Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the current status and different characteristic features of research data repositories established by BRICS nations in order to understand the research data infrastructure within BRICS countries.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected from the re3data repository (http://www.re3data.org/), focusing specifically on BRICS nations. The data were analyzed to grasp the current status of research data repositories in BRICS countries. The dataset was retrieved on March 2, 2024. A total of 195 Research Data Repositories (RDRs) originating from BRICS countries were identified and selected for comprehensive analysis.

Findings

As of March 2, 2024, re3data.org indexes a total of 3,192 Research Data Repositories (RDRs) worldwide, with BRICS nations contributing 195. China leads among BRICS nations, followed by India, Russia, and Brazil. Scientific and Statistical Formats are the most shared content categories, followed closely by Standard Office Documents. There is notable diversity in the subjects covered by RDRs across BRICS nations. English is the primary interface language, followed by Chinese and Portuguese. “House, tailor-made” software is widely used for creating RDRs, followed by Dataverse and DSpace. Fourteen metadata standards are found, with Dublin Core metadata being the most prevalent, followed by the DataCite Metadata Scheme. Most repositories are disciplinary, followed by institutional ones. Most repositories specify data upload types, with “restricted” being the most common, followed by closed types. Open access is predominant in data access, followed by restricted access and embargo periods, while a small number restrict access entirely.

Originality/value

The present study will help gauge the strengths and weaknesses of the RDRs of BRICS nations and also learn how open these RDRs are for data access and upload provisions. The study contributes to a broader comprehension of the accessibility and usability of research data within the BRICS community, ultimately fostering greater transparency, collaboration, and knowledge dissemination within the scientific community, thus fostering greater innovation and advancement in research endeavors. The study provides a nuanced understanding of the research data infrastructure within BRICS nations, highlighting key trends, strengths, and areas for potential improvement.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to know whether the authors’ productivity pattern of library and information science (LIS) open access journals adheres to Lotka’s inverse square law of scientific productivity. Since the law was introduced, it has been tested in various fields of knowledge, and results have varied. This study has closely followed Lotka’s inverse square law in the field of LIS open access journals to find a factual result and set a baseline for future studies on author productivity of LIS open access journals.

Design/methodology/approach

The publication data of selected ten LIS open access journals pertain to authorship, citations were downloaded from the Scopus database and analysed using bibliometric indicators like authorship pattern, collaborative index (CI), degree of collaboration (DC), collaborative coefficient (CC) and citation counts. This study has applied Lotka’s inverse square law to assess authors’ productivity pattern of LIS open access journals and further Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) goodness-of-fit test applied for testing of observed and expected author productivity data.

Findings

Inferences were drawn for the set objectives on authorship pattern, collaboration trend and authors’ productivity pattern of LIS open access journals covered in this study. The single authorship pattern is dominant in LIS open access journals covered in this study. The CI, DC and CC are found to be 1.95, 0.47 and 0.29, respectively. The expected values as per Lotka’s law (n = −2) significantly vary from the observed values as per the chi-square test and K-S goodness-of-fit test. Hence, this study does not adhere to Lotka’s inverse square law of scientific productivity.

Practical implications

Researchers may find an idea about the authors’ productivity patterns of LIS open access journals. This study has used the K-S goodness-of-fit test and the chi-square test to validate the authors’ productivity data. The inferences found out from this study will be a baseline for future research on author productivity of LIS open access journals.

Originality/value

This study is significant from the viewpoint of the growing research on open access journals in the field of LIS and to identify the authorship pattern, collaboration trend and author productivity pattern of such journals.

Abstract

Purpose

Mucormycosis has evolved as a post-COVID-19 complication globally, especially in India. The research on fungus has been very primitive, and many scientific publications have been discovered. The current COVID-19 pandemic needs further investigation into this unusual fungal infection. This review study aims to provide a pen-picture to researchers, science policymakers and scientists about different bibliometric indicators related to the research literature on mucormycosis.

Design/methodology/approach

The quantitative research was conducted using the established procedure of bibliometric investigation on data collected from Scopus from 2011 to 2020 using a validated search query. The search query consisted of keywords “Mucormycosis” or “Mucormycoses” or “Mucormycose” or “Mucorales Infection” or “Mucorales Infections” or “Black Fungus Infection” or “Black Fungus Infections” or “Zygomycosis” in the “Title-Keyword-Abstract” search option for data extraction. The analysis of data is performed using MS-Excel. Mapping was done with state-of-the-art visualization tools Biblioshiny and VOSviewer, using bibliometric indicators as units of analysis.

Findings

The analysis reveals that the first publication on this topic was reported from 1923 onwards. In total, 9,423 authors contributed 1,896 papers with 11,437 collaborated authors, documents per author are 0.201, authors per document are 4.97 and co-authors per document are 6.03. Total records were published in 779 journals in the English language from 75 countries globally. Mucormycosis literature is mostly open access, with 1,210 publications available via different open access routes. The highest number of articles (204) published in the journal “Mycoses” with 1,333 authors received 4,875 cited references, and the h-index has 24. The growth of publications is exponential, as depicted by the Price Law. The USA has recorded a maximum number of publications at both country and institutional levels compared to the other nations. There has been extensive research on mucormycosis before the outbreak as a post-COVID complication, as indicated by the highest number of publications in 2019.

Practical implications

The research hot spots have altered from “Mucormycosis,” “fungi,” “Zygomycosis” and “Drug efficacy”, “Drug Safety” to “Microbiology,” “Pathology,” “nucleotide sequence,” “surgical debridement” which indicates that potential area of research in the near future will be concerned with more extensive research in mucormycosis to develop standard treatment procedures to fight this infection. The quantity of scientific publications has also increased over time. The research and health community are called upon to join forces to activate existing knowledge, generate new insights and develop decision-supporting tools for health authorities in different nations to leverage vaccination in its transformational role toward successfully attaining nil cases of COVID-19.

Originality/value

The analysis of collaboration, findings, the research networks and visualization makes this study novel and separates from traditional metrics analysis. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this work is original, and no similar studies have been found with the objectives included here.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the use of plagiarism-checking software and current ethical guidelines in sport management journals, raising awareness of ethical concerns and potential risks of artificial intelligence (AI) applications is necessary. This paper discusses how AI affects ethical research and publishing and provides guidelines for sport management scholars to ensure quality and integrity of their research.

Design/methodology/approach

A comprehensive review and critical analysis of literature was performed to evaluate research ethics, potential risks, and guiding principles for the use of AI in research.

Findings

Ethical research guidelines for quantitative sport management research were proposed. The guidelines encompass seven principles for the proper use of AI and ethical conduct specific to the research methods, data analysis, and results, which would be challenging for AI to accurately replicate.

Originality/value

This study provides an original contribution to the field of sport management because numerous questions concerning ethics and AI have not been addressed until now. The guidelines are suitable for use by sport management scholars, concerning the accuracy, validity, and quality of research while mitigating ethical risks in AI-generated content.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study examines the features and services of four research data repositories (RDRs): Dataverse, Dryad, Zenodo and Figshare. The study explores whether these RDRs adhere to the FAIR principles and suggests the features and services that need to be added to enhance their functionality.

Design/methodology/approach

An online survey was conducted to identify the features of four popular RDRs. The study evaluates the features of four popular RDRs using the specially designed checklist method based on FAIR principles. The checklist is based on 11 construct progressions used to evaluate the features and services of four popular RDRs. The final checklist contains 11 constructs with 199 check spots.

Findings

Figshare has attained the highest features for findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability. It is identified that Figshare, with 116 (58.3%) scored the highest points and ranked no 1. It has also been found that Figshare recorded the highest features in 6 constructs out of the 11. Dataverse, with 90 (45.2%) features, ranked 2nd; Zenodo, with 86 (43.2%), ranked 3rd. The lowest features are found in Dryad, with 85 (42.7%). Furthermore, the study found that all four popular RDRs have poor features relating to “research data access metrics” features 23.3%, “output, data license and other advanced features” 22.6%. The very less features recorded in the category “services in RDRs” are 15.9%. Therefore, the features of these three constructs framed under FAIR need to be upgraded to improve the functionalities of the four popular RDRs.

Practical implications

The findings of the study are useful for researchers in choosing the appropriate RDR for accessing and sharing data and can be used by data scientists, librarians and policymakers in starting the research data management services in academic and research institutions. Furthermore, the study can also help impart research data literacy instructions to researchers and faculty members.

Originality/value

This study has prepared a special checklist based on FAIR principles to evaluate the features and services of RDRs. No prior study has been conducted to explore the features of popular RDRs and their compliance with FAIR principles based on the checklist method.

Purpose

Bothorship – “bot authorship”, or the use of artificial intelligence tools to support writing activities - has transformed publishing in the few years since the emergence of ChatGPT in late 2022. The bane of the publisher’s existence, but a boon for writers, these tools support enhanced writing quality and reduce the amount of time and effort needed to turn research findings into an acceptable manuscript. This paper aims to discuss some of the key aspects of Bothorship as they have emerged in the past two years.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper explores recent publications and discourse surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) contributions to scholarly publications.

Findings

While there are substantial downsides to AI use in scholarly communications, there are also tremendous benefits. Bothorship can level the playing field for non-native English speakers having to navigate an arena (scholarly publishing) where English is the lingua franca.

Originality/value

This paper discusses key issues related to bothorship and AI contributions to publications. It reviews and presents a perspective on the future of AI authorship and copyediting for manuscripts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to draw a comparison of the Web traffic ranking, usage and popularity of websites of databases of reputed publishers, namely, ScienceDirect and Emerald Insight, that provide access on subscription basis with Sci-Hub, on the basis of data obtained from Alexa databank (www.alexa.com). Sci-Hub is a website that provides pirated open-access to the research literature, where piracy, according to The Economic Times (2020), refers to the unauthorized duplication of copyrighted content.

Design/methodology/approach

Under present study, the quantitative study of the collected data was carried out with help of descriptive research methodology. The Alexa databank was singled out as the source of data. This study crawled through Alexa databank on 01.12.2019 and collected relevant data regarding Sci-Hub, ScienceDirect and Emerald Insight using the search terms Sci-hub.tw, Sciencedirect.com and Emeraldinsight.com sequentially. Different criteria were taken into consideration, which include global traffic rank, the average number of page views per user, time taken for uploading, bounce rate, percentage of users, the number of in-links and daily time spent on the site.

Findings

The results of this study showed that ScienceDirect has the highest traffic rank and in-linking sites among the surveyed databases. But highest number of page visits were recorded for Sci-Hub with fastest downloading speed. It has also been observed that the users spent less time on ScienceDirect and Emerald Insight as compared to Sci-Hub. This study further observed that Sci-Hub has the lowest bounce rate. Users from both the developing and developed economies use the Sci-Hub, though the highest number of visitors belongs to the developing nations.

Originality/value

This study provides an overview of the performance of toll-based publishing databases with pirated database based on different criteria through World Wide Web. Though, this study in no way supports or endorses the unauthorized and illegal access to knowledge, but such data helps in depicting and analyzing how much a particular database is accessed by its users all over the globe and also determines and illustrates the time spent by users while accessing a specific database, thus, providing the user preferences in information seeking activities. This study provides an overall view of adoption of open resources.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to investigate the behavior of continuous hydromagnetic convective fluid within a porous medium. In this study, all fluid properties are assumed to remain constant, except for viscosity, which varies inversely with temperature. Additionally, the fluid experiences Newtonian heating, and the effects of the Dufour and Soret phenomena are considered. The study also examines how controlling constants affect the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles.

Design/methodology/approach

The model equations are transformed to ordinary differential equations adopting similarity transformations. The resulting coupled nonlinear differential equations are then solved numerically using the shooting method combined with the fourth order Runge-Kutta (RK-4) technique. The effects of varying parameters on the flow are presented through graphs and tables.

Findings

The consequences of supervising constants on the flow are encapsulated in charts. The findings are that the Biot number is crucial in determining the temperature distribution within a solid during transient heat transfer; a reduction in the velocity chart is experienced as the size of suction grows; the temperature distribution over the upright heated plate escalates dramatically as Dufour(Du) shot up; and a rise in fluid velocity as the Soret parameter increases. The current results are annotated in sketches for better understanding. Findings are authenticated in contrast with published works. Finally, viscosity dependent on temperature and Newtonian heating are crucial in determining the flow characteristics, heat transfer efficiency, pressure drop, flow stability and overall performance of fluid systems. Understanding and accounting for these variations are essential for the optimal design and operation of engineering applications involving fluids.

Originality/value

The peculiarity of the research is perusal of exploration of viscosity dependent on temperature and Newtonian heating above steady hydromagnetic convective flow in a percolating environment: Soret, Dufour consequences. To the best of authors’ understanding, problem like this has not been considered. The findings in this work will give a useful information to scientists and engineers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of Arrhenius kinetics on hydromagnetic free convection of an electrically conducting fluid flowing past a vertically stretched sheet maintained at a constant temperature, considering viscous dissipation. In this study, the understanding of the Biot number is essential for comprehending and enhancing heat transfer processes in a flow. Mastering this concept is crucial for the efficient design and management of various industrial and natural systems. The effect of Newtonian heating is accurately addressed by adjusting the traditional temperature boundary condition.

Design/methodology/approach

The presiding inconsistent Partial differential equations are contrasted to ordinary differential equations by similitude changes and the solutions are completed numerically by fourth-order Runge-Kutta (RK-4) and shooting procedures. Tables and graphs feature vividly in annotating the outcomes of changing parameters on the flow.

Findings

Notably, the Biot number significantly impacts temperature gradients and distribution, which subsequently affect the flow’s velocity and thermal characteristics; that is, velocity and temperature contours increase directly to an upsurge in the Biot number. Contrasting with existing work, a perfect harmony is experienced. Arrhenius kinetics are essential for predicting and managing fluid flow behaviour in systems where reactions are sensitive to temperature. Grasping this relationship helps engineers and scientists enhance process efficiency, ensure safety and optimize fluid-based systems. Similarly, Newtonian heating significantly impacts fluid flow by affecting temperature distribution, viscosity, buoyancy-driven flows and flow stability. Mastering the control of this heating process is vital in both natural and engineered fluid systems. Technical applications of this research include variation cooling and atomic power generation refrigeration.

Originality/value

The distinguishing quality of this research lies in the scrutiny of Arrhenius steady hydromagnetic heat transfer to natural convection flow in a stretching upright sheet: viscous dissipation and Newtonian heating. To best of the authors’ understanding, a problem like this has not been considered. The findings in this work will give useful information to scientists and engineers.

By market capitalisation, Bitcoin, which debuted in 2009, is the biggest cryptocurrency globally. A decentralised ledger system called blockchain is used in the creation, distribution, trading, and storage of Bitcoin, with the original goal being to address the shortcomings of fiat currency. This chapter highlights potential dangers and legal concerns when Bitcoin interacts with the actual economy and the traditional financial system. Besides, the details also discuss the platform’s design principles and attributes for a non-technical readership. When assessing its transactional potential, some recognise its potential for speculation, while others are doubtful of its admirable intent. The write-up also explores the potential of the adoption of cryptocurrencies in Southeast Asia due to the vast adoption of Bitcoins in countries such as Vietnam and the Philippines following the establishment of cryptocurrency technology and e-commerce. In addition, rankings of the cryptocurrency and legal stance from each country in Southeast Asia were exhibited as the solid foundation of cryptocurrencies existent for transaction purposes. The rise of central bank digital currencies (CBDC) and the future directions of Bitcoins were also highlighted in this write-up to spur the debate on whether cryptocurrency remains a fad of sensation or is legalised as the medium of exchange in an ever-growing digital world of commerce.
