Abstract

Knowledge of conversation theory and speech acts assists us to understand how people search for information. Dialogue embodies meanings and intentionalities, and represents epistemic inquiry. There are implications for the information‐processing model of cognitive psychology. Question formulation (erotetics) and turn‐taking play important roles in eliciting information, while discourse analysis furnishes us with information about people's categorising, recall, and semantic skills.

Abstract

The question of Britain's entry into the Common Market would appear to have been resolved. For a time it did seem as if the Government was looking before it leapt, but if we can read the signs aright, only the controversy now remains. The implications of the Common Market, both political and economic, are largely unknown to the public and if recent events among French farmers are an indication, are not entirely acceptable to those already in it.

Abstract

Chronicles the British Petroleum Company through its formation in 1909 to 1939 (pre‐Second World War), following on from being a distribution company of the Anglo‐Persian Oil Company. Shows that by the outbreak of war in 1914 it owned over 850 depots, employing nearly 3,000 people. Posits that the war changed the position of the BP Company and its shipping company ‐ being classed as enemy concerns ‐ even though most employees were British. Documents the changes throughout the war years and chronicles with tables the changes right up to the Second World War, also includes copies of adverts used in BP's formative years including the time of the Great Depression and BP's merger with Shell Mex.

Abstract

The tradition of medicine has until now been characterized by an aspiration to provide as complete as possible a service of care to the populations to which it owes responsibility. The same holds for nursing and caring practices, but the tradition is loosening. Despite the collective assumption that medical and nursing practice rests on solid grounds of knowledge and is framed by a caring ethos, change in practice not only has typically come about in a complex and diffuse fashion, but has also come along with sacrifices, losses and deficits.
