Abstract
This chapter attempts to untangle the complex arena of private sector engagement in education by discussing the definitional challenges associated with understanding the non-state sector and by introducing some conceptual frameworks employed in research on private education. A thematic review of research from the field of Comparative International Education is provided to give the reader an understanding of the diversity that characterizes private involvement as well as the interconnectedness of private actors, specifically drawing attention to findings that grapple with equity implications. The chapter concludes with some suggestions for developing a framework for research via posing questions that ought to be asked when designing, conducting and analyzing findings from studies into private sector engagement in education.

This chapter considers the current state of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ+) librarianship in the United Kingdom. It begins with a question: at the time of writing, there seems to be more of a focus on LGBTQ+ issues in museums and archives than there is in libraries. Why is this so? To answer this, the chapter focuses briefly on the wider social setting; looks at current library provision; discusses what “queer librarianship” might involve; considers whether LGBTQ+ library staff’s and LGBTQ+ library users’ voices are heard; and then looks at the question of mainstreaming provision, and considers whether this would be a positive step forward.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the role of the doctorate as an investment in education, and to consider whose education is being invested in, how and why. We examine the role of postgraduate research within the doctorate and how this may contribute to a self-improving profession, self-improving educational institutions and self-improving education systems.
Methodology/approach
The methodology is the representation of different chapters from authors that explore the key themes that we introduce in this chapter.
Findings
We present the three main findings from a British Educational Leadership, Management and Administration Doctoral Research Interest Group seminar series funded by the British Educational Leadership, Management and Administration Society (BELMAS). First is the progression of a systemic basis for active educational research, engaged with the mobilization of learning-based and pedagogic knowledge leadership within doctoral scholarship, learning and pedagogy. Second is the continued examination of the internationalization of purpose, structure and function in doctoral study through evidence informed leadership. Third is the provision of opportunities to explore ways in which doctoral study may facilitate educational leaders to recognize ‘minoritised’ and marginalized communities, and disrupt dominant discourses that work within patterns of ecologies that ‘pathologise’ diversity and difference.
Originality/value
Here, a clearly stated focus emerged during the seminar series, emphasizing how leaders engaging with doctoral learning have the opportunity to articulate generative transformative theories of human learning for a civic curriculum, and to apply this new knowledge to work for change for students’ full economic, cultural and political participation in the society.

Abstract
This chapter focuses on researchers as knowledge workers in higher education in England as an illustration of what Katznelson (2003, p. 189) identifies as the ‘professional scholar’ undertaking intellectual work as a public intellectual. I begin by examining the challenges to intellectual work and its location in a university, particular from the media and the popularity of what Bourdieu calls Le Fast Talkers 1 – those who talk a lot but have nothing much to say. After drawing out the tensions within knowledge production, I then locate the analysis of what it means to do research in a period of education policymaking in England between 1997 and 2010, when New Labour called on researchers to produce evidence to support radical reforms. In particular, I argue that school effectiveness and school improvement (SESI) knowledge workers in Schools of Education in higher education in England are an interesting case for investigating the public intellectual positioning as ‘detached attachment’ (Melzner, 2003, p. 4), particularly through their attachment to New Labour governments and the subsequent detachment following a change of government in May 2010.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to numerically investigate time-harmonic elastic wave propagation with the analysis of effective wave velocities and attenuation coefficients in a three-dimensional elastic composite consisting of infinite matrix and uniformly distributed soft, low-contrast and absolutely rigid disc-shaped micro-inclusions.
Design/methodology/approach
Within the assumptions of longitudinal mode of a propagating wave as well as dilute concentration and parallel orientation of inclusions in an infinite elastic matrix, Foldy’s dispersion relation is applied for introducing a complex and frequency-dependent wavenumber of homogenized structure. Then, the effective wave velocities and attenuation coefficients are directly defined from the real and imaginary parts of wavenumber, respectively. Included there a far-field forward scattering amplitude by a single low-contrast inclusion given in an analytical form, while for the other types of single scatterers it is determined from the numerical solution of boundary integral equations relative to the displacement jumps across the surfaces of soft inclusion and the stress jumps across the surfaces of rigid inclusion.
Findings
On the frequency dependencies, characteristic extremes of the effective wave velocities and attenuation coefficients are revealed and analyzed for different combinations of the filling ratios of involved types of inclusions. Anisotropic dynamic behavior of composite is demonstrated by the consideration of wave propagation in perpendicular and tangential directions relatively to the plane of inclusions. Specific frequencies are revealed for the first case of wave propagation, at which inclusion rigidities do not affect the effective wave parameters.
Originality/value
This paper develops a micromechanical study that provides a deeper understanding of the effect of thin-walled inclusions of diversified rigidities on elastic wave propagation in a three-dimensional composite. Described wave dispersion and attenuation regularities are important for the non-destructive testing of composite materials by ultrasonics.

The rate of diffusion controlled dissolution of copper powder in acidified chromate solution under forced convection conditions was studied. Variables investigated were, rotational speed, initial concentration and physical properties of the acidic solution. Increasing the initial concentration was found to decrease the volumetric mass transfer coefficient. Within the range w = 150–600 rev/min, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient was found to be directly related to the rotational speed according to the following k a w0.6 On the other hand, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient was found to be inversely proportional to the kinematic viscosity of the solution according to the following relation k a v0.7

Abstract
The study here responds to the view that the crucial problem in strategic management (research) is firm heterogeneity – why firms adopt different strategies and structures, why heterogeneity persists, and why competitors perform differently. The present study applies complexity theory tenets and a “neo-configurational perspective” of Misangyi et al. (2016) in proposing complex antecedent conditions affecting complex outcome conditions. Rather than examining variable directional relationships using null hypotheses statistical tests, the study examines case-based conditions using somewhat precise outcome tests (SPOT). The complex outcome conditions include firms with high financial performances in declining markets and firms with low financial performances in growing markets – the study focuses on seemingly paradoxical outcomes. The study here examines firm strategies and outcomes for separate samples of cross-sectional data of manufacturing firms with headquarters in one of two nations: Finland (n = 820) and Hungary (n = 300). The study includes examining the predictive validities of the models. The study contributes conceptual advances of complex firm orientation configurations and complex firm performance capabilities configurations as mediating conditions between firmographics, firm resources, and the two final complex outcome conditions (high performance in declining markets and low performance in growing markets). The study contributes by showing how fuzzy-logic computing with words (Zadeh, 1966) advances strategic management research toward achieving requisite variety to overcome the theory-analytic mismatch pervasive currently in the discipline (Fiss, 2007, 2011) – thus, this study is a useful step toward solving the crucial problem of how to explain firm heterogeneity.

Purpose
Functionally graded materials are a special class of composites in which material are graded either continuously or layered wise depending upon its applications. With such variations of materials, the properties of structure vary either lengthwise or thickness wise. This paper aims to investigate models for effective estimation of material properties, as it is necessary for industries to identify the properties of composites or functionally graded materials (FGM’s) before manufacturing and also to develop novel material combinations.
Design/methodology/approach
Available models were compared for different material combinations and tested with experimental data for properties such as Young’s modulus, density, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal conductivity. Combinations of metal–ceramic and metal–metal were selected such that their ratios cover a wide range of materials.
Findings
This study reveals different models will be required depending on the material used and properties to be identified.
Practical implications
The results of the present work will help researchers in the effective modeling of composites or FGM’s for any analysis.
Originality/value
This paper presents a comparison and review of various analytical methods with experimental data graphically to find out the best suitable method. For the first time, the Halpin-Tsai model was extended in the analysis of the CTE which shows good approximations.
