Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand how the meanings of veal change from 1989 to 2014 in the pages of two major newspapers.

Design/methodology/approach

Articles in The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph that use the word “veal” were selected (n=1,387). Articles were read for emergent themes and each use of the word veal was coded. Each newspaper had phases of popularity in the use of the word “veal,” and unique words for each of these phases were identified. The context of these unique words was examined in order to illustrate changes in what to eat and why, as well as how to access food and act toward it.

Findings

This paper illustrates how readers are meaningfully encouraged to engage in food politics in ways that may be incrementally transformative, but do not involve demanding food as a right.

Originality/value

This paper illustrates that normalizing scandalous food involves complexity and subtle changes. Shifts in messages are detected and analyzed using the related concepts of subsistence standards and practices of reciprocity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of gender diversity on the boardroom and in top management positions on the risk profile (RP) of acquiring banks.

Design/methodology/approach

To estimate the effect of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the RP of the acquirer, the authors will use the same methodology adopted by Vallascas and Hagendorff (2011), this method compares the variation of the RP of the acquirer to the level risk of control banks. To investigate how merger-related risk changes are affected by gender diversity, the authors use a linear regression.

Findings

The results show that, on average, bank mergers do not significantly affect the RP of the acquiring bank. However, the authors found that the proportion of women in the board standing reduces the RP of the acquiring bank. Overall, the authors observe evidence that the appearance of a female in top management is associated with lower bank risk. Moreover, the authors conclude that the relationship between the presence of at least three women on the board and the default risk of the acquiring bank is negative.

Originality/value

This finding suggests that in the M&A transactions, female directors are considerably more conservative than their male counterparts. Thus, the authors confirm the postulate that women are more risk averse and less overconfident than their male counterpart. The conclusions are of particular significance for the banking industry. The authors provide some support for the view that regulators should favor gender quotas in the board management of banks to reduce risk-taking behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether is Belgrade (Serbia) suitable candidate for introduction of Heat Health Warning System (HHWS). Belgrade has high population density, considerable share of built up area and lot of multi floor buildings that are factors of heat-health vulnerability.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors analyzed the impact of weather conditions on human health in Belgrade during the summer 2007 that was extremely warm in Southeastern Europe and Serbia. Daily cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and respiratory mortality counts were used in Poisson regression model with air temperature as predictor variable. Also, three different heat wave indices (Warm Spell Duration Index, apparent temperature and index based on daily minimum temperature) were tested in order to estimate their ability to capture episodes with mortality higher than expected.

Findings

The temperature has the highest influence on cerebrovascular and cardiovascular mortality, while slightly modifies respiratory mortality. According to regression equation, a 1°C increase in mean daily temperature is associated with a 4.6 percent (p<0.0001), 2.2 percent (p<0.0001) and 1.6 percent (insignificant for p<0.10) increase in cerebrovascular, cardiovascular and respiratory mortality, respectively.

Originality/value

Even thought the Law recognizes the heat wave as natural hazard, there is no concrete measures and action for prevention of excess mortality. It is shown that extreme temperature had numerous social consequences on city's residents in the summer 2007. Given the results the authors got, it is recommended that the HHWS should be implemented in health protection plans in Belgrade.
