Abstract

With this issue of RSR we present the first of our annual subject surveys of new reference publications. Each survey is by a librarian who is actively involved in the selection and interpretation of reference materials in his subject field and thus is conversant with recent trends in publishing, pertinent bibliographic data bases, and emerging networks. Each is especially qualified to analyze these trends and to judge which reference books of the year past are outstanding. Mr. Balachandran, a reference librarian in the Commerce Library, University of Illinois, is primarily responsible for selecting reference materials and other monographic publications. He holds a master's degree in economics and a Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois. Jimmie Hoover, in addition to being Document Librarian at Louisiana State University since 1967, has edited recent editions of Bookman's Guide to Americana. In his survey of Documents reference he was assisted by Nancy demons, a colleague at LSU in the Documents Department, formerly Documents Librarian at Samford University Library in Birmingham, Alabama. Our specialist in children's reference, Alice Smith, has been until recently chair‐person of the Department of Library Science/Audio‐Visual Education at the University of South Florida. She is now devoting full time to teaching and writing. Dr. Smith has taught a wide range of courses in selection and reading guidance in the area of juvenile literature, including the History of Children's Literature, Building Library Collections, and Bibliotherapy. Jack Weigel has a B.S. in mathematics, a master's in physics and held successively the positions of Mathematics Librarian and Physics Librarian at Columbia University. He is now head of the Physics/Astronomy Library at the University of Michigan.

Abstract

A thread that puckers the entire warp and woof of library service is the problem of binding library materials. Binding procedures “are the steps taken to insure the preservation of written, printed, or near‐printed material through a process of attaching permanent covers to the gathered pages.” Unbound United States federal documents throughout the history of the federal publishing function often have provided librarians with more binding problems than any other segment of the publishing industry. As perhaps the largest publisher in the world, the United States government has produced paperback titles by the millions as serials, numbered series, pamphlets and monographs. Changing patterns of publication from so‐called traditional government documents to a preponderance of research and development reports and the emergence of new patterns of usage including computer services and microforms have not reduced the number of paperbacks nor the accompanying difficulties of servicing and preserving them.

Abstract

Future shock for documents librarians can be pure bliss. Now that the Federal and private data banks and computers have recovered from their initial indigestion we begin to see improved second generation government publications tools well suited to information retrieval plus microform/hard copy collections conveniently available. Custodians of extensive retrospective collections of Federal documents have only to identify and acquire modern indexes and the whole world of government information, minus a few desert isles, is at their finger tips. Collection builders face happy but expensive options that range from multimedia encompassing all bodies of information to single fiche at a time services.

Abstract

For documents specialists it was a schizophrenic year. On the one hand we waded through a Bicentennial flood of historical publications extoling the significance of the past two hundred years of federal existence. On the other we faced future shock as the Monthly Catalog was wedded to OCLC while the GPO moved further into micropublishing.

Abstract

The materials included in this column were selected on the basis of an item by item review of all government publications received at a major depository library. Emphasis is placed on tools of a reference format, although much else that the Federal government publishes is otherwise of high referral value. Publications not in a reference format, in the strictest sense, are included when their potential value dictates; brief entries for “how to” items and informative pamphlets are also given if deemed potentially useful, particularly for school and public libraries and wherever the identification of vertical file materials is the responsibility of the public service librarian. Documents librarian's shorthand has been used in the bibliographical citations. Wherever possible, “United States” has been understood rather than stated in the corporate entries; also, the GPO imprint and place have been dropped. All items unless otherwise indicated are available from the Superintendent of Documents at the prices given. Prices which do not appear were not available at the date of review.

Abstract

These days, with everyone on the government publications bandwagon, it is hard for the documents specialist to single out specific problems to worry about. Workshops are cropping up like new corn from coast to coast; articles and books about government documents redundantly abound; a disciplined and ruthless army of microform and documents reprint salesmen regale us with gusto and champagne while the GPO issues directives, notices, guidelines and newsletters and sets new records for distributing federal information. The state of the art is a busy canvas indeed. So I wish to single out two subjects from the welter of topics which may be ripe for consideration: our failure to properly recognize the contribution that genealogists have made to our reference services and our unforgivable and unrequited lust for “archival” microforms.
