Abstract
Purpose
Growing concerns about the depletion of fossil fuels and global awareness about the environmental pollution motivate the automobile industries to search for an alternative transportation system such as hybrid vehicular systems, plug-in hybrid vehicular systems and electric vehicular systems. To have carbon emission-free environment, these electric vehicles use renewable sources, such as solar and fuel cell, as primary source of supply. As these renewable sources are intermittent in nature, an energy buffer such as battery or super capacitor is required for the smooth supply and regulation of load power. The current electric vehicle systems use multistage power electronic converters for energy transfer. Therefore, this paper aims to propose a modified multiport converter based on Luo topology.
Design/methodology/approach
The suggested converter is developed based on Luo topology using voltage lift technique.
Findings
Most of the research presents buck boost converter as power electronic interface in electric vehicle applications. Whereas the converter proposed in this paper is based on Luo topology. It exhibits the features of single stage conversion between the input output ports, with less ripple, high efficiency, fewer components and centralized control for effective power management.
Originality/value
The presented converter can work in all possible modes such as buck and boost modes independently or simultaneously during various operating conditions of electric vehicles. During buck/boost mode, the primary source PV (Photovoltaic) in the converter provides the required power for the vehicle and charges the secondary source, i.e. battery, whereas during boost mode the battery supplies the sufficient power to load.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this study was to develop a new generation of automatic systems based on cutting-edge design and practical welding physics to minimize downtime caused by defects and machine faults on the barges. Automatic welding has been used frequently on offshore pipeline projects.
Design/methodology/approach
An automated welding robot system for sub-sea pipeline installation was constructed. The system utilized the double-car double-torch welding, which is light-weight and compact, suited for offshore applications. Several state-of-the-art technologies were integrated into the control system design, including a heterogeneous network based on EtherCAT technology, network communications based on CANopen, motor synchronization, all-position welding, etc. In addition, the utilization of the CAN bus reduced the number of cable lines and increased the extensibility of the proposed welding robot system. An internal clamp with copper shoes assured a nice root weld and narrow bevel design and the welding efficiency was improved accordingly.
Findings
The trial was carried out to verify the rationality and effectiveness of the proposed automated system. The deposition rate of the backing welding could reach 17.78 kg/h; the average time for each welding was 340 s. This system was unique in that it features a dual-torch welding head that allowed for the deposition of one run with twice as much material as a single torch head. The experiment showed that the double-vehicle double-torch mode can greatly improve the welding efficiency of pipeline installation during the welding process.
Research limitations/implications
The automated welding robot system will be applied to offshore pipeline projects.
Originality/value
This robot is the first submarine pipeline installation welding robot to use a heterogeneous network based on EtherCAT technology. Various aspects of the submarine pipeline installation welding robot’s design and performance were discussed, including mechanical body design, control system design and welding process specification.

It is now widely accepted that the institutional interventions of states are a foundational influence on the dynamics of organizational forms. But why do states act? In this chapter, we apply the behavioral theory of the firm to develop an explanation of state actions based on the fact that they are boundedly rational rivals. The instrument of state competition we examine is the founding of business incubators, a primary tool in the entrepreneurial strategy of economic development. We predict that business incubators are more likely to be founded in a state when (1) the state falls behind comparable states in the indicators of economic development; (2) the state falls behind its own historical trajectories of economic development; (3) the state has slack resources in the form of budget surpluses; (4) comparable and rival states adopt incubators as a development strategy. Our analysis of incubator foundings in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania throughout 1980–2004 supports all of these propositions.

A multiplex relation occurs when actors share different roles, actions, or affiliations that overlap in a relationship, such as co-workers who are also friends outside of work. Although multiplex relations are as varied as they are pervasive and often problematic, we know surprisingly little about when, under what circumstances, and exactly how overlapping ties affect social relations. Do they strengthen or weaken relationships? When do relationships become multiplex? How do they affect networks at large? In this chapter, we review notable studies that exist on this topic and suggest key questions and issues for future research. Our goal in particular is to suggest how exchange theory could contribute to these efforts.

Abstract
Purpose
Environmentally-friendly certifications have increased over the past decade within food supply chains. Although a large body of literature has explored the drivers leading firms to adopt such certifications, it has not closely examined the strategic motivations associated with their adoption. This paper aims to investigate an environmentally-friendly certification, VIVA, examining its role as an alternative form of supply chain governance. The aim is to investigate the drivers affecting the adoption of VIVA and to assess managerial perceptions related to transaction-related characteristics and the firm’s internal resources and capabilities.
Design/methodology/approach
This study draws upon both an extended transaction cost economics perspective, which is based on transaction risks and the resource-based view, which examines a firm’s internal resources. A survey was conducted via a structured questionnaire sent to all of the wine producers in charge of the decision regarding whether to adopt VIVA certification. A Hierarchal Bayesian Model was applied to analyse questionnaire responses. Such a model allows us to specify the probabilistic relationship between questions and latent constructs and to carry over uncertainty across modelling levels.
Findings
The adoption of this environmentally-friendly certification is envisioned as a tool to curb internal risks, and thus to manage behavioural uncertainty within the supply chain. A high level of exposure to exogenous transaction risks discourages firms from adopting VIVA certification. The certification system is not perceived as a promoter of operational capabilities. Managers are more likely to implement the certification when they expect that its adoption will leverage their potential knowledge of the supply chain or prompt new and better collaborations with the suppliers. Therefore, the certification can become a resource that interacts with the capabilities of the firm, expressing complementarities that stimulate the formation of dynamic capabilities.
Research limitations/implications
The identification of drivers from the two theoretical perspectives offers insights into the attributes that are perceived as important by managers and which, therefore, could be leveraged to foster the adoption of the environmental certification. The external validity of the study could be improved by extending the sample to other certifications and supply chains.
Originality/value
The study offers a different perspective on environmental certification. It demonstrates that considering the certification as an alternative form of supply chain governance opens up a set of efficiency and strategic considerations that could be addressed to promote the effectiveness of an environmental strategy within a supply chain

Purpose
Clinical pathways (CPs) are multidisciplinary care plans with essential care steps for patients with specific clinical problems. CPs were introduced in China in 2009 to assure quality, reduce risks, increase resource efficiency and control costs. The purpose of this paper is to present a Chinese public hospital case study where a CP pilot was undertaken to evaluate two main outcomes: length of stay and hospitalization costs for a tertiary hospital from 2010 to 2012 using a mixed-methods approach.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were drawn from hospital records and in-depth interviews with hospital staff in a Shanxi Province tertiary hospital, northern China.
Findings
The authors found that the main objectives: to standardize treatment procedures by reducing length of stay and containing costs, were not fully achieved. Staff implementing CPs clearly encountered several barriers; i.e., managers did not see the pilot as a useful managerial instrument but were still driven by revenue generation. Physicians, too, lacked incentive to follow the guidelines due to income concerns.
Practical implications
The authors point to the daunting challenges brought about by perverse incentives embedded in the country’s health system. The authors argue that concerted efforts are needed to undertake difficult health policy reforms in China.
Originality/value
The authors present the first empirical study in the English-language literature that examines China’s ongoing CP pilots from a micro perspective. The authors combine qualitative and quantitative methods and reveal the hospital-level dynamics in its implementation.
