To help users understand, prepare for and respond to the threat of online harassment.
Design/methodology/approach
This column provides an introduction to tools and resources on the topic of online harassment. A discussion on the definitions, understandings and library applications to teaching about online harassment are presented from available literature and news articles.
Findings
Various methods of protecting privacy and responding to online harassment are revealed.
Practical implications
An understanding of the importance of the threat of harassment in a variety of online spaces and how to prepare for and respond.

This paper aims to present the use of social media to engage internally with employees and stakeholders, which is becoming a popular option of communication for many business, organizations and libraries.
Design/methodology/approach
The popularity and importance of social media networks like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram cannot be ignored.
Findings
The number of users on these networks continues to grow with 65 per cent of American adults using social networking sites (Perrin, 2015).
Social implications
Social networking tools provide an ease of communication that allows for increased interaction and audience engagement.
Originality/value
Many of the elements that make social networking platforms strong communication tools are now being used internally, allowing employees of these organizations and businesses to collaborate and connect with the same ease as with external audiences.

This paper aims to review the literature on assistive technologies used in libraries and in schools, as portrayed on blogs, wikis and the internet, in the past year to highlight new trends.
Design/methodology/approach
Reports from blogs, internet sources and databases in the past year on the topic were read dealing with practical examples of assistive technologies in libraries and the education sector.
Findings
Assistive technologies are used to aid persons with disabilities, to make them more productive. The technologies can be low- or high-tech, depending on use and information available on new improvements and augmentative technologies being used.
Originality/value
This paper presents an overview of the past year and the current trends in the use of assistive technologies in libraries and schools worldwide.

The use of mobile messaging (MM) or mobile instant messaging has grown in the past few years at astonishing rates.
Design/methodology/approach
This growth has prompted data gatherers and trend forecasters to look at the use of MM apps in different ways than in the past.
Findings
In a 2015 survey, The Pew Research Center asked about the use of MM apps separately from cell phone texting for the first time (Duggan, 2015).
Originality/value
Digital marketing site eMarketer.com published their first ever worldwide forecast for MM in 2015. This forecast report shows 1.4 billion current users of MM apps or 5 per cent of smartphone users accessing an MM app at least once a month. This is a 31.6 per cent increase from the previous year. The forecast predicts that by 2018, there will be two billion users, representing 80 per cent of smartphone users (eMarketer.com, 2015).
