Abstract

Considers the pursuit of high quality, flexibility and employee commitment alongside significant downsizing and delayering initiatives. Examines the impact on surviving employees in downsized and delayered organizations. Proposes that organizations need to be more mindful than they have been in the past of survivor responses and issues. Contends that the espoused aim of many organizations to achieve employee commitment may be dependent largely on the degree of success with which organizations overcome survivor responses which are negatively oriented towards them. Explores the scope for organizational action to address issues which the workforce believes are important, suggesting that this should help organizations to engender positive survivor responses and organizational commitment. Reports how findings from qualitative research have been used to develop a diagnostic tool to help organizations assess their own ability to manage these factors and to influence survivor commitment. Discusses the use and validity of this tool. Concludes by emphasizing the need for organizations to be aware of and to respond to these issues and their effects. Highlights the importance of developing the strategy to rebuild survivors’ commitment over a longer term.

Abstract

Man has been seeking an ideal existence for a very long time. In this existence, justice, love, and peace are no longer words, but actual experiences. How ever, with the American preemptive invasion and occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq and the subsequent prisoner abuse, such an existence seems to be farther and farther away from reality. The purpose of this work is to stop this dangerous trend by promoting justice, love, and peace through a change of the paradigm that is inconsistent with justice, love, and peace. The strong paradigm that created the strong nation like the U.S. and the strong man like George W. Bush have been the culprit, rather than the contributor, of the above three universal ideals. Thus, rather than justice, love, and peace, the strong paradigm resulted in in justice, hatred, and violence. In order to remove these three and related evils, what the world needs in the beginning of the third millenium is the weak paradigm. Through the acceptance of the latter paradigm, the golden mean or middle paradigm can be formulated, which is a synergy of the weak and the strong paradigm. In order to understand properly the meaning of these paradigms, however, some digression appears necessary.

Abstract

This paper tries to empirically investigate whether the jump risk of Korean stock market may be statistically useful in explaining the Korean CDS (5Y) premium rate. This paper uses the jump-diffusion model with heteroscedasticity to estimate the conditional volatility of KOSPI from 7/2/2007 to 7/30/2010.

The total volatility of Korean stock market is decomposed into a heteroscedasticity and a jump risk by using the jump-diffusion model. The finding is that the jump risk in stead of heteroscedasticity in Korean stock market can explain the Korean CDS premium rate.

Outlines the ideas incorporated in “development economics” and criticizes the lack of distinction made by some writers between development and economic growth. Asks whether underdeveloped countries really need a different economic theory from Western Europe and suggests that growth (in gross national product) and development (i.e. structural change) are actually complementary processes. Reviews various theories on the causes of underdevelopment (e.g. market failure, government failure) and strategies to cure it (e.g. government intervention, private initiative, market mechanism); and cites some examples of successful positive intervention.

Abstract

The question of responsibility is not new to labour law. The earliest developments in labour law and social law sprang from a “legal revolution” to borrow the words of Georges Scelle, considering the concept of responsibility that prevailed in common law. Civil responsibility which was originally based on fault could now be based on the risk inherent to a socially useful activity so as to ensure that the responsibility for damages that might result from it be equitably shared. This development took place under the generalization of the industrial production mode, first within the frame work of laws respecting compensation for industrial accidents.

Abstract

The paper evaluates the international linkage of Indonesian stock market during pre‐crisis and post‐crisis periods using time series techniques of cointegration and vector autoregression (VAR). We find evidence for lack of cointegration among the Indonesian market, other ASEAN markets (Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand) and two advanced markets (the US and Japan) during both pre‐crisis and post‐crisis periods. Looking at short run dynamics, we document evidence for substantial interactions among the ASEAN markets. However, it seems that the Indonesian market becomes more segmented from other ASEAN markets during the post‐crisis period. Additionally, while most ASEAN markets respond quickly to shocks in the US regardless of the sample period and seem to be less influenced by the Japanese market post crisis, the Indonesian market becomes more responsive to the developed markets of the US and Japan during the post crisis period.
