Abstract

Purpose

This study proposes to develop and investigate different iterative solvers for non‐Newtonian flow equations.

Design/methodology/approach

Existing approaches for the time discretization of the flow equation and for an iterative solution of the discrete systems are discussed. Ideas for further development of existing preconditioners are proposed, implemented and investigated numerically.

Findings

A two‐level preconditioning, consisting of a transformation of the original system in the first step and subsequent preconditioning of the transformed system is suggested. The GMRES iterative method, which usually performs well when applied to academic problems, showed dissatisfactory performance for the type of industrial flow simulations investigated in this work. It was found that the BiCGStab method performed best in the tests presented here.

Research limitations/implications

The iterative solvers considered here were investigated only for a certain class of polymer flows. More detailed studies for other non‐Newtonian flows should be carried out.

Originality/value

The work presented in this paper fills a gap related to the usage of efficient iterative methods for non‐Newtonian flow simulations.

Abstract

Purpose

To examine how reading in electronic formats differs from traditional reading of print.

Design/methodology/approach

Concepts about digital print are discussed alongside research studies in fields related to multisensory technologies and electronic means of communication. A model of online reading is proposed integrating aspects of information foraging theory. Pedagogical applications are needed to integrate e-reading theory within classrooms.

Findings

With the varied text structures, directionality concerns, and interactive text features, our attention must turn to the theoretical foundations that underpin digital literacy learning today. Online foraging schemes can explain how information is sought and retrieved when reading new information from digital mediums.

Practical implications

Teachers must address the current, digital literacy needs of their students, thus preparing them for challenges in the 21st century. Varying text structures within digital formats as well as providing as-needed facilitation are the scaffolds that students need today. Using technologies such as digital games, tools, and contexts advances the mission of resource-based teaching and learning.

Abstract

This chapter presents two examples of misinterpretation of the philosophical term and historical concept of human dignity in contemporary legal theory and practice. Current legal theories (R. Alexy) still introduce Pico’s concept of dignity regarding the human personality and personal (volitional and rational) abilities. The term ‘dignity’ is marginal for Pico and shows the spiritual way to the status of the original Adam. Pico’s concept of dignity is located in the area of spirit (hyperphysics), not metaphysics (soul) or physics (materials). Günter Dürig in his commentary to Grundgesetz also used the Kantian concept of human dignity. Dürig exaggerated this value and used it also for the area of physics (to protect the human being as a personality). For Kant, the term ‘dignity’ was also marginal, and he used it in the area of metaphysics (soul – especially the moral and rational parts), regarding transcendence for homo noumenon, not for homo phaenomenon. In general, it seems to be problematic to use the ideal of the dignity for the law, which regulates the social relations between concrete phenomenal personalities. There are parallels to Pico. The Kantian starting point was different from Pico, because Kant stays in the area of metaphysics (especially the moral and rational parts). Both consider freedom as a condition of dignity. The concept of autonomy of will is significant for both, but each thinks of it in different ways. For both, human being can become master of oneself, but in a different context.
