Abstract

Purpose

Modeling of material behavior by physically or microstructure-based models helps in understanding the relationships between its properties and microstructure. However, the majority of the numerical investigations on the prediction of the deformation behavior of AA2024 alloy are limited to the use of phenomenological or empirical constitutive models, which fail to take into account the actual microscopic-level mechanisms (i.e. crystallographic slip) causing plastic deformation. In order to achieve accurate predictions, the microstructure-based constitutive models involving the underlying physical deformation mechanisms are more reliable. Therefore, the aim of this work is to predict the mechanical response of AA2024-T3 alloy subjected to uniaxial tension at different strain rates, using a dislocation density-based crystal plasticity model in conjunction with computational homogenization.

Design/methodology/approach

A dislocation density-based crystal plasticity (CP) model along with computational homogenization is presented here for predicting the mechanical behavior of aluminium alloy AA2024-T3 under uniaxial tension at different strain rates. A representative volume element (RVE) containing 400 grains subjected to periodic boundary conditions has been used for simulations. The effect of mesh discretization on the mechanical response is investigated by considering different meshing resolutions for the RVE. Material parameters of the CP model have been calibrated by fitting the experimental data. Along with the CP model, Johnson–Cook (JC) model is also used for examining the stress-strain behavior of the alloy at various strain rates. Validation of the predictions of CP and JC models is done with the experimental results where the CP model has more accurately captured the deformation behavior of the aluminium alloy.

Findings

The CP model is able to predict the mechanical response of AA2024-T3 alloy over a wide range of strain rates with a single set of material parameters. Furthermore, it is observed that the inhomogeneity in stress-strain fields at the grain level is linked to both the orientation of the grains as well as their interactions with one another. The flow and hardening rule parameters influencing the stress-strain curve and capturing the strain rate dependency are also identified.

Originality/value

Computational homogenization-based CP modeling and simulation of deformation behavior of polycrystalline alloy AA2024-T3 alloy at various strain rates is not available in the literature. Therefore, the present computational homogenization-based CP model can be used for predicting the deformation behavior of AA2024-T3 alloy more accurately at both micro and macro scales, under different strain rates.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to assess the effectiveness of Hall currents and power-law slip condition on the hydromagnetic convective flow of an electrically conducting power-law fluid over an exponentially stretching sheet under the effect of a strong variable magnetic field and thermal radiation. Flow formation is developed using the rheological expression of a power-law fluid.

Design/methodology/approach

The nonlinear partial differential equations describing the flow are transformed into the nonlinear ordinary differential equations by employing the local similarity transformations and then solved numerically by an effective numerical approach, namely, fourth-order Runge–Kutta integration scheme, along with the shooting iteration technique. The numerical solution is computed for different parameters by using the computational software MATLAB bvp4c. The bvp4c function uses the finite difference code as the default. This method is a fourth-order collocation method. The impacts of thermophysical parameters on velocity and temperature distributions, skin friction coefficients and Nusselt number in the boundary layer regime are exhibited through graphs and tables and deliberated with proper physical justification.

Findings

Our investigation conveys that Hall current has an enhancing behavior on velocity profiles and reduces skin friction coefficients. An increase in the power-law index is observed to deplete velocity and temperature evolution. The temperature for the pseudo-plastic (shear-thinning) fluid is relatively higher than the corresponding temperature of the dilatant (shear-thickening) fluid. The streamlines are more distorted and have low intensity near the surface of the sheet for the dilatant fluid than the pseudo-plastic fluid.

Social implications

The study is pertinent to the expulsion of polymer sheet and photographic films, hydrometallurgical industry, electrically conducting polymer dynamics, magnetic material processing, solutions and melts of polymer processing, purification of molten metals from nonmetallic. The results obtained in this work can be relevant in fluid mechanics and heat transfer applications.

Originality/value

The present problem has, to the authors' knowledge, not communicated thus far in the scientific literature. A comparative study with the published works is conducted to verify the accuracy of the present study. The results obtained in this analysis are significant in providing the standards for validating the accuracies of some numerical or empirical methods.

Abstract

Purpose

The prediction model to estimate the stability of a rotor-bearing system is established, which can predict the stability of gas bearings by applying Routh–Hurwitz stability criterion. This paper aims to provide the theoretical foundation for controlling actively the bearing running stiffness and damping and stemming the instability of a gas film.

Design/methodology/approach

The nonlinear dynamic lubrication analysis mathematical model of spherical hybrid gas bearings is established. Perturbation control equation is derived by the partial derivative method. The finite difference method is used to discrete the perturbation control equation in generalized coordinate system, and the difference expression of perturbation pressure is derived. The relational expression which involves the relationship between the dynamic characteristic coefficients of HSGHGB systems and perturbation pressure is deduced. So, the transient perturbation pressure distribution of a three-dimensional micro gas film, nonlinear gas film force, dynamic stiffness and dynamic damping coefficients of bearings are numerically computed using VC++6.0 programs.

Findings

The results show that the influence of supply pressure, speed and eccentricity on the dynamic characteristics of bearings is significant.

Originality/value

The influence law of supply pressure, speed and eccentricity ratio on the dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients of HSGHGB systems is researched. The prediction model to estimate the stability of rotor-bearing system is established, which can predict the stability of gas bearings by applying the Routh–Hurwitz stability criterion.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the influences of both the number and locations of entry holes on the static and dynamic characteristics of a rigid rotor supported by two double‐rows, inherently compensated aerostatic bearings.

Design/methodology/approach

The air is assumed to be perfect gas undergoing the adiabatic process and passing through entry holes into the bearing clearance. Air film in the clearance is governed by Reynolds equation including the coupled effects of wedge due to rotor rotation and squeezed film due to rotor oscillation.

Findings

The method is used to analyze Reynolds equation, which is then solved by the finite difference method and numerical integration to yield static and dynamic characteristics of air film. The equation of motion of the rotor‐bearing system is obtained by using the perturbation method and the eigensolution method is used to determine the stability threshold and critical whirl ratio.

Originality/value

The paper considers the eccentricity, rotor speed, and restriction parameter in the analysis of the whirl instability of the rotor‐aerostatic bearing system for the comparisons between various designs in the number and locations of entry holes of aerostatic bearings.

Abstract

Investigates rotation effects on hybrid plain journal bearings with various feeding mechanisms, i.e. orifice, capillary and porous feedings. Employs the numerical method of the finite difference to solve Reynolds equations. Shows that higher speed of rotation induces greater hydrodynamic load capacity, especially with an eccentricity ratio ε > 0.85. The porous and orifice feedings also result in higher load capacity than orifice and capillary feedings when the rotation speeds increase. Also analyses the multi‐array of hole‐entry of orifice and capillary feedings and the results show that the bearings with more arrays of feedings produce higher load capacity at low speed. However, the bearings with fewer arrays of feedings produce higher load capacity at high speeds. In other words, the transition from the hydrostatic to hydrodynamic load capacity of the bearing is significant to hybrid plain journal bearings.

Abstract

Purpose

Information seeking can be used to make sense of a situation or solve a problem. Information seeking can be considered a coping strategy when facing illness, crisis or other life-changing events. Cancer is a globally occurring, life-threatening disease, and this review aims to provide an overview of the existing literature on the active information seeking behaviour of cancer patients specifically focussing on how active information seeking serves as a coping strategy.

Design/methodology/approach

This study adheres to current guidelines for conducting systematic reviews and consequently, thorough literature searches were conducted in four databases: Medline, Embase, CINAHL and Scopus which resulted in 7,179 publications. Following a careful screening process, this systematic review identifies 14 studies on the use of information seeking to cope with cancer.

Findings

The included studies consist of both qualitative and quantitative approaches to analysing the use of information seeking to cope with cancer. The included studies have focussed primarily on demographic factors, the impact of affect, information needs, sources and coping strategies.

Research limitations/implications

A number of research gaps within library and information science are identified. Bringing research in this field into information science could allow for a greater understanding of information literacy, the use of existing information and the process of information searching when using information seeking to cope with serious illness.

Originality/value

This systematic review focusses on how information seeking serves as a coping strategy for cancer patients and provides an overview of the recent literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine the structure of nilpotent (n+6)-dimensional n-Lie algebras of class 2 when n4.

Design/methodology/approach

By dividing a nilpotent (n+6)-dimensional n-Lie algebra of class 2 by a central element, the authors arrive to a nilpotent (n+5) dimensional n-Lie algebra of class 2. Given that the authors have the structure of nilpotent (n+5)-dimensional n-Lie algebras of class 2, the authors have access to the structure of the desired algebras.

Findings

In this paper, for each n4, the authors have found 24 nilpotent (n+6) dimensional n-Lie algebras of class 2. Of these, 15 are non-split algebras and the nine remaining algebras are written as direct additions of n-Lie algebras of low-dimension and abelian n-Lie algebras.

Originality/value

This classification of n-Lie algebras provides a complete understanding of these algebras that are used in algebraic studies.

The concept and practice of e-services has become essential in business transactions. Yet there are still many organizations that have not developed e-services optimally. This is especially relevant in the context of Indonesian Airline companies. Therefore, many airline customers in Indonesia are still in doubt about it, or even do not use it. To fill this gap, this study attempts to develop a model for e-services adoption and empirically examines the factors influencing the airlines customers in Indonesia in using e-services offered by the Indonesian airline companies. Taking six Indonesian airline companies as a case example, the study investigated the antecedents of e-services usage of Indonesian airlines. This study further examined the impacts of motivation on customers in using e-services in the Indonesian context. Another important aim of this study was to investigate how ages, experiences and geographical areas moderate effects of e-services usage.

The study adopts a positivist research paradigm with a two-phase sequential mixed method design involving qualitative and quantitative approaches. An initial research model was first developed based on an extensive literature review, by combining acceptance and use of information technology theories, expectancy theory and the inter-organizational system motivation models. A qualitative field study via semi-structured interviews was then conducted to explore the present state among 15 respondents. The results of the interviews were analysed using content analysis yielding the final model of e-services usage. Eighteen antecedent factors hypotheses and three moderating factors hypotheses and 52-item questionnaire were developed. A focus group discussion of five respondents and a pilot study of 59 respondents resulted in final version of the questionnaire.

In the second phase, the main survey was conducted nationally to collect the research data among Indonesian airline customers who had already used Indonesian airline e-services. A total of 819 valid questionnaires were obtained. The data was then analysed using a partial least square (PLS) based structural equation modelling (SEM) technique to produce the contributions of links in the e-services model (22% of all the variances in e-services usage, 37.8% in intention to use, 46.6% in motivation, 39.2% in outcome expectancy, and 37.7% in effort expectancy). Meanwhile, path coefficients and t-values demonstrated various different influences of antecedent factors towards e-services usage. Additionally, a multi-group analysis based on PLS is employed with mixed results. In the final findings, 14 hypotheses were supported and 7 hypotheses were not supported.

The major findings of this study have confirmed that motivation has the strongest contribution in e-services usage. In addition, motivation affects e-services usage both directly and indirectly through intention-to-use. This study provides contributions to the existing knowledge of e-services models, and practical applications of IT usage. Most importantly, an understanding of antecedents of e-services adoption will provide guidelines for stakeholders in developing better e-services and strategies in order to promote and encourage more customers to use e-services. Finally, the accomplishment of this study can be expanded through possible adaptations in other industries and other geographical contexts.
