Abstract

Purpose

To leverage the science of momentum and apply it to art of brand management.

Design/methodology/approach

Researches the brand literature. Revisits our understanding of Newtonian physics. Studies the history of brands that have experienced the power of momentum. Shares early drafts with fellow brand strategist for feedback and guidance.

Findings

Discovers that the resonance of momentum is real and memorable experience for the authors and for their readers. The authors had underestimated the number of brands that could leverage the concept of momentum to better manage and grow their brands.

Research limitations/implications

The authors believe it would be of value for the brand managers of those brands that are experiencing momentum to analyze the specific activities that are driving their brands.

Practical implications

It is the authors’ hope that brand managers will have a new lens through which to select, engage and measure brand‐building activities.

Originality/value

The authors do not believe that this information is new. They do believe that they have placed it in a context that promotes understanding and action.

Abstract

This study used qualitative discourse analysis to explore how researchers use the concept of ingenuity to understand the everyday work of social entrepreneurs. Data were drawn from a sample of 69 research articles published across 41 academic journals between 1998 and 2018. The findings showed ingenuity to be an underdeveloped concept in the social entrepreneurship literature and revealed a paucity of research on the everyday work performed by social entrepreneurs. A framework for studying the work of social entrepreneurs at the “scale of the everyday” through the lens of ingenuity is proposed, and recommendations for future research are provided.

Abstract

Giorgio Agamben has used the notion of the state of exception to describe the United States’ detention camps in Cuba. Agamben argues that the use of the state of exception in the U.S. can be traced back to President Lincoln's suspension of the right of habeas corpus during the Civil War. This paper suggests that this argument obscures more relevant legal and political precedents that can be found in U.S. territorial legal history. Moreover, while Agamben's argument obscures conceptual distinctions between a state of emergency and a state of exception, his argument also provides resources that can expose the limits of liberal interpretations of the relationship between the State, the citizen, and the law.

Abstract

The syllabus serves as a plan that can be utilized for discussing course (re)design. The Online Community of Inquiry Syllabus Rubric© (OCOISR) was developed for collaborators to review online course plans for continuous improvement. It assesses the potential to engender cognitive presence (CP), social presence (SP), teaching presence (TP), and learner support (LS) in online college courses based on interactive treatments. In one case study, two raters with advanced degrees in instructional design and online teaching experience reviewed 31 online syllabi across disciplines to determine their potential for producing an online community of inquiry. They achieved a good degree of consistency among measurements, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) = 0.821, p < 0.001, and 95% CI [0.40, 0.932]. Raters found above-average CP, moderate SP, and basic TP. These results mirrored that of the previous case study at a different institution. Other findings included basic educational technology use in both cases. The lead author, serving as the college’s instructional designer, provided course-specific recommendations to instructors based on their syllabi review for action research. This chapter describes the use of the OCOISR© to maximize student–student, student–teacher, and student–content planned engagement for improved online learning experiences.

Abstract

Purpose

Aims at developing vision‐based algorithms to improve efficiency and quality in agricultural applications. Two case studies are analyzed dealing with the harvest of radicchio and the post‐harvest of fennel, respectively.

Design/methodology/approach

Presents two visual algorithms, which are called the radicchio visual localization (RVL) and fennel visual identification (FVI). The RVL serves as a detection system of radicchio plants in the field for a robotic harvester. The FVI provides information to an automated cutting device to remove the parts of fennel unfit for the market, i.e. root and leaves. Laboratory and field experiments are described to validate our approach and asses the performance of our visual modules.

Findings

Both the visual systems presented showed to be effective in experimental trials, computational efficient, accurate, and robust to noises and lighting variations. Computer vision could be successfully adopted in the intelligent and automated production of fresh market vegetables to improve quality and efficiency.

Practical implications

Provides guidance in the development of vision‐based algorithms for agricultural applications.

Originality/value

Describes visual algorithms based on intelligent morphological and color filters which lends themselves very well to agricultural applications and allow robustness and real‐time performance.

Abstract

In his review of 30 years of research in Prospect Theory, Barberis (2013) notes that support for Prospect Theory had come mainly from the laboratory. In this paper, I write about a recurring phenomenon in real life that is consistent with Prospect Theory predictions in decision-making loss domain. The 60 cases noted in this paper are associated with specific risk seekers that had cost more than $140 billion (an average of $2.33 billion per case). Given space consider– ations, I provide synopses for 14 cases. A few of these cases have been discussed in the extant literature in connection with internal control, but were not considered from the perspective of Prospect Theory. It is striking that these cases are costly, all participants are young men, and almost all had followed the gambler’s martingale strategy – i.e., double down. While these cases are informative about risk-seeking behavior, they are not sufficiently systematic to be subjected to stylized archival research methods.

Abstract

Purpose

This study proposes a research model to test whether Six Sigma‐based management activities improve corporate competitiveness in Samsung Group.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper's model was validated and its hypotheses tested using structural equation model analysis.

Findings

Empirical results showed that Six Sigma activities do indeed contribute to revitalized process management, improved quality, and, finally, lead to corporate competitiveness.

Research limitations/implications

The survey data were collected at the individual level, such as GB, BB, MBB, and limited to the affiliated companies of Samsung Group. To obtain more meaningful results, data would be collected at the corporate level and the pool of subjects expanded. However, this paper shows that the four fundamental factors (CEO's will, Communication, Training, and Policy) as well as three substantial factors (Information Utilization, Standardization, and Promotion) are meaningful activities influencing the success of Six Sigma management significantly.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this paper lies in the establishment of a causal relationship among Six Sigma activities, process innovation, quality improvement, and company competitiveness, as well as in the proposed managerial implications for Six Sigma projects.

Abstract

The evolution of interorganizational networks is shaped by micro and macro processes. At the micro level organizational dyads negotiate relationships in light of their own cost—benefit analysis. At the macro level resources flow through networks and are mobilized by coalitions. Current research is beginning to examine integrating mechanisms which link network dynamics to dyadic relationship formation. In this paper we examine interorganizational brokerage as an integrating mechanism linking micro and macro network processes. We focus on the formation of networks in the global television industry. The Children's Television Network (CTW) has licensed and co‐produced its flagship program “Sesame Street” in many countries around the globe. Recently, it has expanded beyond a strategy based on direct first‐order linkages to one of brokerage and interorganizational entrepreneurship, entailing the formation of second‐order linkages—linkages between organizations with which CTW has direct first‐order relationships. In the aftermath of the Oslo Peace Agreement, CTW acted as a broker and sponsor of a joint venture between Israeli and Palestinian broadcasters. The main challenge facing CTW was a high degree of distrust between the parties motivated by fears of opportunistic exploitation. Such fears typically result in high transaction costs, making joint venture formation difficult, if not impossible. In its capacity as broker, CTW worked to reduce transaction costs. This was done by providing resources where needed, and by facilitating interaction and trust building between the parties. We describe CTW's tactics during the formation of this joint venture, and we analyze the outcome of the joint venture from the point of view of CTW's overall strategy. We conclude by discussing CTW's network and brokerage strategy in the aftermath of the joint venture.
