Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to reproduce the electrical connector intermittent fault behaviours with step-up vibration stress while maintaining the integrity of the product.

Design/methodology/approach

A dynamic model of an electrical connector under vibration is established for contact resistance analysis. Next, the dynamic characteristics of contact resistance are analysed, and cumulative damage theory is used to calculate the damage under different stresses during the intermittent fault reproduction test. To reduce damage and improve efficiency, the step-up stress is used for the reproduction test.

Findings

The proposed method can reproduce the intermittent fault behaviour, and the step-up stress test is more efficient than the constant stress test.

Research limitations/implications

Step-up stress is used for intermittent fault reproduction, and the quantitative relationships between intermittent fault and product damage can be further studied.

Practical implications

It is expected that the proposed methodology can help engineers to reproduce the intermittent fault behaviours to facilitate the detection and diagnosis of intermittent fault and to improve equipment safety.

Originality/value

The mechanism of electrical connector reproduction is analysed and the step-up stress test is used for intermittent fault reproduction.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims at the problem of attaching the data of doctors, patients and the real-time sensor data of the exoskeleton to the cloud in intelligent rehabilitation applications. This study designed the exoskeleton cloud-brain platform and validated its safety assessment.

Design/methodology/approach

According to the dimension of data and the transmission speed, this paper implements a three-layer cloud-brain platform of exoskeleton based on Alibaba Cloud's Lambda-like architecture. At the same time, given the human–machine safety status detection problem of the exoskeleton, this paper built a personalized machine-learning safety detection module for users with the multi-dimensional sensor data cloned by the cloud-brain platform. This module includes an abnormality detection model, prediction model and state classification model of the human–machine state.

Findings

These functions of the exoskeleton cloud-brain and the algorithms based on it were validated by the experiments, they meet the needs of use.

Originality/value

This thesis innovatively proposes a cloud-brain platform for exoskeletons, beginning the digitalization and intelligence of the exoskeletal rehabilitation process and laying the foundation for future intelligent assistance systems.

Abstract

Purpose

Lower-limb exoskeleton systems enable people with spinal cord injury to regain some degree of locomotion ability, as the expected motion curve needs to adapt with changing scenarios, i.e. stair heights, distance to the stairs. The authors’ approach enables exoskeleton systems to adapt to different scenarios in stair ascent task safely.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors learn the locomotion from predefined trajectories and walk upstairs by re-planning the trajectories according to external forces posed on exoskeleton systems. Moreover, instead of using complex sensors as inputs for re-planning in real-time, the approach can obtain forces acting on exoskeleton through dynamic model of human-exoskeleton system learned by an online machine learning approach without accurate parameters.

Findings

The proposed approach is validated in both simulation environment and a real walking assistance exoskeleton system. Experimental results prove that the proposed approach achieves better performance than the traditional predefined gait approach.

Originality/value

First, the approach obtain the external forces by a learned dynamic model of human-exoskeleton system, which reduces the cost of exoskeletons and avoids the heavy task of translating sensor input into actuator output. Second, the approach enables exoskeleton accomplish stair ascent task safely in different scenarios.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the health‐states of unit under test (UUT) in aerospace systems by means of unreliable test outcomes, and the evaluation results can provide a guide for engineers to carry out proper maintenance prior to total failure.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors formulate the health‐state evaluation (HSE) problem with unreliable test outcomes based on Bayes rule, and develop the Lagrangian relaxation and adaptive genetic algorithm (LRAGA) to solve it. The solution scheme can be viewed as a two‐level coordinated solution framework for the HSE problem. At the top level, the Lagrange multipliers are updated by using AGA. At the bottom level, each of the sub‐problems is solved by using AGA.

Findings

The experimental results show that the HSE model appears promising and the LRAGA can obtain the higher quality solution and converge to it at a faster rate than conventional methods (i.e. Lagrangian relaxation (LR), genetic algorithm (GA), simulated annealing (SA) and Lagrangian relaxation and genetic algorithm (LRGA).

Research limitations/implications

The proposed method for the HSE problem of large‐scale systems which include thousands of faults and tests needs to be verified further.

Practical implications

The HSE results for aerospace systems can help engineers to carry out a schedule for prompt maintenance prior to UUTs' failure, to avoid the consequences of total failure. It is important to improve aerospace systems' safety, reliability, maintainability, affordability, and reduce life cycle cost.

Originality/value

This paper constructs the HSE model with unreliable test outcomes based on the Bayes rule and proposes a method based on LRAGA to solve the HSE problem.

Abstract

This article proposes an architecture of an intelligent and autonomous recommendation system to be applied to any virtual learning environment, with the objective of efficiently recommending digital resources. The paper presents the architectural details of the intelligent and autonomous dimensions of the recommendation system. The paper describes a hybrid recommendation model that orchestrates and manages the available information and the specific recommendation needs, in order to determine the recommendation algorithms to be used. The hybrid model allows the integration of the approaches based on collaborative filter, content or knowledge. In the architecture, information is extracted from four sources: the context, the students, the course and the digital resources, identifying variables, such as individual learning styles, socioeconomic information, connection characteristics, location, etc. Tests were carried out for the creation of an academic course, in order to analyse the intelligent and autonomous capabilities of the architecture.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify and analyse the interactions among various enablers which are critical to the success of big data initiatives in operations and supply chain management (OSCM).

Design/methodology/approach

Fourteen enablers of big data in OSCM have been selected from literature and consequent deliberations with experts from industry. Three different multi criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques, namely, interpretive structural modeling (ISM), fuzzy total interpretive structural modeling (fuzzy-TISM) and decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) have been used to identify driving enablers. Further, common enablers from each technique, their hierarchies and inter-relationships have been established.

Findings

The enabler modelings using ISM, Fuzzy-TISM and DEMATEL shows that the top management commitment, financial support for big data initiatives, big data/data science skills, organizational structure and change management program are the most influential/driving enablers. Across all three different techniques, these five different enablers has been identified as the most promising ones to implement big data in OSCM. On the other hand, interpretability of analysis, big data quality management, data capture and storage and data security and privacy have been commonly identified across all three different modeling techniques as the most dependent big data enablers for OSCM.

Research limitations/implications

The MCDM models of big data enablers have been formulated based on the inputs from few domain experts and may not reflect the opinion of whole practitioners community.

Practical implications

The findings enable the decision makers to appropriately choose the desired and drop undesired enablers in implementing the big data initiatives to improve the performance of OSCM. The most common driving big data enablers can be given high priority over others and can significantly enhance the performance of OSCM.

Originality/value

MCDM-based hierarchical models and causal diagram for big data enablers depicting contextual inter-relationships has been proposed which is a new effort for implementation of big data in OSCM.

Abstract

Purpose

The premature closure of microbusinesses has become a prevalent issue that demands to be seriously addressed due to the major economic contribution it provides particularly to developing countries. The purpose of this paper is to establish and further analyze a set of critical failure factors (CFFs) that aid in the systematic decision-making and strategic management of stakeholders.

Design/methodology/approach

A comprehensive literature review is conducted to gather CFFs and an interpretative structural modeling with Matriced’ Impacts Croise’s Multiplication Appliquée a UN Classement (ISM-MICMAC) analysis is applied to investigate the structural relationships among CFFs by extracting its inherent characteristics according to its driving power and dependence power. In order to illustrate the methodology, a case study is conducted in Cebu, the Philippines.

Findings

It is interesting to note that inadequate government programs information is deemed the most crucial for stakeholders to tackle as its impact on the premature closure of microbusinesses is highly significant. Drawing from this key result, directions for potential strategies for getting evidence-based research into policy and practice in the micro-business sector in the Philippines, and other developing countries, are provided.

Originality/value

Lastly, the contribution of this work is two-fold and is aimed at policymakers and managers. For one, this study is the first to establish a set of CFFs specifically aimed at the level of microbusinesses, a seriously under-researched business sector, which can aid and influence domestic policymakers. For another, a framework that will facilitate business managers in carrying out organization’s strategy development process have been provided.

Abstract

Urbanisation, environmental sustainability and property markets are intertwined. Consequently, studies on any of these three topics need to take the other two topics into consideration. By critically reviewing 33 hedonic pricing studies in 16 key journals in the urban studies and environmental policies areas, we summarise quantitative evidence on the price of environmental externalities resulting from China's urbanisation process. We find that Chinese residents are willing to pay more for the access to green space and waterbody as well as the treatment of urban pollution. The cost and benefit of these amenities and disamenities have already been capitalised in house prices. The central and local government in China can leverage market force to encourage, support and facilitate sustainable urban development and environmental protection, instead of directly intervening in the property market by using public resources. Meanwhile, the estimated hedonic price of Urban Green, Urban Blue and Urban Grey helps policymakers to understand the cost and benefit of their urban development decisions. Our review of the papers on Urban Green, Urban Blue and Urban Grey suggests that there have been promising and encouraging development in studies on all three topics in the last decade. The quality and quantity of hedonic price research has been improving notably. However, it is also clear that there is virtually no empirical evidence from the second- or third-tier cities, particularly, regarding Urban Green and Urban Blue investigations. The small number of existing hedonic studies is far from sufficient to draw reliable conclusions about the costs of environmental externality for cities that have not been studied. What works in first-tier cities may not hold elsewhere in China due to the large geographical variation in natural endowment, economic development status and local customs. There are many pieces that are missing from this big picture. More hedonic price studies are needed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the spatial distribution of housing prices and identify the affecting factors (independent variable) on the cost of residential units (dependent variable).

Design/methodology/approach

The method of the present study is descriptive-analytical and has an applied purpose. The used statistical population in this study is the residential units’ price in Tehran in 2021. For this purpose, the average per square meter of residential units in the city neighborhoods was entered in the geographical information system. Two techniques of ordinary least squares regression and geographically weighted regression have been used to analyze housing prices and modeling. Then, the results of the ordinary least squares regression and geographically weighted regression models were compared by using the housing price interpolation map predicted in each model and the accurate housing price interpolation map.

Findings

Based on the results, the ordinary least squares regression model has poorly modeled housing prices in the study area. The results of the geographically weighted regression model show that the variables (access rate to sports fields, distance from gas station and water station) have a direct and significant effect. Still, the variable (distance from fault) has a non-significant impact on increasing housing prices at a city level. In addition, to identify the affecting variables of housing prices, the results confirm the desirability of the geographically weighted regression technique in terms of accuracy compared to the ordinary least squares regression technique in explaining housing prices. The results of this study indicate that the housing prices in Tehran are affected by the access level to urban services and facilities.

Originality/value

Identifying factors affecting housing prices helps create sustainable housing in Tehran. Building sustainable housing represents spending less energy during the construction process together with the utilization phase, which ultimately provides housing at an acceptable price for all income deciles. In housing construction, the more you consider the sustainable housing principles, the more sustainable housing you provide and you take a step toward sustainable development. Therefore, sustainable housing is an important planning factor for local authorities and developers. As a result, it is necessary to institutionalize an integrated vision based on the concepts of sustainable development in the field of housing in the Tehran metropolis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to offer a comprehensive overview of challenges and risks of the Internet of Things (IoT) in supply chain management (SCM) and provide a structured framework for classifying and analyzing the relevant literature to deduce insights for research and practice.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review (SLR) of 102 peer-reviewed journal articles on the topic of IoT in SCM was conducted.

Findings

This review identifies, categorizes and describes the relevant literature regarding the dimensions time and specificity. The resulting framework contains a holistic overview including focus areas and relations of macro-environmental, network-related and organizational challenges and risks. Furthermore, this review represents a conceptual framework for future research, considering the multidisciplinary body of the subject and provides an analysis of the timeline of literature, journals and used methodologies.

Practical implications

This study offers valuable insights into IoT and its impact on applications, processes and the structure of organizations and supply chains (SCs). The identification of challenges and risks helps to prepare for changes in the future because of the disruptive nature of this technology.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper lies in the synthesis of the fragmented body of literature of IoT challenges and risks for SCM. The derived framework and identification of relations and research gaps provide the foundation for further research to evaluate the relations between challenges and risks and offer solutions.
