Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to highlight how rising food prices influence the degree of poverty.

Design/methodology/approach

This is an empirical study employing the simple regression analysis.

Findings

Besides other variables it has been observed that poverty remains an important determinant of a country like Pakistan.

Research limitations/implications

On the basis of this study a socio‐economic policy can be formulated for a developing country like Pakistan.

Practical implications

A development policy (especially considering the urban and rural population) can be formulated on the basis of this research for the provision of basic needs for a developing and an orthodox economy like Pakistan.

Originality/value

This research is beneficial to researchers, policy makers and social scientists for the enhancement of the level of social welfare and poverty alleviation through its findings.

Abstract

Purpose

The sustainable performance of manufacturing companies may commence with employees’ eco-friendly initiatives. The management is responsible for employee green initiatives, requiring the human resource department to develop and implement green strategies. Therefore, it is essential to investigate how green human resource management enhances sustainable performance among manufacturing personnel. This study aims to determine if the green knowledge management and green innovation of manufacturing employees serve as serial mediators in the relationship between green human resource management and sustainable performance. Additionally, if artificial intelligence facilitated the relationship between green human resource management, green knowledge management and sustainable performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were gathered from manufacturing firm managers and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results indicated a notable and positive correlation between green human resource management and sustainable performance, green knowledge management and green innovation. Green knowledge management and green innovation exhibited significant positive correlations with sustainable performance. Additionally, green knowledge management and green innovation facilitated the connection between green human resource management and sustainable performance. This relationship was serially mediated by green knowledge management and green innovation. Furthermore, artificial intelligence moderated the relationship between green human resource management, green knowledge management and sustainable performance.

Practical implications

This study suggests that management can use study findings in decision-making to improve firms’ sustainable performance.

Originality/value

This study provides novel empirical evidence by investigating the mediation roles of green knowledge management and green innovation between green human resource management and sustainable performance through the lens of the natural resource orchestration theory.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to examine the role of green human resource management on environmental performance at Islamic universities, with the mediating effect of green cultural festivals and the moderating role of individual green values.

Design/methodology/approach

The research employed random sampling techniques by selecting a sample of 192 students from various Islamic universities in Indonesia. The participants were selected through an online survey. In addition, data analysis was done using the structural equation modelling-partial least squares (SEM-PLS) technique with the SmartPLS 3.0.

Findings

Implementing green human resource management has become a crucial factor in enhancing the environmental performance of Islamic universities. Moreover, green cultural festivals function as an intermediary variable. At the same time, individual green values exhibit a moderating variable that can enhance the influence between green human resource management and environmental performance.

Practical implications

Implementing an effective green human resource management strategy enhances environmental performance. Green human resource management has assisted universities in creating a generation of graduates with a solid commitment to ecological sustainability and raised awareness of the significance of conserving the environment. As a result, this commitment equips students to become agents of change in society upon graduation. Furthermore, campuses need to integrate environmental curriculum components into all study programs, as students need to understand the significant impact of environmental stewardship from both Islamic and scientific perspectives.

Originality/value

This research provides a novel perspective on how Islamic universities are exceptionally well-equipped to create environmental awareness and values that students can practically apply post-graduation using green cultural festivals, which are regularly held. This study is the first to introduce the concept of green cultural festivals in universities utilising the basis of combining green culture with cultural festivals with the theoretical background of resource-based theory.
