The purpose of this paper is to examine the value relevance of accounting information in cases of apparent audit failures.

1918

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the value relevance of accounting information in cases of apparent audit failures.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors adopt the bootstrapping technique and compare the value relevance of key accounting information across samples of firms experiencing apparent audit failures with matched non‐audit failure firms.

Findings

Accounting information is found to be less value relevant for firms experiencing apparent audit failures, regardless of auditor reputation.

Research limitations/implications

This study has limitations due to the ex ante research approach adopted. Future research could address this issue by possibly incorporating an “intervening” factor into the model to indicate how the market can differentiate audit failure firms from other firms.

Originality/value

The paper gives support to the assertion that the market appears to rely less on accounting numbers when audit failures occur, even though formal allegations of audit failure may not appear until years after their occurrence. In addition to contributing to value‐relevance research by providing empirical evidence for the market phenomenon around the time of material misstatements, the paper demonstrates an innovative application of bootstrapping to test for differences in R2.

Abstract

This paper presents findings from an ethnographic study of Christian hip hop music performed and practiced in Central Texas. I examine the emerging Christian rap scene through the experiences of members of the local social group known as The 51210 Movement. The 51210 Movement includes various Christian rappers, singers, songwriters, musicians, producers, and sound technicians. Their activities center on the multiple uses of Christian rap within their local communities. The central Texas Christian rap scene is situated within the musically rich city of Austin, the “Live Music Capitol of the World,” and San Antonio, a culturally and religiously diverse city. I focus on how members of The 51210 Movement use Christian rap as a proselytizing and pedagogical tool, how Christian rappers work together to create a self-perpetuating Christian rap scene, and how members of The 51210 Movement negotiate the interplay between the sacred and secular forms of rap to maintain religious authenticity.

Abstract

Granting ‘sanctuary’ in the United States to those fleeing poverty and violence is rooted in a deep history of hospitality and compassion. As we are witnessing a rise in xenophobia accompanied by policies of exclusion, we also see a rising number of ‘sanctuary jurisdictions’ limiting their cooperation with immigration authorities that many communities consider are using extremely harsh and punitive measures to detain and deport irregular migrants. As this chapter will demonstrate, there has been a dramatic increase through ‘immigration federalism’ of the number of these jurisdictions in cities, states and municipalities since the first practices of ‘sanctuary’ in the 1980s as result of the waves of forced migration due to the civil wars in Central America. The author also proposes that those entities granting ‘sanctuary’ to irregular migrants should also apply practices of ‘compassionate migration’ as described in the chapter to expand their protections further and include them in their communities.

Abstract

Puts the decline of the euro’s value following its introduction down to rapid US economic growth and the expansionary policies of the European Central Bank. Contrasts popular UK opposition to joining the euro with business pressure to do so, and suggests that the five stated conditions for entry have almost been met. Looks at economic conditions in other European countries and compares growth rates, unemployment, inflation and capital movements in the UK, USA and the eurozone. Outlines some views on the likely future of the euro and its effects on other currencies; and concludes that the macroeconomy of the eurozone “will bear continued watching”.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to increase the knowledge of nurses assigned to mental health patients, improve the number of patients referred, and to accurately assess the appropriateness of patients referred to psychiatric screening centers.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a quantitative and qualitative design to examine clinical practices of nurses assigned to triage and crisis duties at the selected screening center. A combined experimental, as well as a review of clinical best practices, offered a perspective on trends, chronology, acuity of a mental illness, the number of times a patient is seen on a psychiatric screening unit, and factors leading up to the referral. The study also included an evaluation of an education module to identify best practices for teaching and testing suicidality triage information among nurses.

Findings

Findings were inconclusive in that many hospitals and screening centers in the state of New Jersey exercise their specific/exclusive policies and practices in the management of their populations, despite specific screening laws that are supposed to govern all mental health facilities throughout the state.

Research limitations/implications

Hospital administrators are not always open to scrutiny and investigation of their clinical practices.

Originality/value

There have been limited research studies on the effectiveness of psychiatric screening law and safety of mental health patients in New Jersey.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to use the now‐classic case study of American Red Cross's response to Hurricane Katrina to demonstrate the utility of the best practices in risk and crisis communication as an assessment tool.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative case study methodology is used to provide a thick description of the case based on media analysis and internal and external evaluations. The best practices in risk and crisis communication are then used to assess Red Cross's response efforts.

Findings

This study provides contextual support for the best practices in risk and crisis communication and demonstrates their usefulness in post‐crisis assessment. Lessons learned specific to the case outline the importance of: maintaining flexibility in the crisis plan; developing a crisis communication protocol with partners; considering the affects of response procedures on the emotional and psychological health of crisis victims; and establishing connections with diverse populations and the communities in which the organization works.

Practical implications

As an assessment tool in the post‐crisis stage, the best practices provide an outline for organizations to question whether their planning was sufficient and their strategies and responses met the needs of their stakeholders.

Originality/value

This study provides reason for continuing to develop, study, and apply best practices in risk and crisis communication across organizations and industries. By using the best practices as an assessment tool post‐crisis, organizations can look at each specific practice through the lens of the crisis to stimulate organizational learning.
