Abstract
An account is presented of the struggle for academic status by university librarians in Tanzania. The literature on the academic status of university libraries in Africa is reviewed. The arguments for, and benefits, of, academic status to both librarians and users are discussed in relation to the general African and specifically Tanzanian situation. An assessment is made of the challenges and prospects for the realisation and consolidation of academic status.

Abstract
Purpose
Paper-based records management systems remain dominant in Tanzanian Government organisations despite the increase in digital records management systems adoption across the globe. To create an understanding of this state, this study aims to investigate the use of records management systems in Tanzanian public sector organisations.
Design/methodology/approach
A descriptive research design was used in this study, alongside quantitative and qualitative approaches. A total of 81 respondents were drawn from three public sector organisations. To get a sample, non-probability (convenience and purposive) sampling techniques were used. A cross-sectional survey questionnaire and interview methods were used to gather quantitative and qualitative data. To analyse quantitative and qualitative data, the researchers used a mixed-methods analysis.
Findings
The study reveals different types of records management systems used in public sector organisations. Besides, the findings suggest that a large proportion of records are created through the digitisation of existing records. Aside from that, the study has revealed different types of records managed in the systems by government organisations. According to the study, there are various factors that determine the effective use of records management systems in public sector organisations.
Research limitations/implications
The implications of the present study are diverse. Specifically, its findings expand the theoretical body of knowledge by adding new insights regarding records management systems usage in government offices. The findings also provide the government with a basis for formulating and improving legal and regulatory frameworks to enhance records management. Apart from this, the findings are likely to benefit records practitioners by orchestrating inclusive strategies that will promote, not only effectiveness, but also sustainability in records management.
Originality/value
In Tanzania, a few studies have been conducted to examine digital records management practices and systems. These studies have not extensively highlighted the systems used to manage the records. This makes little to be known on the systems used to manage records in government offices. The present study has ascertained records management systems used in public sector organisations.

Abstract
Survey data were used to examine some issues, obstacles and the structure of career advancement prospects in Nigerian universities which was found to be slow and frustrating to reach the peak by practising librarians. The survey results indicate that 147 respondents (73 per cent) identified and rated the combination of professional duties with the academic work of publishing as their greatest obstacle to career advancement, whereas 25 librarians (12 per cent) indicate inadequate opportunities to reach the rank of university librarian as their second greatest obstacle. Furthermore, empirical results show that 12 respondents (6 per cent) indicated a lack of higher educational qualifications in librarianship as their third obstacle and ten respondents (5 per cent) indicated the lack of a generally accepted laid down policy on promotion criteria as their fourth problem, whereas eight respondents (4 per cent) indicated being uncomfortable with the unnecessary emphasis on publication output at the expense of performance of professional duties as their fifth obstacle. Issues such as the appointment of professors in university libraries, higher educational qualifications for librarians, retirement benefits and uniformity in designations were identified and solutions proffered. The author recommends the creation of new positions at the top to reduce frustration and stagnation

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the antecedents and consequences of insurer trust and salesperson trust, as well as the relationships between insurer, salesperson, and customer loyalty in order to build a conceptual model which investigates the relationships of insurer trust and salesperson trust, and finds ways to build trust and customer loyalty in the non-life insurance industry in Taiwan.
Design/methodology/approach
The data for this study were collected from the customers of non-life insurers’ policyholder service centres and were analysed using in-depth interviews and questionnaires. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was to assess the proposed research model empirically.
Findings
This study finds that firm size did not have a significant effect on insurer trust. Customer trust in the insurer was negatively but not significantly related to customer trust in the salesperson. Additionally, when relatives or friends are insurance salespersons; it is easy to build trust with them.
Originality/value
This study provides non-life insurers with new avenues for promoting and marketing their insurance.

Abstract
Purpose
This study explores the mediating effects of relationship marketing orientation (RMO) and service quality orientation (SQO) on market orientation, selling orientation, and policyholder retention in non-life insurance services. Additionally, it offers important recommendations for non-life insurers in Taiwan for policy development and improving policyholder retention.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected from a sample of policyholders belonging to the top five non-life insurance companies in Taiwan. The data were then analyzed with structural equation modeling.
Findings
RMO and SQO mediate the effects of the salesperson’s market orientation on policyholder retention. Thus, RMO and SQO are key factors influencing policyholder retention. Consequently, high levels of market orientation should be maintained to increase RMO and SQO, strengthening the retention rate of non-life insurance policyholders.
Research limitations/implications
The main limitation of this study is its cross-sectional nature. In the future, researchers should collect data from other countries and service industries (e.g. banks, securities, and other financial institutions), expand to different insurance contexts (e.g. life insurance), and conduct longitudinal studies or experimental research.
Practical implications
The results of this study can act as a guide for providers of non-life insurance services. Based on the research results, we recommend decision-makers pay increased attention to increasing policyholder retention rates by strengthening their firm’s RMO and SQO.
Originality/value
Few studies have investigated the relationships among market orientation, selling orientation, RMO, SQO, and policyholder retention in non-life insurance services within Asian contexts in general and specifically in Taiwan. Thus, this study’s theoretical contributions, managerial implications (especially for decision-makers), and the proposed future research directions represent timely and valuable additions to the literature.
