Abstract

The electronic marketplace will necessitate alternative entrepreneurship models. As more organizations enter the arena of electronic commerce, research is needed to examine how entrepreneurs effectively design and integrate new business models and practices in their organizations. The purpose of this paper was to examine the targeted role that organizational strategy has in assisting entrepreneurial firms identify and evaluate new opportunities and ideas for their businesses. We also investigate the role of the entrepreneur’s personality (e.g. proactive personality) in influencing how the entrepreneurial firm implements product/service innovations, builds an external business network, and cultivates employee relationships. Implications for the strategic management of innovation in emerging Internet entrepreneurial firms are discussed.

Abstract

Students with learning disabilities (LD) have a wide range of academic needs. Since the passing of P.L. 94-142, significant research has been done on effective interventions for this group of students. Starting with the Learning Disabilities Research Institutes through the recent Handbook of Learning Disabilities, reviews of lines of research make several broad ideas about interventions clear. Primary among these is that students with LD can learn if provided with appropriate, effective instruction. Specifics about this idea and its implications are discussed in the following chapter.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to consider what safeguarding responses to discriminatory abuse and hate crime might learn from existing research on restorative justice and to drive practice development based on available evidence.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is based on a scoping review of literature using four academic databases and reference harvesting. This comprised a critical appraisal of 30 articles, which were thematically analysed to appreciate the benefits and challenges of restorative justice responses to hate crime and how this might inform safeguarding responses to discriminatory abuse and hate crime.

Findings

The analysis identifies four domains where learning can be drawn. These relate to theory on restorative justice; restorative justice practices; perspectives from lived experience of restorative justice and hate crime; and an appraisal of critiques about restorative justice.

Originality/value

This paper connects the emerging evidence on restorative criminal justice responses to hate crime to the “turn” towards strengths-based practices in adult safeguarding. Although this provides a fertile environment for embedding restorative practices, the authors argue certain precautions are required based on evidence from existing research on hate crime and restorative justice.

Abstract

Purpose

The author will describe the operational tasks of S.44’s statutory mandate: for example, commissioning the review; being responsive to the representatives of the relevant agencies concerned; securing pharmacological/medical advice; adding Ben’s death to the review; engaging with relatives; and ensuring that “lessons” were foregrounded. How the review was set up/recognising the standout features from the beginning/managing the situation when an agency is withholding information/“drip feeds” information into the review; navigating/steering the Safeguarding Adults Review (SAR) alongside other processes – police/inquest/Care Quality Commission.

Design/methodology/approach

This practice paper describes the experiences of coordinating a complex SAR into the deaths of three adults at Cawston Park Hospital in Norfolk.

Findings

The system insights that SARs give us prompt exploration of how to inject this learning into current discourse on how we better protect the most vulnerable in our communities.

Originality/value

The purpose of this paper is to explore the process and requirements of conducting a complex SAR from the perspective of a safeguarding adults board manager. It will be of interest to anyone who is involved in SARs, in particular safeguarding adult board chairs, board managers, members of SABs and SAR authors as management of SAR is one of the three statutory duties of a SAB.

Abstract

Purpose

The author, who is Chair of Norfolk’s Safeguarding Adults’ Board (SAB) reflects on the impact of a Safeguarding Adults Review (SAR) and the actions that resulted. The purpose of the paper is to provide an insight into a significant SAR and the resulting actions desinged to change practice.

Design/methodology/approach

The actions illuminate the power of hospitals and politicians over people’s lives. It took the deaths of three young adults with learning disabilities, in a hospital, to move beyond the status quo and organise some very different service responses.

Findings

“Progress summits” have considered local and national actions. There have been important gains and setbacks, including the delayed reform of the Mental Health Act. Despite uncertainties, SAB can be detonators to listening and taking action.

Originality/value

This is a unique insight into the impact of a Safeguarding Adults Review and the actions that resulted from this.

Abstract

Purpose

With the emergence of the digital era, the role of digital leaders in developing digital capabilities and driving their firms towards digital transformation has gained significant attention. Digital dynamic capabilities involve continuous engagement of leaders in sensing, seizing, and transforming activities needed to digitally transform their firms. However, little attention is given toward the role of digital leadership in developing digital dynamic capabilities. We seek to develop an understanding of the role of digital leadership in building digital dynamic capabilities for successful digital transformation.

Design/methodology/approach

We conducted a systematic literature review and looked at relevant articles using Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases with key search items being “digital leadership”, “dynamic capabilities”, “digital dynamic capabilities,”. We used AND, OR operators in between the key terms to search for the relevant articles.

Findings

Our conceptual framework and propositions demonstrate the digital leader's role in building three core dynamic capabilities: digital sensing (technological trends, digital scouting, digital vision, future interpretation, and digital strategies), digital seizing (organizational agility and digital portfolio), and transforming (redesigning internal structures and ecosystem partnerships) for successful digital transformation.

Originality/value

This study pioneers an integrated framework that elucidates the role of digital leadership in fostering digital dynamic capabilities essential for successful digital transformation. While previous research has examined digital leadership and transformation in separate silos, our work bridges this gap by defining and dissecting three core capabilities—digital sensing, digital seizing, and transforming. By doing so, we offer both academic and practical communities a nuanced understanding of how digital leadership shapes dynamic capabilities. The study serves as a foundational roadmap for future research and offers actionable insights for organizations striving to navigate the complex landscape of digital transformation.

Abstract

This essay is an exercise in imaginative historiography. Its purpose is to modify the boundaries between sociology, social work, and literature that have become impediments to the pursuit of socially responsible scholarship; its goal is to create an analogue in the past for a field that many revisionists wish to create in the present – a field of cultural inquiry in which knowledge is considered both cognitive and emotional, methods are imaginative, and results are meant to improve human relations. In the past I posit as a “working hypothesis” (in Mead’s sense of the term) for this field, I bring together figures, specifically Jane Addams and the nineteenth-century playwright Joanna Baillie, whose contributions to sociology and literature are being separately but not jointly recovered. I examine three key similarities that make Addams and Baillie kindred spirits: they cultivated sympathy as a way of knowing and acting, and made it the basis for social change; they preferred situational problem-solving to theory-building; they used drama for value inquiry and morality construction. Throughout, I also allude to affinities with the thought of Mead, affinities that are important for avoiding gender essentialism in this argument. I illustrate the combined use of problem-solving, sympathy and drama by linking Baillie’s plays on criminality with Addams’s and Mead’s efforts at criminal justice reform and with present-day efforts to move from an ethics of justice to an ethics of care. By bringing Baillie to Hull-House and considering how she might have contributed to the work of Addams, Mead, and their associates, I construct a precedent for transdisciplinary cultural inquiry.
