Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to consider the impact on employees of working in hostile environments.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper considers how organisations can best prepare employees for this type of assignment, including pre-assignment training and counselling, as well as on-going post-assignment support and the pivotal role of line managers in trauma management.

Findings

The paper utilises the experiences of two organisations, Action Aid International and Concern Worldwide to outline their approach to supporting employees working in hostile environments.

Originality/value

This paper responds to a growing debate around the impact of extensive exposure to violence, tragedy and natural disasters for employees of a range of international organisations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to outline the way in which internal mediation has been rolled out to support the successful merger of three NHS (National Health Service) Trusts in London.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the success of internal mediation as a method of managing and minimizing conflict in the workplace at other NHS Trusts, Barts Health NHS Trust recognized the potential of internal mediation to monitor, manage and minimize conflict and associated disruption in the workplace. Recognizing the benefits of attracting a multidisciplinary team of mediators and securing the backing of line managers to support the approach has put in place a bid for the funding of training for 140 mediators across the new Trust's five sites.

Findings

The introduction of internal mediation has contributed to a significant decrease in legal expenditure and the number of formal disciplinary cases, which has consequently reduced the time line managers and other employees have had to spend on this type of activity. The strategy has also had an influence – although yet to be calculated – on the environment and culture of the organization. The introduction of tools to respond quickly to conflict situations enables staff to address issues promptly, before they escalate, thereby keeping patient care at the top of everyone's agenda.

Originality/value

The case study presents a clear best practice approach for large organizations or those going through a merger or acquisition that may be considering how to positively manage conflict and dispute resolution in the workplace. It presents cost saving results associated with the introduction of internal mediation and indicates associated organizational benefits, such as the engagement of line managers with the solution.

Abstract

Purpose

This study offers insight on the impact of virtual team projects (VTPs) of varying types (global vs domestic teams, technology vs non-tech projects) on competency and anxiety outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

Paired-sample t-tests and ANOVA tests were performed on student survey responses pre- and post-engagement of different VTPs.

Findings

The results demonstrated positive effects of VTPs on intercultural sensitivity (ISS), computer self-efficacy, perceived ease of use of online learning and COVID-19 anxiety. ISS (“interaction confidence”) improved more for students in the global vs. domestic teams and technology-related outcomes (CSE, PEU and computer anxiety) and ISS (“respect for cultural differences”) improved more for students that participated in tech projects, whereas COVID-19 anxiety lessened more for those that participated in non-tech projects.

Originality/value

The study expands understanding of the Technology Acceptance Model and provides insight into the ISS literature showing that VTPs could be a worthwhile pedagogical approach for improving student competencies and anxiety during times of academic disruption, but that project type can influence these changes.

Abstract

Purpose

This article explores social networks and apps.

Design/methodology/approach

This article provides a survey of the current trends.

Findings

Platforms that are part of the visual Web use images, rather than text, as the primary content of a post. Text may appear, but it is secondary to the image, essentially the opposite of a long blog post where the primary content is text with optional pictures placed for emphasis or enhancement.

Originality/value

Three social networks in particular – Tumblr, Pinterest and Instagram – each gained more than 10 million visitors over the course of the year in part by catering to a desire for more visually appealing content.
