Abstract

THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE of the British Library was set up in June 1971 following the acceptance in April 1970 by the government of the recommendations of the Dainton Report on the national libraries and the consequent White Paper (Cmnd 4572) in January 1971. The committee is to plan the organisation of the library and develop and co‐ordinate its policy, and is clearly of the greatest importance, not only to the national libraries but to all libraries through the bibliographic and research services the British Library will undertake. What do we know of the work of this committee, which has now been in existence for a year?

Abstract

Nine European and eleven British librarians of business schools recently met to discuss matters of mutual interest and to increase understanding of one another's problems. This was the third meeting of its kind, the previous meeting having been held at INSEAD, the international business school in Fontainebleau, and at the Centre d'Etudes Industrielles in Geneva. The venue this time was Sussex Place, Regent's Park, which is the fine new home of the London Graduate School of Business Studies. The building was opened by the Queen in November 1970 and has excellent facilities for teaching, a delightful library overlooking the Park, and ample residential accommodation.

Abstract

WE seem to be immediately facing a drive for much more technical education and for many more technical colleges and schools to produce it. In the condition of the world today this is an inevitable, an indispensable, process. The reasons are loudly proclaimed and patent to every librarian, and the library must come strongly, as it always has, into the picture but perhaps now more universally and with greater intensity. Dr. Chandler, who is proceeding at a rare pace to specialize his departments, has created a new local council to unify the information work that has already been done at Liverpool. Every technical book costing over five shillings is bought, and the usual collections of periodicals and other material of technical and industrial interest are being increased and a bulletin of additions is being issued soon after the end of each month. The Technical library is one that combines lending and reference activities, telephone and postal services; in fact all the orthodox activities that have been standard in the larger towns since Glasgow began them in 1916, and possibly new and extended ones. The William Brown Library which was destroyed in Air Raids is being reconstructed and the enlarged Technical Library will be developed in it. This is one city only; every large city reports some increase in the services rendered, for example the Telex service is now available at Manchester. It is essential that public libraries everywhere realize the part they may play; if they do not, the suggestion made recently that the lending of technical books should become an activity of the Technical Colleges may become a reality.

Abstract

The theory of monopoly price was originally formulated by Carl Menger at the inception of the marginalist revolution in 1871 and represented the dominant theoretical approach to monopoly until the 1930s. Despite its impeccable doctrinal pedigree and lengthy dominance, the theory abruptly disappeared from the mainstream neoclassical literature after the Monopolistic Competition Revolution, to be revived and reformulated after World War II by Ludwig von Mises. The present paper describes the theory as it was offered in its most sophisticated pre‐war form by American economist Vernon A. Mund, who published an unjustifiably neglected volume on monopoly theory that appeared in the same year as the classic works by Joan Robinson and Edward Chamberlain. This paper then attempts to draw out the critical implications of Mund’s formulation of the theory for the current neoclassical orthodoxy in monopoly and competition theory, including the elasticity of demand curves facing individual producers under competition, the time perspectives that are most relevant in analyzing the pricing process, the proper role of long‐run equilibrium in this analysis, and the misapplication of the marginal revenue and marginal cost concepts. Finally, the paper suggests a number of reasons why the theory was swept aside in the aftermath of the Chamberlain/Robinson Revolution with almost no resistance from its most prominent exponents.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present reasons why social classifications which use occupations should seek to adopt “specific” approaches which are tailored to the country, time period and gender of the subjects under study.

Design/methodology/approach

The relative motivations for adopting a specific approach to social classifications are discussed and theoretical perspectives on specificity and empirical evidence on the contribution of specific approaches are reviewed. Also the practical costs of implementing specific social classifications are evaluated, and the authors' development of the “GEODE” data service (grid‐enabled occupational data environment), which seeks to assist this process, is discussed.

Findings

Specific approaches make a non‐trivial difference to the conclusions drawn from analyses of occupation‐based social classifications. It is argued that the GEODE service has reduced the practical challenges of implementing specific measures.

Research limitations/implications

There remain conceptual and pragmatic challenges in working with specific occupation‐based social classifications. Non‐specific (“universal”) measures are adequate for many purposes.

Practical implications

The paper argues that there are few excuses for ignoring specific occupation‐based social classifications.

Originality/value

The paper demonstrates that recent technological developments have shifted the balance in the long‐standing debate between universal and specific approaches to occupation‐based social classifications.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss a simulation study for a multi‐product, two‐echelon inventory replenishment system. The paper compares a one‐warehouse N‐retailer replenishment system to a two‐warehouse, N‐retailer system with cost per unit of distribution and delivery lead‐times as the performance measures. The purpose is to demonstrate that under specific circumstances a two warehouse N‐retailer inventory replenishment system provides better customer service without significant changes in the cost.

Design/methodology/approach

Mathematical modeling and simulation methodology is used to test the performance of the proposed two warehouse N‐retailer system and statistical analysis is used to compare the performance of several scenarios.

Findings

The two warehouse replenishment system indeed reduces delivery lead‐times, used as a measure of customer service, under specific conditions such as controllable freight costs.

Research limitations/implications

Caution should be exercised when interpreting these findings as the historical data used was from a single source. The paper did not investigate the effects of variable shipping costs from the manufacturing plant, warehouse and retailer. Future research could also consider multiple second level warehouses.

Practical implications

The findings provide a persuasive argument for manufacturers struggling with performance issues and channel relationships. Moreover, in addition to contributing to efficiency of distribution, two level systems can also enhance ability to adapt to local market conditions and to unexpected demand variations.

Originality/value

The model examined in this paper addressed a specific case for one company. While freight costs and warehousing costs will vary across companies, the cost represented here may be used as a gauge for evaluating systems with cost structures in the vicinity of those for the company represented in this paper. Additionally, the model is amenable to substitution of other firms' cost structures.
