Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the corrosion resistance of anodized 6063 Al alloy inertial air–water separator by means of silane technology and to investigate the effect of corrosion-generated surface roughness changes on aerodynamic performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The BTSE-KH560 double-layer silane film treatment technique is used to close micropores on the anodic oxide film surface. The microstructure of the coating is observed by scanning electron microscopy, the coating structure of the specimens is determined by X-ray diffraction (XPS) and the corrosion resistance is determined by electrochemical and salt-spray tests. Computational fluid dynamics is also used to calculate the effect of roughness and analyse the change in separator performance.

Findings

The silane film deposited on the surface of the anodic oxide film acts as a good seal against microporous defects on the surface of the anodic oxide film and reduces the surface roughness. Electrochemical and salt-spray tests show that the silane film improved the corrosion resistance of the anodized film. The roughness produced by the corrosion deteriorates the performance of the separator.

Originality/value

The porous structure of the anodized coating makes it easier for corrosive ions to enter the substrate and cause pitting corrosion. Therefore, in this study, the corrosion behaviour of the coating in the marine environment and its effect on aerodynamic performance are investigated using a BTSE-KH560 double-layer silane coating with a sealing effect.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to obtain the environmental factor, which has the greatest effect on the corrosion rate of Q235 carbon steel under thin electrolyte layer, and to analyze the effect of this factor on the corrosion morphology, corrosion products and polarization process of Q235 carbon steel.

Design/methodology/approach

An electrochemical device, which can be used under thin electrolyte layer is designed to measure the corrosion current in different environments. Response surface methodology (RSM) is introduced to analyze the effect of environmental factors on corrosion rate. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique are used to analyze the results. The Tafel slopes of anode and cathode in different humidity and solution are calculated by least square method.

Findings

The three environmental factors are ranked according to importance, namely, humidity, temperature and chloride ion deposition rate. In a high humidity environment, the relative content of α-FeOOH in the corrosion product is high and the relative content of β-FeOOH is low. The higher the humidity, the lower the degree of anodic blockage, whereas the degree of cathodic blockage is independent of humidity. The above experiments confirm the effectiveness and efficiency of the device, indicating it can be used for the screening of corrosive environmental factors.

Originality/value

In this paper, an electrochemical device under thin film is designed, which can simulate atmospheric corrosion well. Subsequent SEM and XRD confirmed the reliability of the data measured by this device. The introduction of a scientific RSM can overcome the limitations of orthogonal experiments and more specifically and intuitively analyze the effects of environmental factors on corrosion rates.

Abstract

Purpose

It is known that people's expectation towards their living “green” is increasing. Green features are now regarded as one of the important considerations of buyers in purchasing a property. This research paper aims to investigate the significance of the green features of residential buildings to property buyers.

Design/methodology/approach

HK‐BEAM certification and HK‐GBC Award are used as the measurement of green residential buildings. The study used a hedonic price model to determine whether there is a relationship between green features and residential property price and the influence of green features on the residential property price if there is such relationship.

Findings

The empirical results show that green features have a significant and positive relationship with residential property price. People are willing to pay more for green buildings recognized by HK‐BEAM and HK‐GBC. They are willing to pay a sale price premium ranging from 3.4 percent to 6.4 percent. Furthermore, a relatively larger premium is found in Hong Kong Island compared to the New Territories.

Research limitations/implications

The results imply that environmentally friendly green buildings both increase the value of a property and attract property buyers; and well‐recognized green building schemes add value to properties and hence increase the property price.

Originality/value

The study has contributed an indication of the amount a buyer would be willing to pay for quality green buildings as a reference for users, developers and investors. The study sheds light on the ability of the market to capitalize environmental considerations in investment decisions.

Abstract

Prior studies document increased share repurchase activity after the temporary tax holiday under the American Jobs Creation Act (AJCA) of 2004. Our study examines the moderating effect of financial statement readability on share repurchases in response to a temporary reduction in repatriation tax. Building on prior literature, we argue that firms with excess cash overseas, despite the lack of investment opportunities, produce less readable financial statements to hide bad news. We find that firms with less readable financial statements initiated higher levels of share repurchases after the AJCA. Our results contribute to the existing literature showing (1) firms hold excess cash overseas mainly for tax reasons rather than for nontax reasons such as precautionary motives or empire-building concerns and (2) firms return excess funds to investors rather than squander the funds once the tax cost of repatriation is reduced. Firms that suffer from the overinvestment problem using hard-to-read financial statements to hide the bad news of a lack of investment opportunities are more likely to benefit from the tax cut. Our study provides timely evidence of potential firm response to the 2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Act, which permanently removes the repatriation tax.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to use the institutional perspective to jointly explore the underlying motives that drive Chinese private small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to invest in the developed economy of Germany and the role China’s institutional environment is playing in this context.

Design/methodology/approach

Given the lack of recent in-depth studies, the authors use multiple case study method to present rich insights from elite interviews with executives belonging to seven Chinese SMEs and industry experts, as well as the study of firm documents, social media and the latest governmental policies.

Findings

The results indicate not only market-, resource- and strategic asset-seeking motives, but contrary to the literature, also efficiency-seeking goals. Further driving factors are the integration in global value chains and high degrees of entrepreneurial orientation. The second major finding is that China’s institutional environment induces widely divergent effects. Its ministries established new outward foreign direct investments (OFDI) support measures that are beneficial for some SMEs’ post-entry operations. However, some firms are not aware of any support measures or suffer from discrimination that hinders innovation and from which they try to escape by investing abroad.

Originality/value

This paper considers different levels of analysis (firm, entrepreneur, institutional environment) to investigate Chinese SMEs’ motives in Europe’s largest market. By examining why and how these firms use OFDI to a developed economy, the authors address an essential question for China’s economy that is of primary political and academic concern (“How can China get that improved innovation that often seeds entrepreneurial growth?”). In addition, the study contributes to the growing discussion of institutional escapism in emerging markets by revealing five institutional hardships Chinese SMEs are facing and how this relates to their internationalization.

Abstract

Attempts to analyse the importance of transportation in determining house prices in Hong Kong. Residential property is sold as a package of inherent attributes that are valued by consumers and this analysis classifies them into the following categories: structural, physical and environmental. Specifically, these determinants of housing price include structural attributes such as size, age and floor level of the housing units; amenities such as accessibility to various means of transport; and factors determining the quality of the environment such as availability of recreational facilities. In this study, data were obtained from a large residential area in Hong Kong. Uses a Hedonic price model for estimating the importance of each of the defined utility‐bearing attributes on house prices.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present and analyze the effect of applied load and sliding velocity on the tribological behaviors of aramid fiber (AF) reinforced PA1010 which can be a potential material for transmission components.

Design/methodology/approach

The PA1010 composites with different content of AF are prepared and the tribology experiments are conducted on a block‐on‐ring wear tester under different experiment conditions. The wear mechanism of the composite is examined by means of scanning electron microscopy.

Findings

The addition of AF decreased the friction coefficient of PA1010 and increased its wear resistance. For optimal tribological properties 5∼15 wt% AF is preferred, while the wear resistance is best at 15 wt%. The friction coefficient decreased with increasing load and sliding velocity, but it is more sensitive to load. The main wear mechanism is abrasive wear at relatively low load and sliding velocity. With the increasing of load, the adhesive wear occurs in the matrix, meanwhile obvious fibrillation and layer peeling are observed on the fiber. When the sliding velocity increases, thermal adhesion and fiber debonding is the dominant mechanism.

Practical implications

PA1010 is a useful material for the alternative material of transmission components in industry.

Originality/value

PA1010 composite is prepared with a new kind of AF fiber and the tribology experiments have been carried out emphasizing on the variation of experiment conditions. The results could be useful for the material engineers.

Abstract

Purpose

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is significant in the financial market. Despite plenty of existing research on CSR, few studies have quantified the fine-grained aspects of CSR and examined how diverse CSR aspects are associated with firms' trade credit. Based on the released CSR reports, this paper strives to measure the CSR fulfillment of firms and examine the relationships between CSR and trade credit in terms of textual features presented in these reports.

Design/methodology/approach

This research proposes a natural language processing-based framework to extract the overall readability and the sentiment of fine-grained aspects from CSR reports, which can signal the performance of firms' CSR in diverse aspects. Furthermore, this paper explores how the textual features are associated with trade credit through partial dependence plots (PDPs), and PDPs can generate both linear and nonlinear relationships.

Findings

The study’s results reveal that the overall readability of the reports is positively associated with trade credit, while the performance of the fine-grained CSR aspects mentioned in the CSR reports matters differently. The performance of the environment has a positive impact on trade credit; the performance of creditors, suppliers and information disclosure, shows a U-shaped influence on trade credit; while the performance of the government and customers is negatively associated with trade credit.

Originality/value

This study expands the scope of research on CSR and trade credit by investigating fine-grained aspects covered in CSR reports. It also offers some managerial implications in the allocation of CSR resources and the presentation of CSR reports.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to discuss the binary matrix of spatial association which is suggested by Moran, and proposes a new method of the definition of the w matrix to obtain a new space‐time correlation coefficient considering the correlation of both time and space.

Design/methodology/approach

From the perspective of the multi‐dimension of space and time, this article proposes a new computational method of a correlation coefficient considering both temporal and spatial factors, based on the analysis of the characteristics of Moran's Global Index and Moran's Local Index. The number of patents granted in mainland China's provinces and municipalities is taken as an example of multi‐dimensional analysis.

Findings

The results of quantitative analysis using this space‐time correlation coefficient show that the outcomes calculated by this new correlation coefficient are not only highly correlated with Moran's Index, but also have advantages in analyzing the trends of both spatial and temporal indicators simultaneously, which is verified by the illustration of the algorithm.

Research limitations/implications

Due to a scarcity of data in China, the algorithm is based on data for the last 20 years, which may not be long enough for this research. Although this does not reduce the value of the conclusions of this article, a closer look should be taken at the effectiveness of the new space‐time correlation coefficient in the future.

Practical implications

The results of space‐time correlation coefficient are highly correlated with Moran's Index. In addition, it can not only analyze the “flow” indicators in a certain period but also analyze the “stock” indicators to reflect both space and time changes. These may reflect superiority of space‐time correlation coefficient to Moran's Index.

Originality/value

This new correlation coefficient that considers both temporal and spatial factors and will provide a more scientific and effective tool for spatial econometric analysis in time and space changes of management on society and the economy.

Songkhla Lake is the largest lake in Thailand along the Bay of Thailand, situated at latitude 7°08′ and 7°50′ north and longitude 100°07′ and 100°37′ east (Fig. 4.1).
