Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to identify the essential competencies for Industry 4.0 within the manufacturing sector, to prioritise developing them among the workforce in creating a competitive advantage for the organization.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methodology to prioritize competencies. Literature review and expert input guided the identification of competencies, which were ranked by experts for their relevance, through pairwise comparisons.

Findings

Seven competency groups, encompassing 21 sub-groups, were identified as essential for the Industry 4.0 workforce. Digital-technical and industry-specific competencies emerged as the most prominent to be developed on priority, followed by cognitive and business competencies. Despite their smaller representation, core/generic competencies remain the foundation for developing the newer and more specialised competencies.

Research limitations/implications

Recognising the need for empirical studies in early-adopting organisations of Industry 4.0, future research should explore competencies across industries as well as talent development mechanisms, for a nuanced understanding of competency requirements.

Practical implications

The study informs organisations, educators and policymakers guiding workforce training, talent management and development, educational curriculum aligned with the demands of Industry 4.0 to bridge the competency gaps. It can support India’s strategic initiatives like “Make in India” by fostering a digitally ready and competent workforce.

Originality/value

This research provides an empirically validated, structured framework for Industry 4.0 competency prioritization specific to the manufacturing sector in India. It integrates expert inputs with AHP to rank competencies, offering a contextual understanding of competency requirements. It also contributes to human capital theory by advancing competency mapping for Industry 4.0.

Abstract

Purpose

This review aims to investigate the impact of Industry 4.0 on talent development, emphasizing the need to redefine talent for the future of work. By exploring the evolving job requirements, the research seeks to map the competencies essential for success in Industry 4.0 and provide insights for developing talent to stay competitive in the digital era.

Design/methodology/approach

The review uses a comprehensive literature review to systematically trace the evolution of talent and identify the evolving competencies needed for Industry 4.0. Drawing upon established theoretical frameworks of resource-based view, human capital theory and organizational learning theory, this review identifies key factors influencing talent development and Industry 4.0 competencies.

Findings

The findings reveal that the emergence of automated technologies has altered the traditional understanding of jobs and highlights the importance of talent development aligned with Industry 4.0. By investing in developing Industry 4.0 competencies, organizations empower employees to navigate change and remain competitive. Effective talent management strategies contribute to retaining talented individuals and achieving sustainable competitive advantage for organizations.

Practical implications

This study has implications for educational institutions in guiding their curriculum, for organizations to identify the skills and talents necessary to adapt to Industry 4.0 and for the government to inform policy changes that contribute to the global economy and promote a skilled workforce.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the existing literature by comprehensively examining talent in the context of Industry 4.0. It offers a nuanced understanding of the role of talent management in the intersection of talent, competencies and changing technologies in future-proofing organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

Emphasizing the increasing role of talent management (TM) as a global phenomenon and a source of sustainable competitive advantage for organizations, this study aims to present a scoping review of empirical literature on TM, examining the transition of TM from a phenomenon-driven to a theory-driven field.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a scoping review, this study analyzed 200 empirical studies published between 2010 and 2023 on TM.

Findings

The results indicate that TM is extensively studied in nationally operated, large, private, engineering-led organizations in Anglo-Saxon countries. The study highlights the necessity for more empirical studies and statistically robust evidence to establish the effectiveness of TM.

Research limitations/implications

This review intends to provide a vision and direction for future researchers, guiding TM towards becoming a theory-driven field characterized by widely accepted theoretical frameworks and research designs.

Practical implications

The findings of this study may not be generalizable to other types of organizations or cultural contexts, as it primarily focused on large private engineering-led organizations in Anglo-Saxon countries.

Originality/value

This paper offers a comprehensive view of the definitions, contextualization, conceptualization, frameworks, practices, processes and under-explored areas of TM, which are essential for its development as a discipline.
