Abstract

Both China and Taiwan have pursued aggressive investments in the computer industry over the last five years. Using Michael Porter’s Determinants of National Competitive Advantage, the potential of both countries can be analyzed not only separately, but also in terms of the combined resources based on the possibility that Taiwan and China join forces in pursuing a stronger position in the global computer industry. The critical factor in determining the synergies will be the policies of the governments of China and Taiwan.

Abstract

The semiconductor industry has attracted considerable attention during the last twenty years as a major high stakes business battlefield between American corporations and Japanese society. Recently, other Asian countries have made inroads into this industry. Consistent with Michael Porter's thesis on the importance of national industry related clusters (Porter, J 990), this paper predicts that between now and the year 2000, the entrepreneurial characteristics of American companies will lead them to significant market share increases and that Japanese businesses will lose market share to other Asian companies, particularly in South Korea. Beyond the year 2000, the industry may evolve to the point where geographic areas concentrate on specific dimensions of the industry with the United States strong in innovation and Asia emphasizing manufacturing efficiencies. It is also possible that later in the 21st century, continued economic growth in Asia could lead to Asian companies taking expanded leadership roles in the industry. This paper acknowledges the importance of government intervention both in the United States and Japan in the early stages of the industry, but argues that the evolving maturity of the semiconductor industry is reducing the need for government subsidies, even though trade issues, especially with China, continue to be important.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a strategic analysis of how globalization has enabled Australian companies to transform the wine industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The global wine industry is analyzed from two strategic management perspectives: Michael Porter's positioning concepts and the hypercompetitive framework of Richard D'Aveni with particular emphasis on the success of the Australian Yellow Tail brand.

Findings

The forces of globalization have caused significant changes in a historically stable industry. The success of the Yellow Tail brand demonstrates how a focused strategy with the right product, distribution and marketing can cause significant industry disruptions. Overall, the D'Aveni framework of hypercompetition seems to best describe the impact of Australian wine companies, although the generic strategies of Michael Porter may still be applicable when considering the French industry.

Research limitations/implications

The focus is on using two strategic frameworks; there are others which could have been included. The example of Australian wine companies has been used to illustrate the changes in the overall market, but studying other “new world” wine producers such as Chile or Argentina may also add insight.

Practical implications

The paper provides an example of how the academic frameworks of strategic management can be applied to different industries and shows that dynamic forces of globalization can emerge from any corner of the world and cause dramatic economic change.

Originality/value

This paper will be of interest to those studying the global dimensions of strategic management and its practical implications.

Abstract

Purpose

Global warming and drastic environment fluctuations have given rise to worldwide emergency, demanding to discover the most unexplored area in the field of social responsibility that is, consumer social responsibility (CnSR). This study aims to define the novel term “CnSR” and its antecedents to accomplish long-term sustainability. An in-depth analysis is executed to discover key antecedents, and proposed tool validation is implemented with the help of the big size of consumer population.

Design/methodology/approach

Primary data are collated using consumer responses, and reliability statistics were analyzed implementing Cronbach's alpha, and factor analysis is performed for required validation.

Findings

Probing existing research, CnSR was mostly correlated with consumers’ ethical and moral behavior. The present work proposes a unique tool which has successfully revealed a broader approach resulting in four vital antecedents: environmental orientation (EO), ethical and moral disposition (EMD), spiritual orientation (SO) and orientation toward shared consumption (OSC). Cronbach's alpha is adopted to determine internal consistency of the survey and has showed precision of 0.953 which affirms accuracy of the proposed tool.

Research limitations/implications

Splitting of EO using factor analysis into environmental oriented preference (EOP) and recyclable oriented preference (ROP) has indicated further required inputs for better understanding.

Practical implications

Sustainable issues were limited to corporates in the form of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. Present work demands consumer awareness about their consumption consequences and fix their responsibility to achieve long-term sustainability.

Originality/value

The present study is the first to identify the antecedents of CnSR and effectively demonstrates a tool for the same.
