Geac Computers, Inc. is now in its twenty‐fourth year as a library system supplier. For the past year and a half, Geac has been combining the resources of recently acquired CLSI with its own to create a “new” Geac, a company focused on developing advanced information systems and superior service programs to meet the needs of libraries for the future. Geac's sole product development and design goal is to provide libraries with the most advanced technology available to enable them to manage and deliver information from a variety of sources worldwide. The measured transition to client/server architecture from the current centralized character‐based design is an example of Geac's adaptation of the latest technology to meet the needs of libraries. Networking is an important component of Geac's systems for the future. As more information becomes available in electronic formats via a variety of networks, it is important that Geac systems provide fast, easy, transparent access to it. The ultimate objective of Geac's client/server and network development is to provide fast, easy access to all types of data, wherever it resides.

What exactly are reference serials and why should they be reviewed? To answer the second question first, it is important that readers' services librarians be aware of the multitude of materials which can help them in their daily work. Furthermore, in this world of rising costs, a good critical review can be helpful to the librarian who is trying to determine how to spend his or her reference collection budget wisely.

This column has always intended to provide indepth, comparative reviews of abstracting services, indexes, serial bibliographies, yearbooks, directories, almanacs and other serial tools which would normally be housed in reference departments. For the purposes of this column, reference serials are materials which must meet two rather flexible requirements: they must be useful as reference sources and they must be issued as serials or be titles which are superseded periodically by new editions.

“Reference Serials” began in Reference Services Review, April‐June 1974 and last appeared in RSR, October‐December 1974. It was transferred to Serials Review with the inaugural double issue of SR, January‐June 1975, and appeared there through SR, October‐December 1978. With this issue it returns to RSR because the editors determined, after much examination, that this is where it belongs.

This article presents and reviews the evidence from a pilot project in the North of England in which a social worker was based in a surgery and worked proactively with a district nurse to introduce an integrated case management approach for patients in the practice. Decision‐making was noticeably simplified and speeded up, with most assessments completed in a single day. The authors recommend that PCTs should consider the benefits of social care input to case management, especially when planning new services and new roles such as that of community matron.
