Abstract

Purpose

The rapidly increasing number of older adults cycling through local criminal justice systems (jails, probation, and parole) suggests a need for greater collaboration among a diverse group of local stakeholders including professionals from healthcare delivery, public health, and criminal justice and directly affected individuals, their families, and advocates. The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework that local communities can use to understand and begin to address the needs of criminal justice-involved older adults.

Design/methodology/approach

The framework included solicit input from community stakeholders to identify pressing challenges facing criminal justice-involved older adults, conduct needs assessments of criminal justice-involved older adults and professionals working with them; implement quick-response interventions based on needs assessments; share findings with community stakeholders and generate public feedback; engage interdisciplinary group to develop an action plan to optimize services.

Findings

A five-step framework for creating an interdisciplinary community response is an effective approach to action planning and broad stakeholder engagement on behalf of older adults cycling through the criminal justice system.

Originality/value

This study proposes the Criminal Justice Involved Older Adults in Need of Treatment Initiative Framework for establishing an interdisciplinary community response to the growing population of medically and socially vulnerable criminal justice-involved older adults.

Devotes the entire journal issue to managing human behaviour in US industries, with examples drawn from the airline industry, trading industry, publishing industry, metal products industry, motor vehicle and parts industry, information technology industry, food industry, the airline industry in a turbulent environment, the automotive sales industry, and specialist retailing industry. Outlines the main features of each industry and the environment in which it is operating. Provides examples, insights and quotes from Chief Executive Officers, managers and employees on their organization’s recipe for success. Mentions the effect technology has had in some industries. Talks about skilled and semi‐skilled workers, worker empowerment and the formation of teams. Addresses also the issue of change and the training that is required to deal with it in different industry sectors. Discusses remuneration packages and incentives offered to motivate employees. Notes the importance of customers in the face of increased competition. Extracts from each industry sector the various human resource practices that companies employ to manage their employees effectively ‐ revealing that there is a wide diversity in approach and what is right for one industry sector would not work in another. Offers some advice for managers, but, overall, fails to summarize what constitutes effective means of managing human behaviour.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the 3 D separated flow fields and heat transfer characteristics at the end wall of a serpentine channel with various turn clearances using topological analysis and critical points principles of three-dimensional vortex flow.

Design/methodology/approach

This aims to explore the 3 D separated flow fields and heat transfer characteristics at the end wall of a serpentine channel with various turn clearances using topological analysis as well as critical points principles of three-dimensional vortex flow.

Findings

The endwall heat transfer in the narrow spacing passage is significantly stronger than that in a wide spacing channel. As the gap clearance is kept at 0.87 times of the hydraulic diameter, the endwall heat transfer and thermal performance can be accordingly enhanced with low pressure drops, which is because a relatively strong concentrated impingement flow for the medium gap clearance helps to restrain the downstream fluid flow and enhance the shear effect of the secondary flow.

Practical implications

The numerical results can be applied in designing sharp turn of serpentine channel in heat exchangers, heat sinks, piping system, solar receiver and gas turbine blades.

Originality/value

The evolution mechanism of the vortices in the turning region under different gap clearance was analyzed, and thermal enhancement characteristics were predicted innovatively using topological analysis method.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a solution for dissolving the “privacy paradox” in social networks, and explore the feasibility of adopting a synergistic mechanism of “deep-learning algorithms” and “differential privacy algorithms” to dissolve this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

To validate our viewpoint, this study constructs a game model with two algorithms as the core strategies.

Findings

The “deep-learning algorithms” offer a “profit guarantee” to both network users and operators. On the other hand, the “differential privacy algorithms” provide a “security guarantee” to both network users and operators. By combining these two approaches, the synergistic mechanism achieves a balance between “privacy security” and “data value”.

Practical implications

The findings of this paper suggest that algorithm practitioners should accelerate the innovation of algorithmic mechanisms, network operators should take responsibility for users’ privacy protection, and users should develop a correct understanding of privacy. This will provide a feasible approach to achieve the balance between “privacy security” and “data value”.

Originality/value

These findings offer some insights into users’ privacy protection and personal data sharing.
