IT IS A COMMONPLACE that there has been, since the second world war, a massive increase in the use of public libraries in Britain. This has been supported by substantial increases in stock, staff and accommodation. These quantitative developments will benefit from the mechanisation of certain library processes and the application of management theory to library organisation and routines. The 1964 Act introduced the principle of government supervision and specific national standards, and the reform of local government structure will also provide a much improved framework for further development.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to synthesize and critically explore the available knowledge about the linkages between compulsory citizenship behavior, knowledge hiding and employee innovative performance through a systematic literature review. It proposes a conceptual framework, highlighting the core relationships between these constructs.
Design/methodology/approach
Using two databases (Dimensions and Scopus), the authors critically examine 93 peer-reviewed publications from 2006 to 2023 to identify the arguments supporting the associations between the studied constructs.
Findings
Through an integrative conceptual model, this study provides insights into the devastating impact of compulsory citizenship behavior on employee innovation performance, further suggesting how knowledge hiding may play a mediating role.
Research limitations/implications
The study's main limitation lies in its conceptual nature. Future research should empirically validate the model to gain richer perspectives into the linkages.
Originality/value
The existing body of literature lacks a comprehensive understanding of the nexus between compulsory citizenship behavior, knowledge hiding and employee innovative performance. This study is a pioneer since it explores the emerging concepts of compulsory citizenship behavior and knowledge hiding and accentuates their presence in the context of innovative performance at the individual level through coercive persuasion theory and cognitive dissonance theory.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper examines the detrimental effects of perceived knowledge hiding (KH) on loneliness and affective commitment within academic settings. It further investigates the influence of conscientiousness as a moderator.
Design/methodology/approach
Using the cross-sectional survey methodology, the proposed moderated mediation model has empirically tested the effect of perceived KH on a sample of 300 students pursuing management education at a premier institute in India.
Findings
The findings reveal that perceived KH affects the affective commitment of students toward the institution via loneliness. Moreover, conscientiousness moderates the mediating role of loneliness in a way that the relationship becomes strong with low levels of conscientiousness.
Research limitations/implications
This study contributes to the literature of KH by empirically investigating its detrimental consequences. It further investigates the impact of personality moderator on the proposed relationships. The discussed framework is an early attempt to understand the phenomenon of KH among students, primarily from the perspective of a knowledge seeker.
Practical implications
Awareness about the ill effects of the knowledge-hiding (KH) behavior of students and understanding the role of personality in this will help administrators in designing effective interventions for curbing the same.
Social implications
Effective control of KH behavior will restrain its ill effects among management students (future workforce), thereby conserving societal resources spent on health and education.
Originality/value
Empirical studies testing the direct and indirect consequences of KH are limited; hence, this study attempts to fill the gap.

Abstract
Purpose
While prior control studies typically focus on organizations with an instrumental approach to corporate sustainability, this study concentrates on organizations with an integrative approach, as the latter is needed to address the grand challenge of sustainable development. As such organizations do not single out the financial objective as the dominant one, they pursue a hybrid mission. This study investigates how a control package can be designed that ensures the persistence of such a hybrid mission.
Design/methodology/approach
A case study is undertaken at a luxury hotel chain in which a financial and an environmental objective are continuously balanced. Self-determination theory is used to substantiate insights into how psychological need-supportive controls can be designed at all organizational levels.
Findings
This study highlights how controls are not only needed to direct staff behaviour towards the environmental objective but also to ensure that staff at all organizational levels prioritize the objectives in such way that the hybrid mission can be sustained. Besides structural differentiation and centralization of decision-making, the case organization designed need-supportive controls to foster staff's internalization of the environmental objective and value as well as of the integrative approach.
Social implications
As the need-supportive socialization process fostered staff's integration of the environmental value, this study highlights the transformational potential of controls.
Originality/value
This study provides a unique account of a control package directing staff behaviour towards the balancing of multiple objectives.

Abstract
There is a growing literature in nonparametric econometrics in the recent two decades. Given the space limitation, it is impossible to survey all the important recent developments in nonparametric econometrics. Therefore, we choose to limit our focus on the following areas. In Section 2, we review the recent developments of nonparametric estimation and testing of regression functions with mixed discrete and continuous covariates. We discuss nonparametric estimation and testing of econometric models for nonstationary data in Section 3. Section 4 is devoted to surveying the literature of nonparametric instrumental variable (IV) models. We review nonparametric estimation of quantile regression models in Section 5. In Sections 2–5, we also point out some open research problems, which might be useful for graduate students to review the important research papers in this field and to search for their own research interests, particularly dissertation topics for doctoral students. Finally, in Section 6 we highlight some important research areas that are not covered in this paper due to space limitation. We plan to write a separate survey paper to discuss some of the omitted topics.

The Kaldor–Hicks (KH) criterion has long been the standard for benefit–cost analyses, but it has also been widely criticized as ignoring equity and, arguably, moral sentiments in general. We suggest the use of an aggregate measure (KHM) instead of KH, where M stands for moral sentiments. KHM simply adds to the traditional KH criterion the requirement that all goods for which there is a willingness to pay or accept count as economic goods. This addition, however, runs up against objections to counting moral sentiments in general and non-paternalistic altruism in particular. We show these concerns are unwarranted and suggest that the KHM criterion is superior to KH because it provides better information.

Purpose
After the identification of a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) at Wuhan, China, a pandemic was widely spread worldwide. In Italy, about 240,000 people were infected because of this virus including 34,721 deaths until the end of June 2020. To control this new pandemic, epidemiologists recommend the enforcement of serious mitigation measures like country lockdown, contact tracing or testing, social distancing and self-isolation.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper presents the most popular epidemic model of susceptible (S), exposed (E), infected (I) and recovered (R) collectively called SEIR to understand the virus spreading among the Italian population.
Findings
Developed SEIR model explains the infection growth across Italy and presents epidemic rates after and before country lockdown. The results demonstrated that follow-up of strict measures such that country lockdown along with high testing is making Italy practically a pandemic-free country.
Originality/value
These models largely help to estimate and understand how an infectious agent spreads in a particular country and how individual factors can affect the dynamics. Further studies like classical SEIR modeling can improve the quality of data and implementation of this modeling could represent a novelty of epidemic models.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine information technology and information systems (IT/IS) technology teaching and learning (T&L) as affected by three key factors of tacit knowledge (TK). These factors are the de-contextualization, the faculty and students’ mental model gap and the intrinsic inability of faculty to teach what they know (i.e. the know-how-know what gap).
Design/methodology/approach
The approach is based on intensive literature review and synthesis of Nonaka’s socialization, externalization, combination and internalization model and other relevant knowledge management (KM) principles applied to understand the effects of mobilization and nurturing of TK in pedagogical activities and strategies.
Findings
This paper demonstrated a holistic view of the role of TK in teaching IT/IS through deep learning activities. It differentiates between faculty and student mental models and the ability of the faculty to convey real-world know-how to students.
Research limitations/implications
This study is by no means comprehensive in exploring the TK contextual dimensions of IT/IS T&L milieus. However, some of the assumptions and factors in this paper are not pertinent to some pedagogical environments.
Practical implications
The activities in this paper introduced new propositions on IT/IS teaching by focusing on TK concepts in light of its challenges. The study could be used by institutes to place emphasis on accommodating TK within effective IT/IS T&L activities.
Originality/value
Drawing on the KM literature and experience, this paper offers new insight into how TK can be innovatively incorporated into a pedagogical landscape.
