Abstract

Discusses the radioactive gas radon and its effects on the legal obligations of surveyors and other professionals concerned with the designing, refurbishment and appraisal of dwellings. Presents an overview of the problem of radon, concentrating on health issues and summarizing both its measurement and the way in which it enters dwellings. Outlines the protective measures needed to prevent radon entering new homes and existing dwellings, mentioning NRPB guidances. Details the legal implications for surveyors in these two separate situations, discussing suing in respect of physical injuries or death, the event of the property becoming unsaleable and for pure economic loss. Explores the surveyor′s duty in respect to radon and the implications of the Defective Premises Act 1972.

Abstract

The new cattle movement regulations of 1st March, 1960, mark the final stages of the plan to eradicate tuberculosis from cattle in this country. The last “ specified area ” under the Tuberculosis (Area Eradication) Order, 1950, it is hoped to declare about the same date. It comprises districts in the northeast and north midlands ; Scotland and Wales are already fully attested areas. Because of the need to prevent the re‐introduction of infection to the national herd now that the Scheme of eradicating bovine tuberculosis is moving towards completion—(it is estimated that 300,000 cattle remain to be tuberculin tested and that the eradication scheme costing about £130 millions will be finally completed by October 1st next)—cattle imported for immediate slaughter, unless “ accredited ” (attested) or of the “ once tested ” status, will be licensed from the landing places at ports only to a limited number of slaughter‐houses, mainly public, named in the regulations. Accredited or “ once tested ” cattle accompanied by the requisite veterinary certificate will be licensed to any slaughterhouse, subject to the provisions of the Tuberculosis (Area Eradication) Order, 1950, as amended, which means there will be no market in this country for untested store cattle after 1st March. This class of cattle will therefore go to swell the number of fat cattle imported from Eire for slaughter. Last year (1959) the latter numbered 72,000.

Abstract

Purpose

In the implementation of integrated care, the role of managers is important and their mutual collaboration should be addressed more visibly. The purpose of this study was to investigate how cross-boundary collaboration is constructed in the discourse of middle-level managers in health and social care.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was based on a discursive approach. Group discussions with three groups of Finnish middle managers (n = 39) were analyzed using discourse analysis.

Findings

Five ways of talking about cross-boundary collaboration were identified, labeled “ideal”, “structure”, “defence”, “money” and “support” discourses. In the ideal discourse, cross-boundary collaboration appeared as a “good thing” and is self-evident. Structural discourse defined managers as passive actors in self-sustaining entities. Defensive discourse highlighted the problems of cross-boundary collaboration and the hierarchy within the health and social sectors. Financial discourse constituted the ultimate obstacle to successful cross-boundary collaboration, and both strengthened and explained defensive discourse. Supportive discourse portrayed other managers as partners and as an important resource.

Research limitations/implications

Cross-boundary collaboration can be experienced as a resource, helping managers cope with their workload. However, identification of and continuous attention to challenges at macro, meso and micro levels of integrated care is crucial for successful collaboration. Thus, critical discussion of collaboration needs to be given space.

Originality/value

The study design and discursive approach highlights the power of language and give voice to middle managers who are key actors when implementing integrated care.

Abstract

In a recent issue of the Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, Blake strongly criticised an article on organisational change by Blumberg and Wiener for the authors' failure thoroughly to review the literature and for missing important material relevant to their study. In response, Blumberg simply stated that they were not aware of the material, because it had appeared in a relatively obscure journal. Indeed, a later writer (Zurcher) criticised one of Blake's papers on the same grounds, and then suggested that an event such as this might easily happen to any of us. Despite their apparent conflict, each of these individuals did agree, of course, that a thorough review of the literature on any given topic is necessary to good research and reporting. Our purpose here is not to pour salt on wounds, but rather to illustrate our raison d'être for presenting the material below.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to identify exogenous factors that would depress synthesis of saturated fats and enhance synthesis of unsaturated fats in the dairy cow’s mammary gland. Certain long‐chain exogenous fatty acids are known to modulate endogenous fat synthesis within tissues. We analyzed the effects of two different long‐chain monounsaturated fatty acids, namely oleic acid and trans‐vaccenic acid (TVA), on activities of acetyl‐CoA carboxylase (ACC), fatty acid synthetase (FAS) and stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) in bovine mammary epithelial cell cultures. The study was done using an established bovine mammary epithelial cell line, the MacT cells. ACC (EC 6.4.1.2) and FAS (EC 2.3.1.85) are two major enzymes involved in biosynthesis of saturated fatty acids in eucaryotic cells. SCD (EC 1.14.99.5) is the enzyme catalyzing the critical committed step in biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids from their saturated precursors. Data indicated depression of activity of enzymes responsible for mammary synthesis of saturated fatty acids (ACC and FAS), along with a simultaneous enhancement of mammary desaturase activity, by TVA.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a systematic literature review of 176 studies relating to change management in the context of process optimization and to investigate how companies effectively use change management to optimize processes across different industrial sectors.

Design/methodology/approach

Descriptive statistics are used to represent patterns, trends and correlations between change management strategies, research methods applied for processes optimization and industry field. A comprehensive analysis of the papers’ keywords, crossed with research methods and industrial sectors, allowed us to substantiate the results in analytic terms. For some selected studies, chosen on the basis of their significance to the research field, the contents were mapped and discussed in detail.

Findings

This study provides numerous insights into the various applications of change management across different industry fields. In general, change management appears to be no longer a theoretical discipline, showing instead practical relevance, which is reflected in testing theories through case studies and real implementations. The review emphasizes the need for careful and systemic planning by companies, effective communication, employee involvement and supportive organizational culture. These factors are crucial for enhancing process efficiency and employee acceptance of change. Digital technologies also prove to be valuable support for change management during process optimization.

Originality/value

The innovative contribution of this paper consists of the joint perspective taken when looking at process optimization and the application of change management strategies. Such a perspective favors an in-depth examination of the interactions between the two aspects and provides more comprehensive results compared to the existing literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to revisit the properties of 24-item version of mindfulness scale proposed by Bohlmeijer et al. (2011) in an Indian context to add to the existing global knowledge base on mindfulness.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire was administered to 531 adult employees working in the IT/ITES sector in India. Their responses were analysed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and validity statistics to validate the Indian adaptation of the five-facet mindfulness questionnaire (FFMQ).

Findings

The findings confirmed that the Indian version of the 24-item short form of the FFMQ (denoted as FFMQ-SF) matches the findings of Bohlmeijer et al. (2011). It can, therefore, provide valuable insights to both employees and management on the benefits of mindfulness in the workplace.

Research limitations/implications

This paper also presents the limitations of this work along with scholarly and practical implications. It enhances the global understanding of mindfulness, with applications in education, health and well-being, workplaces, social justice, spirituality and personal growth.

Originality/value

This study justifies and presents a unique instrument for assessing employee mindfulness and is beneficial for both management and employees in navigating the evolving hybrid work environment. It promotes present-moment awareness in a non-judgemental manner, facilitating perspective shifts, improved self-regulation and experiential acceptance. Additionally, the study affirms the five-dimensional structure underlying the mindfulness construct.

Abstract

In this observation study the theory of conglomerated conflict behavior is tested. The impact of seven conflict behaviors on substantive and relational conflict outcomes is examined through multiple independent observations of 103 Dutch nurse managers handling a standardized conflict. Results show that process controlling is most important for achieving substantive outcomes, whereas problem solving, confronting, and forcing are most important for relational outcomes. In addition, substantive and relational outcomes are positively related. Implications for managerial practice and training are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to review the last 50 years of academic research on collective leadership (CL) and how far it has progressed by using the Scopus database and the science mapping technique of bibliometric analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

This study has analysed 417 publications from the Scopus database on collective leadership from 1967 to 2023. Data were analysed using MS Excel and VOSviewer.

Findings

There has been research from different parts of the world on the various aspects of collective leadership. In recent years, collective leadership research has gained momentum. However, collective leadership is still at a nascent level when it comes to the applicability of the concepts. So far, the research on collective leadership has relied on themes such as shared leadership and distributed leadership, how collective leadership differs from other similar-looking leadership styles such as transformational leadership, and how this influences followers’ outcomes such as team effectiveness, achievements, relations, commitment, etc. Most of the research so far has been done in the United States of America, the UK and the Australian context. There exists a huge gap for studying collective leadership in African, Middle Eastern and Asian contexts.

Research limitations/implications

Collective leadership research trends may be addressed to enable academics and practitioners to better understand current and future trends and research directions. Future studies in this field might use the findings as a starting point to highlight the nature of the topic.

Originality/value

Bibliometric techniques provide a far more comprehensive and reliable picture of the field. This article has the potential to serve as a one-stop resource for researchers and practitioners seeking information that can aid in transdisciplinary endeavours by leading them to recognized, peer-reviewed papers, journals and networks.
