Abstract

A leadership development initiative cannot be successful unless it clearly targets a specific business goal. When all is said and done, if the initiative does not positively impact the business, there is really no reason to do it. For this reason, I strongly encourage clients to be very clear about what they are trying to accomplish before implementing any single leadership development program. The starting point should be a business analysis as all leadership development efforts should be grounded in business needs.

Abstract

Have you ever wanted to print out a copy of the current screen from within a BASIC program? Being able to do so might be preferable to coding a long, special‐purpose series of LPRINT statements. After all, the screen is (presumably) already formatted—and the user is familiar with the format from using the program! It's a great idea, with one catch—there is no “Print Screen” command in BASIC. Well, here's a nifty 4‐line subroutine you can include in your BASIC program to allow you to print out a screen any time you want.

Abstract

Universal Public Purchasing Certification Council (UPPCC) is an independent nonprofit entity formed to govern and administer the Certified Public Purchasing Officers (CPPO) and Certified Professional Public Buyers (CPPB) certification programs. Periodically, UPPCC performs a job analysis study to ensure that the certification exams are aligned with the skills, knowledge, and abilities needed for successful job performance in public procurement. This article provides a brief summary of the 2007 job analysis study.

Abstract

It was elementary school field trip day at the National Zoo, and the lines at the animal exhibits were long and hot. Escaping to the deserted orangutan learning laboratory, called the ThinkTank, I was intrigued to find an exhibit titled, “Can Animals Think?” The scientists, I learned, used only three criteria to determine the existence of thinking in this simian world: (1) the evidence of ability to create and hold in mind an image, a mental representation of something not present; (2) the evidence of intention, having a goal or purpose and a plan to achieve that purpose in a certain way; and (3) the evidence of flexibility, the ability to discover multiple ways to reach a goal when the initial plan failed to work. Image, intention, flexibility. How many of the managers and MBAs I work with, I wondered, could pass the Orangutan's Test?
