Abstract

Purpose

Advances in digital technologies and the growing number of touch points have had a significant impact on the shopping behaviour of omnichannel customers. Several research papers have explored different facets of omnichannel, but only a few have thoroughly explored the literature on showrooming and webrooming simultaneously. This paper aims to identify the key groups of antecedents influencing customer buying behaviour in omnichannel, under the influence of digital technologies, with a particular focus on showrooming and webrooming.

Design/methodology/approach

Our study conducted a systematic literature review to identify the factors influencing customers’ buying behaviour in omnichannel, which have been the subject of academic discussion over the last decade. We finalized 149 articles for the thematic analysis and identified three groups of antecedents: channel-related, product-related and consumer-related with their subgroups.

Findings

Under channel-related antecedents, cost and perceived benefits, search convenience, need for interaction and situational circumstances have been identified as major attributes. The expressiveness of the product, product demonstration and search and experienced products have been identified under product-related antecedents, followed by price consciousness, past experiences, perceived risks and shopping motivations as leading attributes under consumer-related antecedents. The study revealed the multifaceted influence of digital technologies on omnichannel buying behaviour. Digital technologies are shaping the antecedents related to channels, products and consumers. Digital technologies simultaneously mediate between antecedents and the selection of a specific path within an omnichannel environment. Showrooming and webrooming should no longer be seen as general concepts. The rise of digital technologies has led to the development of new consumer journey patterns and the blurring of distinctions between showrooming and webrooming. A conceptual framework has been proposed to understand consumers' omnichannel behaviour, having considered the identified antecedents and the role of digital technologies.

Practical implications

This study advances the academic understanding of consumer behaviour in omnichannel under the influence of digital technologies and provides important implications for omnichannel management. With the advancement of digital technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality, retailers should implement channel integration strategies to bridge the gap between online and offline channels, providing a memorable shopping experience for omnichannel customers.

Originality/value

This study is unique because it identifies and analyses the antecedents of consumer behaviour in omnichannel settings under the influence of digital technologies. It also uncovers new potential combinations of showrooming and webrooming patterns. The proposed framework can help retailers in their future planning of omnichannel strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the relationship between users’ perceived barriers to using virtual and augmented reality technology from stakeholders, identifying perspectives and gaps regarding technology acceptance.

Design/methodology/approach

The Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory method is useful for quantitatively evaluating the causal relationship between factors. Combining this method with the grey approach ensures greater accuracy even with limited information. A Scoping Review was conducted to identify the barriers, and data were extracted from a questionnaire administered to experts in the field.

Findings

Seven diverse barriers were identified by users, and cause-and-effect relationships were estimated. The results indicate three primary causal barriers and three highly dependent barriers. One of the identified barriers is not relevant in this model.

Originality/value

Virtual and augmented reality technologies have been gaining popularity since 2018, allowing users to interact with a virtual environment. These technologies are primarily used in training and education areas. However, due to the innovative nature of the topic, there are a small number of studies on technology acceptance, especially in the Brazilian context. Therefore, this paper contributes to the literature and assists in applying technologies in industries.

Abstract

This paper presents a new approach for combining the quantitative and qualitative objectives to resolve the facility layout problem. In previous studies, there are various approaches to generate solutions for the facility layout problem. Suboptimal solutions need to be considered for large layout problems since optimal algorithms are computationally infeasible. Therefore, it is important to set criteria to measure the quality of various solutions. In this paper, a new measure of solution quality, the probability of superiority, is offered for the determination of the probability that one layout is better than the others. An example is presented to illustrate our proposed approach.

Abstract

Purpose

With enhanced use of humanoids in demanding sectors of industrial automation and smart manufacturing, navigation and path planning of humanoid forms have become the centre of attraction for robotics practitioners. This paper aims to focus on the development and implementation of a hybrid intelligent methodology to generate an optimal path for humanoid robots using regression analysis, adaptive particle swarm optimization and adaptive ant colony optimization techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

Sensory information regarding obstacle distances are fed to the regression controller, and an interim turning angle is obtained as the initial output. Adaptive particle swarm optimization technique is used to tune the governing parameter of adaptive ant colony optimization technique. The final output is generated by using the initial output of regression controller and tuned parameter from adaptive particle swarm optimization as inputs to the adaptive ant colony optimization technique along with other regular inputs. The final turning angle calculated from the hybrid controller is subsequently used by the humanoids to negotiate with obstacles present in the environment.

Findings

As the current investigation deals with the navigational analysis of single as well as multiple humanoids, a Petri-Net model has been combined with the proposed hybrid controller to avoid inter-collision that may happen in navigation of multiple humanoids. The hybridized controller is tested in simulation and experimental platforms with comparison of navigational parameters. The results obtained from both the platforms are found to be in coherence with each other. Finally, an assessment of the current technique with other existing navigational model reveals a performance improvement.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed hybrid controller provides satisfactory results for navigational analysis of single as well as multiple humanoids. However, the developed hybrid scheme can also be attempted with use of other smart algorithms.

Practical implications

Humanoid navigation is the present talk of the town, as its use is widespread to multiple sectors such as industrial automation, medical assistance, manufacturing sectors and entertainment. It can also be used in space and defence applications.

Social implications

This approach towards path planning can be very much helpful for navigating multiple forms of humanoids to assist in daily life needs of older adults and can also be a friendly tool for children.

Originality/value

Humanoid navigation has always been tricky and challenging. In the current work, a novel hybrid methodology of navigational analysis has been proposed for single and multiple humanoid robots, which is rarely reported in the existing literature. The developed navigational plan is verified through testing in simulation and experimental platforms. The results obtained from both the platforms are assessed against each other in terms of selected navigational parameters with observation of minimal error limits and close agreement. Finally, the proposed hybrid scheme is also evaluated against other existing navigational models, and significant performance improvements have been observed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze preferred supplier enablers (PSEs) and measure the interdependencies among themselves for enhancing preferred supplier relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

In the current study, an approach has been developed in which the significance of various PSEs was determined by applying Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) and the prominent PSEs were screened out through Pareto analysis. Also, the interdependence among the prominent PSEs was measured by applying the Fuzzy Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory method in order to select the right PSEs in ascribing the Preferred Supplier Status. Finally, the weakest relationships among the PSEs were confirmed by applying the student’s t-test and then an impact relationship map of PSEs was developed.

Findings

The strength of relationships among the PSEs, grouping of PSEs into causes and effects on a causal diagram and a concise impact relationship map of PSEs were determined. Further, the PSEs that a manufacturer must primarily focus and monitor were also obtained.

Research limitations/implications

The study was conducted in an Indian electronic manufacturing environment. Therefore, the results obtained would be more relevant to the high end technology product manufacturers operating in the developing countries.

Practical implications

From the current study, a manufacturer can alleviate, favorably associate and integrate with the good suppliers and then eventually establish a strong supply base.

Originality/value

Manufacturers are looking for the closer and favored relationships by bringing in the concept of preferred supplier while dealing with their key suppliers. Thus, the results obtained from the current study would be of great assistance to a manufacturer in gaining an extra cutting-edge and, in turn, tackling the increased competitive pressures and reduced availability of resources.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of the present work is to ascertain the failure modes under different loading speeds along with change in percentage of constituents of FRP composites.

Design/methodology/approach

This involves experimental investigation of FRP composites with woven roving fibers and matrix. Different types of composites, i.e. glass: epoxy, glass: polyester and (carbon+glass): epoxy are used in the investigation with change in percentage of constituents. The variability of fiber content of the composite is in the range of 0.55‐0.65 weight fractions. The matrix dominated property, like inter laminar shear strength (ILSS) has been studied by three point bend test using INSTRON 1195 material testing machine with increasing five cross head velocities.

Findings

The variation of ILSS of laminates of FRP composites is significant for low loading speed and is not so prominent for high speed. The variation of ILSS are observed to be dependent on the type and amount of constituents present in the composites. The laminates with carbon fiber shows higher ILSS than that of glass fiber composites. The laminates with epoxy matrix shows higher ILSS than polyester matrix composites for the same fiber. There is no significant variation of ILSS beyond loading speed 200 mm/min and this can be used for specifications of testing. Matrix resins such as polyester and epoxy are known to be highly rate sensitive. Carbon fiber are relatively rate independent and E‐glass fibers are rate sensitive. Woven roving carbon glass fiber reinforced polymer shows small rate dependence and woven roving glass fiber reinforced polymer shows significant rate sensitivity.

Originality/value

The findings are based on original experimental investigations in the laboratories of the institute and can be used for characterization of composites.

Artificial intelligence and augmented reality are two key tools gaining importance in the digital era due to their wide range of applications in different fields and sectors. Industry 4.0 lays emphasis principally on the technology used to help the business remain competitive and sustainable. Sustainable development goals are another important objective of the UN which has laid responsibility for every business to support addressing the global challenges. Purpose: This chapter essentially aims to present the standpoint of artificial intelligence and augmented reality in meeting the sustainability perspective of organizations. Information about the study is gathered through secondary approaches, critically reviewing published literature, scientific reports, and statistical data accessible through business reports, and corporate websites. Further analyzed to present the perspectives of the authors in the study. Globally artificial intelligence market size is predicted to reach $190 billion by 2025, while the funding for startups doubled during the period 2011–2020 globally. The investment in artificial intelligence is going to reach $500 by 2024 resulting in substantial revenue returns. The augmented reality market size could reach $97 billion by 2028. Artificial intelligence today is increasingly used in many fields and is attracting multiple applications in many sectors such as manufacturing, retail, education, IT, and health care and has also contributed to sustainable development the same time by providing energy conservation options, optimization, and reduction of resources, minimizing wastage, offering timely assistance on maintenance schedules, practices which are enabling organizations to reach closer to sustainability and transformation.

Abstract

Proposes a method to assess the relative value of organizational human resource (HR) based on total performance. The total performance of the man‐machine resource base of an organization includes its profitability together with how it affects the interests of consumers, the national economy and society (i.e. other than profitability performance). The total performance thus achieved, judged in relation to the plant base used, reflects the productivity of HR. Such a productivity level achieved by the HR viewed in relation to the man‐related cost reflects the “external value” of HR. The impact of certain uncontrollable external factors (which may not be attributable to HR) has been assessed on the organizational total performance to reflect the controllable dimension of HR value, i.e. the “internal value” of organizational HR. The proposed method has been applied in an integrated iron and steel plant to study its HR value over a ten‐year period.

Abstract

Purpose

Deep learning (DL) technologies assist manufacturers to manage their business operations. This research aims to present state-of-the-art insights on the trends and ways forward for DL applications in manufacturing operations.

Design/methodology/approach

Using bibliometric analysis and the SPAR-4-SLR protocol, this research conducts a systematic literature review to present a scientific mapping of top-tier research on DL applications in manufacturing operations.

Findings

This research discovers and delivers key insights on six knowledge clusters pertaining to DL applications in manufacturing operations: automated system modelling, intelligent fault diagnosis, forecasting, sustainable manufacturing, environmental management, and intelligent scheduling.

Research limitations/implications

This research establishes the important roles of DL in manufacturing operations. However, these insights were derived from top-tier journals only. Therefore, this research does not discount the possibility of the availability of additional insights in alternative outlets, such as conference proceedings, where teasers into emerging and developing concepts may be published.

Originality/value

This research contributes seminal insights into DL applications in manufacturing operations. In this regard, this research is valuable to readers (academic scholars and industry practitioners) interested to gain an understanding of the important roles of DL in manufacturing operations as well as the future of its applications for Industry 4.0, such as Maintenance 4.0, Quality 4.0, Logistics 4.0, Manufacturing 4.0, Sustainability 4.0, and Supply Chain 4.0.
