Abstract
Once upon a time, in a nearby low country appropriately called The Netherlands, in a town well known for its antique beauty and called after its porcelain ware Delft, a couple of librarians with high ideals and a practical sense that heeded no beauty founded the Microfiche Foundation. They went to the local notary public, produced from their own pockets the money required for founding such an institution and had the pleasure of seeing their brainchild duly registered, after which the notary said his bill was exactly the amount of money on the table. So that the child started its career with the bare minimum of goods. And so it has always been. And if at the end of the journey it may look back at a fruitful life this will not be due to its riches, nor always to generous support, but to the belief and the perseverance of its followers.

Abstract
There is increasing academic pressure on Departments of Accounting in South Africa whose academic programmes are accredited with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). The reason for this that the academic training of potential chartered accountants has long been their main academic focus, and they often fail to do justice to their real academic mission of scholarly activity in accounting (the pursuit of science as an endeavour), which is central to the essence of a university. The quality of such departments’ research is not yet an important criterion for their prestige. However, only Departments of Accounting that develop Accounting as a social science in scholarly activity in accounting deserve international recognition. This empirical study attempts to convince Departments of Accounting, particularly those whose academic programmes are accredited by SAICA, to embark on scholarly activity in accounting as soon as possible.

Abstract
The microfiche has become widespread in its use in recent years largely through its standardization by the United States Government for reports. Based on a process invented by J. Goebel in 1939, it owed its rapid development in Europe to the efforts of Dr L. J. van der Wolk, who created the Netherlands Microfiche Foundation. Now that there is some standardization of microfiche size and format, this microform has a much greater chance of success than it did when each manufacturer or publisher produced microfiche to his own sheet size and frame spacing and, in general, to an inadequate standard of quality. The 6 in. by 4 in. COSAT1 format is a most suitable standard and this agrees with the preferred size in the British Standard.

Abstract
AT the very outset of this paper it is necessary to make clear that it is not an attempt to compile an exhaustive bibliography of literature relating to special librarianship. Neither space nor time permit this. In fact, the references given can only claim to be a sample of the wealth of material on the subject and this paper is submitted in the hope that it will stimulate others to more scholarly efforts. Reference numbers throughout this paper refer to items in the ‘Select list of references to the literature of special librarianship’, section 2 onwards.

Abstract
It has often been said that a great part of the strength of Aslib lies in the fact that it brings together those whose experience has been gained in many widely differing fields but who have a common interest in the means by which information may be collected and disseminated to the greatest advantage. Lists of its members have, therefore, a more than ordinary value since they present, in miniature, a cross‐section of institutions and individuals who share this special interest.
All items listed may be borrowed from the Aslib Library, except those marked, which may be consulted in the Library.
