Abstract

Purpose

This work aims to compare the vibration behavior of roller and ball bearings operating with clean and quartz‐contaminated lubricants. Wear influence on vibration of both bearing types was also compared.

Design/methodology/approach

Experimental tests were run in clean and contaminated mineral oil. Contaminant quartz particles of 59 μm average size were tested in three concentration levels: 0.05, 0.25 and 0.5 g/l. Radial vibration of the roller bearing was measured by accelerometer and wear was analyzed through microscopy of the surfaces and optical spectrometry of oils.

Findings

Differences in vibration response among both bearing types were observed regarding the root mean square value of vibration data in the high frequency band (600‐10,000 Hz); differences in wear influence on vibration were also identified and correlated to the differences in the tribological features.

Originality/value

This paper presents a methodology for detecting contamination and wear of roller bearings by applying a simple procedure of vibration monitoring and analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide information on lubricant contamination by biodiesel using vibration and neural network.

Design/methodology/approach

The possible contamination of lubricants is verified by analyzing the vibration and neural network of a bench test under determinated conditions.

Findings

Results have shown that classical signal analysis methods could not reveal any correlation between the signal and the presence of contamination, or contamination grade. On other hand, the use of probabilistic neural network (PNN) was very successful in the identification and classification of contamination and its grade.

Research limitations/implications

This study was done for some specific kinds of biodiesel. Other types of biodiesel could be analyzed.

Practical implications

Contamination information is presented in the vibration signal, even if it is not evident by classical vibration analysis. In addition, the use of PNN gives a relatively simple and easy‐to‐use detection tool with good confidence. The training process is fast, and allows implementation of an adaptive training algorithm.

Originality/value

This research could be extended to an internal combustion engine in order to verify a possible contamination by biodiesel.

Abstract

Purpose

The main objective of the paper is to explore the theoretical correlation of base oil viscosity in grease and to study the effect of grease grade on mechanical vibrations associated with the damaged rolling bearings.

Design/methodology/approach

For theoretical purposes, formulation theory of dimensional analysis was implemented. Experiments were then performed on the test bearings lubricated with three different types of greases, namely, SKF LGHP2, SKF LGMT3 and SKF LGWA2.

Findings

The numerical results obtained from the theoretical model along with the results of experiments show that the vibration amplitudes of the defective bearings come down to a lower level when it is lubricated with the grease of a higher base oil viscosity.

Research limitations/implications

The promising results from the theoretical model make it usable for the practical rotating machineries applying a variety of the rolling bearings. Consequently, if the bearing is not severely damaged, its performance can be increased by lubricating it with thicker grease.

Originality/value

Despite many significant contributions in the field to detect the presence of defects, not many studies have been performed that relate the lubrication condition of the rolling bearings with the vibration response, because around 50-75% of the bearing failures are attributed to be lubrication related. Hence, there is need to develop a mathematical model that can correlate the vibration severity of the bearings with viscosity of the lubricant oil in the greases along with other design and operating parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to characterize the lubrication condition under sliding-rolling contact using three indicators, including the oil film thickness and two perpendicular (vertical and tangential) vibrations. The lubrication deterioration can then be detected when sliding occurs in rolling contact.

Design/methodology/approach

An experimental study is presented to identify the lubrication deterioration under sliding-rolling contact. Sliding-rolling experiments with controlled loads, slip ratios and speeds are carried out on a roller-ring test rig. The deterioration of lubrication condition is analyzed by the transient oil film thickness and two perpendicular vibration signals, respectively.

Findings

The oil film thickness and the vibration signal play different roles in characterizing different lubrication deterioration conditions. Specifically, the degree of lubrication deterioration with slight solid-contact is indicated by the rapid reduction in oil film thickness. The degree of lubrication deterioration with severe solid-contact is reflected by two perpendicular (vertical and tangential) vibrations. Furthermore, the tangential vibration can indicate the occurrence of sliding in rolling contact.

Originality/value

A full characterization of the lubrication deterioration under sliding-rolling contact can be accomplished by integrating both the oil film thickness and two perpendicular vibration monitoring.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the application of neural networks on vehicle engine systems for fault detecting and analysing engine oils.

Design/methodology/approach

Three types of neural networks are employed to find exact neural network predictor of vehicle engine oil performance and quality. Nevertheless, two oil types are analysed for predicting performance in the engine. These oils are used and unused oils. In experimental work, two accelerometers are located at the bottom of the car engine to measure related vibrations for analysing oil quality of both cases.

Findings

The results of both computer simulation and experimental work show that the radial basis neural network predictor gives good performance at adapting different cases.

Research limitations/implications

The results of the proposed neural network analyser follow the desired results of the vehicle engine's vibration variation. However, this kind of neural network scheme can be used to analyse oil quality of the car in experimental applications.

Practical implications

As theoretical and practical studies are evaluated together, it is hoped that oil analysers and interested researchers will obtain significant results in this application area.

Originality/value

This paper is an original contribution on vehicle oil quality analysis using a proposed artificial neural network and it should be helpful for industrial applications of vehicle oil quality analysis and fault detection.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to characterize the pitting behaviour of sigma-phase-containing duplex stainless steel and investigate the correlation between magnetic susceptibility and pitting potentials.

Design/methodology/approach

Use an alternating current (AC) magnetic susceptometer to trace the change in magnetic susceptibility associated with sigma phase formation and systematic study of the effects of sigma precipitation on pitting parameters as obtained using the anodic potentiodynamic polarization test.

Findings

The precipitation of sigma phase impairs the general and pitting corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steel. The pitting potential, the corrosion potential and the AC magnetic susceptibility have good correlations. Unlike the pitting potential and the corrosion potential, the passive current and the corrosion current do not seem to possess any trend with annealing time.

Originality/value

The correlation between AC magnetic susceptibility and pitting parameters has not been reported in the literature before.

Abstract

Purpose

A finite element method (FEM) model of the frictional behavior of two rough surfaces with a group of third-body particles confined by the surface asperities is established. By monitoring the stress distribution, friction force and the displacement of the surfaces, how the frictional instability is induced by these particles is studied. This modeling job aims to explore the relation between the meso-scale behavior and the macro-scale frictional behavior of these particles.

Design/methodology/approach

By using FEM, a 2D model of two frictional rough surfaces with a group of elastic or elasto-plastic particles confined by surface asperities is established. The Mises stress, macro friction force and displacements of elements are monitored during compressing and shearing steps.

Findings

The macro friction coefficient is more stable under higher pressure and smaller under higher shearing speed. The dilatancy of the interface is caused by the elevation effect of the particles sheared on the peak of the lower surface, particles collision and third body supporting. The combined effect of particles motion and surface–surface contact will induce high-frequency displacements of surface units in restricted direction.

Originality/value

Previous studies about third-body tribology are mainly concentrated on the frictional behavior with large number of particles distributed homogeneously across the interface, but this paper focuses on the behavior of third-body particles confined by surface asperities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to conduct a legal realist assessment of women’s situation in European immigration detention which focuses on relevant international and European human rights instruments applicable to conditions and health rights in detention settings, academic literature and relevant European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) jurisprudence since 2010.

Design/methodology/approach

In spite of the United Nations human rights frameworks and European Union (EU) standards, conditions in European immigration detention settings continue to pose a health risk to those detained. Migrant health rights when detained are intertwined with the right not to be subjected to arbitrary detention, detention in conditions compatible for respect for human dignity and right to medical assistance. Migrant women are particularly vulnerable requiring special consideration (pregnant and lactating women; single women travelling alone or with children; adolescent girls; early-married children, including with newborn infants) in immigration detention settings.

Findings

The situation of women in immigration detention is patchy in EU policy, academic literature and ECtHR jurisprudence. Where referred to, they are at best confined to their positionality as pregnant women or as mothers, with their unique gendered health needs ill-resourced. ECtHR jurisprudence is largely from male applicants. Where women are applicants, cases centre on dire conditions of detention, extreme vulnerability of children accompanying their mother and arbitrary or unlawful detention of these women (with child).

Originality/value

Concerns have been raised by the European Parliament around immigration detention of women including those travelling with their children. There is a continued failure to maintain minimum and equivalent standards of care for women in European immigration detention settings.
