Abstract
Liquid Plastics Ltd donated 50 litres of their Decadex‐Fire‐check, coloured bright red, to help a special project devised by the well known theatrical producer Joan Littlewood for the benefit of children in London's East End. The Decadex‐Firecheck has been used to coat Tri‐Wall Pak learning shelters which were an important feature of the project, termed the Stratford Fair, originating on waste ground opposite Miss Littlewood's Theatre Royal.
The author and Gordon Pask first met at Cambridge. Later, they worked together on Joan Littlewood’s Fun Palace project. Here are some memories of those days.

Abstract
DURING THE last two years nothing has appealed to the imagination of the students of the Day Continuation Department of the Walker Technical College more than improvised Drama — the creation of a play from a given situation, introduced as an experiment with the object of showing the students something of the recent developments in the Theatre inspired by Joan Littlewood and the Theatre Workshop, it provided a stimulating and satisfying educational experience for both students and lecturers. As an activity it proved to have considerable educational value and established a claim to be included in all courses of General Education.

Abstract
This paper concerns the author’s long‐standing friendship with Gordon Pask. It describes several occasions where their lives overlapped significantly, namely working with chemical computers, the founding of the Department of Cybernetics at Brunel University and working together on the design of Joan Littlewood’s Fun Palace project.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate possibilities for a more intersubjective digital design process that amplifies the potential for novelty to arise.
Design/methodology/approach
First the author will explore the metaphorical concept of the house as a machine in two different contexts, the industrial age, and conversational age, discussing how each concept can generate variety in the built environment. Second, the author presents some examples of conversational customization in architecture along with the Woka, an ongoing research project that attempts to create a more conversational design process. Finally, the author will discuss the possibility of conversational customization in design as a possible solution to a more open and intersubjective process in design.
Findings
The author finds that a possible way to reach a true paradigm shift in the process of production of architectural space is to use conversation as a design approach, from design to use, shifting the focus from the object to the process, amplifying variety and the potential for novelty to arise.
Practical implications
The objective is to offer designers a new way of thinking about design that focusses on conversation and intersubjective processes.
Originality/value
The notion of conversational customization may offer a conceptual base for architects to explore conversation in design.
