Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the electrochemical corrosion performance of high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) sprayed WC–12Co coating in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution, which provided a guiding significance on the corrosion resistance of H13 hot work mould steel.

Design/methodology/approach

A WC–12Co coating was fabricated on H13 hot work mould steel using a HVOF, and the electrochemical corrosion behaviors of WC–12Co coating and substrate in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution was measured using open circuit potential (OCP), potentiodynamic polarization curve (PPC) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests.

Findings

The OCP and PPC of WC–12Co coating positively shift than those of substrate, its corrosion tendency and corrosion rate decrease to enhance its corrosion resistance. The curvature radius of capacitance curve on the WC–12Co coating is larger than that on the substrate, and the impedance and polarization resistance of WC–12Co coating increase faster than those of substrate, which reduces the corrosion process.

Originality/value

The electrochemical corrosion behaviors of WC–12Co coating and substrate in 3.5 Wt.% NaCl solution is first measured using OCP, PPC and EIS tests, which improve the electrochemical corrosion resistance of H13 hot work mould steel.

Abstract

Purpose

The lubrication performance of static and dynamic pressure thrust bearings is improved by introducing texture on the sealing edge.

Design/methodology/approach

Through model building, meshing and boundary condition setting, the influence of square texture on oil film lubrication performance was simulated and analyzed, and an improved algorithm was applied to perform optimization of lubrication performance.

Findings

The findings of this study reveal that the optimum lubrication performance is attained when adjusting the parameters of the square texture to 0.12 mm, 0.1 mm, 1 mm and 34 mm. In such circumstances, the thrust bearing with square textures demonstrates an increase in loading capacity of around 19% and a temperature reduction of about 2ºC compared to a smooth thrust bearing.

Originality/value

The original Reynolds equation is revised, and the influence of square texture on the physical field of oil film is analyzed, considering the turbulence state and cavitation phenomenon. The multi-objective function under square texture parameters was established using BP neural network, and the improved multi-objective salp swarm algorithm was used to optimize the process parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the emergence of civil disobedience (CD) movements in Hong Kong in the context of the notion of civil society (CS).

Design/methodology/approach

The paper begins by rigorously defining the notion of CD, as well as the concept of CS and tracing its development in Hong Kong over the past several decades. By using a model of CS typology, which combines the variables of state control and a society’s quest for autonomy (SQA), the paper aims to outline the historical development of CD movements in Hong Kong. It also discusses the recent evolution of CS and its relationship with CD movements, particularly focusing on their development since Leung Chun-ying became the Chief Executive in 2012. Finally, by using five cases of CD witnessed in the past several decades, the relationship between the development of CS and the emergence of CD in Hong Kong has been outlined.

Findings

Four implications can be concluded: first, CD cannot emerge when the state and society are isolated. Second, the level of SC and the scale of CD are positively related. Third, as an historical trend, the development of SQA is generally in linear progress; SQA starts from a low level (e.g. interest-based and welfare-based aims) and moves upwards to campaign for higher goals of civil and political autonomy. If the lower level of SQA is not satisfied, it can lead to larger scale CD in future. Fourth, the CD movement would be largest in scale when the state-society relationship confrontational and when major cleavages can be found within CS itself.

Originality/value

This paper serves to enrich knowledge in the fields of politics and sociology.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to promote an expanded two‐way dialog between Chinese and Western leaders and executives which recognizes that “wisdom” can flow in both directions.

Design/methodology/approach

Interviews were undertaken with three Chinese executives and analyzed against a model of performance excellence.

Findings

An understanding of some of the similarities and differences of Western and Chinese business practices and a conclusion that there are lessons for Western businesses to learn.

Research limitations/implications

The work involved interviews with only three Chinese executives and thus represents a tiny sample.

Practical implications

Illustrates some of the practices that might be worth considering by the West as we climb out of the current economic depression and re‐focus business efforts for a longer‐term future.

Originality/value

The paper adopts a novel approach of analyzing interview outcomes against a reference model. The core value is, however, in highlighting the benefits that might arise from extended dialog.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating role of occupational safety and health (OSH) on the relationship between high performance human resource practices (HPHRP) and organizational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected data from 227 human resource management professionals in Hong Kong, the People's Republic of China and used exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression for data analysis.

Findings

The results supported the construct validity of the preliminary measure of HPHRP with the inclusion of a measure on OSH. The mediating role of perceived safety climate in the relationship of HPHRP and organizational performance was also confirmed.

Research limitations/implications

This research highlights the importance of OSH on HPHRP in Hong Kong organizations. Results explored that HPHRP positively influences organizational performance through the mediator of perceived safety climate.

Originality/value

This paper adds value by improving the understanding of the importance of OSH in human resource management in China. It reveals an important path, HRM managers' perceived safety climate, through which HPHRP is transmitted to organizational performance.

Abstract

Purpose

To solve the problem of oil film thinning when hydrostatic thrust bearings are overloaded or rotating at high speed, the dynamic pressure formed by tiny oil wedges is used to compensate, and the optimum height of oil wedges is determined by the compensation rate to improve the bearing capacity of hydrostatic thrust bearings.

Design/methodology/approach

This research method is aimed at the new type of double rectangular cavity static bearing with microbevel surface of q1-205. The wedge parameters of oil film were defined. The oil film lubrication performance of the bearing with the wedge parameters of 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08 and 0.10 mm was simulated by the finite volume method, the comprehensive influence law of the wedge-shaped parameters on the vorticity and flow rate of the oil cavity pressure fluid was revealed. Finally, the oil cavity pressure changes of oil films with different wedge parameters under certain load and speed were tested by design experiments, and the theoretical analysis and simulation were verified.

Findings

This study found that the oil film wedge shape can well compensate the static pressure loss caused by the high-speed or heavy-duty operation of the bearing, but the dynamic pressure effect of the wedge shape does not always increase with the increase of the wedge height. The oil film exhibits superior lubrication performance in the range of 0.06–0.08 mm.

Originality/value

The original hydrostatic oil pad was designed as a microinclined plane, and the dynamic pressure caused by the microwedge of the oil pad was used to compensate the static pressure loss of the bearing. The lubrication performance of the oil film under the condition of varying viscosity was obtained by using the simulation method.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the consumer responses associated with crises in the hotel industry. More precisely, the current research explores the factors that affect consumer attitudes (i.e. impressions, perceived social responsibility, and future purchases) during a hotel crisis.

Design/methodology/approach

An experiment was conducted relying on four factors: the hotel's reputation, the extent of the crisis, external effects from regulatory agencies, and press and organisational response. Respondents were randomly assigned to 36 treatment groups (three levels of crisis extent×two levels of hotel corporate reputation×two levels of external effects×three levels of hotel response). Scenarios were developed, each describing one of the 36 treatments.

Findings

The results revealed that reputation, external effects and organisational response significantly influenced consumers. Specifically, consumers were more likely to have a positive impression of a hotel in crisis, to perceive the hotel as being more socially responsible, and to revisit the hotel when it was highly reputed, accepted responsibility, and was viewed favourably by the media. The extent of the crisis was found to be an insignificant factor.

Practical implications

Hotel managers could incorporate the results of this study into their crisis management plans. As consumer attitudes are explored, the hotel might begin to achieve more effective crisis management strategies.

Originality/value

There is a lack of research investigating hotel crisis management from the customer's perspective. By adopting effective crisis management practices, hotel managers could reduce the negative outcomes of crises such as fires.

Abstract

Purpose

When the clearance oil film of hydrostatic bearing friction pair is in critical lubrication state, the phenomenon of zero flow of local lubricating oil will aggravate the oil film temperature rise, which needs to be solved.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the critical lubrication parameter equation and the oil film temperature rise mathematical model are derived for the new type q1-205 double rectangular cavity hydrostatic bearing. Based on a combination of theoretical analysis, simulation and experimental verification, this paper analyzes the flow characteristics and temperature rise characteristics of the lubricating oil when the hydrostatic bearing is in a critical lubrication state under different operating conditions and finally obtains the critical lubrication state of the oil film.

Findings

This study found that the numerical simulations and the derived formulas agree with the results. When the oil film is in critical lubrication, the cross-section side flow of the oil side is almost zero. The heat cannot be taken away in time, resulting in the local temperature rise of the oil film, which causes serious heat accumulation.

Originality/value

It is concluded that the operating condition parameters corresponding to the critical lubrication state provide a theoretical basis for the selection of actual hydrostatic bearing operating conditions, which is of great scientific significance.
