Abstract

Within the past few years, responsible educators, librarians, parents, counselors, social workers, therapists, and religious groups of all sexual persuasions and lifestyles have recognized the need for readily available reading material for lesbian and gay youth. Unfortunately, this material is often buried, because it is embedded in larger works. To meet this need, I have compiled and annotated 100 of the best works for young homosexuals, bisexuals, and heterosexuals. I have also included a few of the best works currently available on heterosexuality as a much needed source of knowledge for all young adults whether they are gay or straight, whether they remain childless or eventually become parents.

Abstract

The first Super Trident Three made its maiden flight recently in the hands of Mr. John Cunningham, Executive Director and Chief Test Pilot at Hawker Siddeley's Hatfield factory. On completion of flight testing this aircraft will be delivered to The People's Republic of China. Although this aircraft is externally similar to the Trident Three in service with British Airways, the all‐up‐weight of the Super Trident Three has been increased by 8,000 lb. as a result of design refinement after structural testing. This has enabled the installation of an additional fuel tank and a 25% increase in maximum payload range. Fuel capacity of this latest version of the Trident is 380 imperial gallons more than the standard Trident Three and the range is increased by 430 statute miles (700 km.) to 2,100 statute miles (3,300 km.). The seating capacity of the Super Trident Three, of which this is the first of two of this version for the Civil Aviation Administration of China, will be for 152 passengers, an increase of 35% over the CAAC Trident Two's currently in service.

Abstract

FOLLOWING on the beating of the 100‐kilometre ‘closed circuit’ speed record, by the de Havilland Vampire and Meteor, the Supermarine Attacker and now the D.H. 108 successively, the aeroplane height record has now also come into the possession of Great Britain through a great flight by GROUP CAPTAIN JOHN CUNNINGHAM in a Vampire to a height which only just fell short of 60,000 feet—a performance which has, we feel, hardly received the publicity which is its due.

Abstract

This chapter examines the effects of covert forms of social control on social movement participants. Current social science literature addresses the effect of surveillance on social movement organizations, but stops short of exploring the experience of surveillance for political activists. We begin by reviewing how state social control has been incorporated into paradigmatic social movement models. Drawing on examples from the FBI's counterintelligence programs and the growing literature emphasizing the emotional components of social movement mobilization processes, we then demonstrate the range of direct and indirect costs exerted by social control agents on both organizational and individual targets.

Abstract

General systems theory offers one perspective for defining and understanding the problems that organisations face. The author presents a set of systems problem‐solving principles, and offers a procedure which might be useful when conventional problem‐solving has not been totally successful. The article illustrates this procedure in trying to address a budget deficit problem in a large metropolitan hospital.

Abstract

Purpose

With more and more digital natives entering the workplace, this paper looks to advise business about how they can implement successful social media strategies

Design/methodology/approach

This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the article in context

Findings

With many companies just starting to appreciate how social media can fit into their business, new graduates have a huge role to play in passing on their digital fluency

Practical implications

This paper provides practical advise about how to implement and manage social media strategies.

Social implications

Social networking opens many doors. Whilst in the past networks were built through the exchange of business cards and face‐to‐face meetings, this has transferred to the digital sphere.

Originality/value

This is an original paper drafted for the readers of Strategic Direction. Social networking is a new channel of communication that businesses are taking advantage of, but they need to get the balance right.

Abstract

LIBRARY activity has been very great since the year opened. On all sides librarians report issues which are greatly in excess of any previously reached. This has been interpreted by ourselves and by others as a reflex of the general unemployment. It is also due no doubt to the lack of pence on the part of many people for amusements, who find that reading is a cheap form of diversion. There can be no cause for anything but satisfaction in the fact that in such unhappy times our people turn to books. It is a hopeful sign, for the nation that reads gathers a resilience and buoyancy which can be got from few other activities.

Abstract

Purpose

Although the way in which, for example, substance use problems are conceived and reacted to (by experts and treatment professionals but also by the environment), can have vast consequences for those directly or indirectly concerned, there is little systematic knowledge about how various preferred approaches differ between types of problems and sociocultural settings. In an ambition to at least partly mend this gap, this paper aims to compare how the general public in Sweden, Finland, and Canada appraise four generically different approaches to dealing with substance use problems, as these are applied to problem use of alcohol, cannabis, heroin, and cigarettes.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses data from three national surveys, aimed at uncovering how representative population samples from Sweden, Finland, and Canada perceive and understand the character of, and the proper way of handling, various addictive problems. Data from these surveys have been used to discern and operationalize four basic “models of helping and coping” as these have been outlined by Brickman et al. (1982). The analysis has aimed at investigating how the popular preferences for either of these models vary with type of addiction (to cigarettes, alcohol, cannabis, and other (“hard”) drugs, national setting, and potentially important respondent characteristics.

Findings

The results point to large differences between the ways in which the general public understands the proper way of handling the four types of addiction, and shows, for example, that addiction to “hard” drugs is predominantly perceived as a matter for expert treatment, whereas smoking, or addiction to cigarettes, is more often perceived as a bad habit which the user is able to break on her/his own. In addition, the popularity of different handling models is found to vary between countries, and with personal characteristics such as gender, age, and substance use experiences.

Originality/value

The study is one of few that have systematically tried to find out how various forms of substance use problems, or addiction, are conceived and reacted to in various national and social settings.
