolves around the focus on the digital euro and on analyzing European citizens’ opinions regarding its implementation. In contrast to previous literature, this research discusses critically the pros and cons and possible design aspects of the new digital euro, by taking a citizen-centric approach and focusing solely on one type of currency. Technological advances and the digital era have left their mark on how society communicates and behaves. The implementation of CBDCs will affect the digital society. Therefore, the paper sparks a debate about European citizens’ sentiments toward adopting the digital euro, as a new digital currency, which will impact their lifestyle and financial decisions.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to highlight how an applied learning framework or “community of practice” (CoP) combined with a traditional theoretical course of study enables the identification of teaching-learning processes which facilitate knowledge transfer from practitioners to graduate information technology (IT) students for quicker integration in the labour market.

Design/methodology/approach

CoPs are identified based on cluster analysis according to Kolb’s Learning Style Inventory (1984), with data obtained through a survey. Empirical research is applied to the CoP developed within a non-formal learning framework, principal new actors being IT specialists linked to graduate IT students and teachers on a traditional university course. Graduate IT students can gain knowledge of the ideal employee and the social and emotional skills needed to integrate with the IT labour market.

Findings

The K-Means algorithm helps to identify clusters of graduate IT students displaying necessary knowledge acceptance behaviour to convert them into specialists. The results of the cluster analysis show different learning styles of the labour force, providing an overview of candidate selection methods and the knowledge, skills and attitudes expected by users.

Research limitations/implications

Although the research adds value to the existing literature on learning styles and the knowledge and core skills needed by IT specialists, it was limited to an emerging market.

Originality/value

The study provides a preliminary overview of graduate IT students’ attitudes from an emerging market to the re-engineering of academic learning contexts to facilitate professional knowledge transfer, converting them into IT practitioners and integrating them in the labour market of an emerging economy.

Abstract

Purpose

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought tremendous changes in society. Universities were among the few organisations with some previous knowledge of online education, being able to rapidly adapt by transferring already known best practices to the new context. As teaching moved to online, students encountered less sustainable implementation by their universities. This allowed the development of previously planned sustainable strategies so that when face-to-face teaching resumed, universities could be even more sustainable. This paper aims to explore loyalty to the sustainable university during the later COVID-19 pandemic based on the university’s efforts to manage a green campus.

Design/methodology/approach

To investigate loyalty towards the sustainable university during the later COVID-19 pandemic, a conceptual model is proposed. This research is grounded in an empirical investigation using a quantitative online survey implemented with online interviews, the relations between all latent constructs being analysed with SmartPLS.

Findings

The results show that university sustainability reflects student loyalty, outlining the image developed under the influence of green campus management. The results show that universities must intensify their efforts to support the sustainable agenda and create a sustainable academic brand, inducing student loyalty. The findings may attract the attention of other universities wishing to gain knowledge about the factors that students consider important in generating their loyalty.

Research limitations/implications

As this research was carried out in the later COVID-19 pandemic context from 2021, the students already had experience of online teaching, so their assessment of the sustainability strategies implemented could be quite different from their perceptions in the first months of the pandemic. This research provides a comprehensive insight into the overall strategy that a sustainable university might apply in a crisis context.

Social implications

Research has shown that green campus management has a positive impact on the sustainability of a university’s image, on how students perceive the university at which they study and on the university’s efforts to ensure efficient campus management. These factors contribute to the development of a strong and sustainable image of the university within the community.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper lies in the research questions designed to conceptualise and operationalise the generation of students' loyalty towards their university by encouraging and implementing sustainable strategies on campus. This paper highlights a structural model that combines strategic practices to determine students' loyalty towards a sustainable university during the COVID-19 pandemic.
