Abstract

Purpose

To enhance the load capacity and dynamic characteristics of gas foil conical bearings (GFCBs), two kinds of microgrooves (sector and Fibonacci-like shape) are arranged on the top foil surface.

Design/methodology/approach

The Reynolds equation considering gas rarefaction effect is solved by the finite difference method, in which the 2D plate element stiffness model is used for the grooved top foil. The influence of groove on the static characteristics is studied, and the dynamic characteristics of novel bearing are obtained by the perturbation method.

Findings

The results show that the gas rarefaction effect on the load capacities is negligible, and the novel GFCB with microgrooved top foil has higher load capacities. Moreover, the deeper groove is conductive to the dynamic stability improvement. The positive Fibonacci-like groove seems to be the most suitable shape, which can largely increase the axial load capacity with little additional torque cost. And the improvement of dynamic characteristics for the Fibonacci-like grooved GFCB is also more favorable.

Originality/value

As the low cost of groove processing, it is an effective way to improve GFCB’s performance and even can be used to upgrade the bearings in service.

Abstract

Purpose

Flow force is one of the crucial factors affecting the performance of conical throttle valves. The purpose of this paper is to determine the relationship between the flow force and operating parameters of the conical throttle valve.

Design/methodology/approach

The flow force of the throttle valve can be obtained by the difference between the axial force and static pressure on the valve spool. In this paper, the internal fluid is divided into two regions and the axial force and static pressure are obtained, respectively. In addition, a two-dimensional axisymmetric simulation model and experimental test are carried out to validate the results of the flow force.

Findings

It can be seen that the theoretical, simulation and experimental results exhibit high agreement with each other and the error between them decreases with the increase in the size of the opening. The curves of pressure distribution reveal that the pressure on the spool first decreases then increases when it reaches the minimum pressure at the orifice. Additionally, the minimum pressure decreases with the increase of opening and pressure difference. The results also indicate that the increase in the size of the opening and inlet pressure has a positive effect on the flow force. However, the increase in outlet pressure has a negative effect on the flow force.

Originality/value

In this paper, the flow force calculation model of conical throttle valve is established and the influence of operating parameters on the flow force of conical throttle valve is studied.

Abstract

Exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart can be designed to quickly detect small shifts in the mean of a sequence of independent normal observations. But this chart cannot perform well for skewed distribution. The main goal of this article is to suggest an EWMA control chart method that can be used to monitoring small shifts in a skewed distribution. Weighted variance method is introduced to construct a kind of EWMA chart for skewed distribution and the optimization design of this chart is given by using average run length as a performance assessment criteria. Pair of asymmetry control limits could be evaluated by sample dates in skewed distribution. The advantage of this method in detecting little drift for skewed distribution was illustrated by comparing with others control charts.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the ability of the computer vision system (CVS) to evaluate the colour of poultry meat. The advantages of the CVS over traditional methods were also explored.

Design/methodology/approach

The research was carried out on m. pectoralis major samples of three animals for each of the following four species: chicken, turkey, duck and goose. The total colour difference (ΔE) and the degree of difference of hue, chroma and lightness between the methods were calculated. In addition, a trained panel of 14 people was used to carry out three different similarity tests analysed using χ2 one sample test and one-way ANOVA. The correlation coefficient between CVS and colourimeter measures was evaluated using the Spearman rank correlation test.

Findings

The total colour difference (ΔE) between the methods employed was so large that the generated colour(s) could be considered more opposite than similar. The CVS-generated colour chips were more similar to the sample of the meat products visualised on the monitor compared to colourimeter-generated colour chips in all (100 per cent) individual trials performed. The use of the colourimeter for colour evaluation of lighter coloured poultry meat (chicken and turkey) was unrepresentative.

Practical implications

In this study, a CVS was developed to measure the colour of poultry meat as an alternative to conventional colourimeters.

Originality/value

The research has demonstrated that the use of a CVS should be considered a superior alternative to the traditional method for measuring colour of chicken, turkey, duck and goose meat.
